The amount of carbon taken in by growing plants increased from 1982 through 1999 as
temperatures rose and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased. But a new study
in Friday ’ s edition of the journal Science found a drought - related decline in such plant growth
from 2000 to 2009,even though temperatures continued to climb.
As drought caused by warming reduces the land ’ s ability to take in carbon, the result could
be more carbon dioxide left in the atmosphere, and thus more warming,Zhao Maosheng from the
University of Montana explained in a telephone interview.
“This is a pretty serious warning that warmer temperatures are not going to endlessly improve
plant growth ’” co - author Steven Running, also from the University of Montana ’ said in a
statement. “ We see this as a bit of a surprise, and potentially significant on a policy level because
previous interpretations suggested global warming might actually help plant growth around the
world, “ he said.
Instead, he and Zhao found a small but measurable decline of about 1%,compared to a 6%
increase in the past decade.
Their study, based on the data collected by NASA satellites, found that north areas continued
to increase plant growth, thanks to warmer temperatures and a longer growing season.
Someone commented, "This past decade’ s net decline in earthly productivity suggests that a
complex relationship between temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, and carbon dioxide, probably in
combination with other factors such as nutrients (营养)and land management, will determine
future patterns and trends in productivity.,,
1.From the first paragraph, we can learn in the recent decade or so.
A. the emission(排放)of carbon hasn’ t been reduced
B. draught has been causing loss of soil and water
C. carbon dioxide levels have been rising
D. the rise of temperature doesn' t promote the plant growth
2.Zhao Maosheng really worried that__ .
E. more and more land will be abandoned
F. the climate becomes warmer and warmer
G. the emission of carbon dioxide increases
H. draught further reduces the number of the plants
3.Steven Running made his statement to__ .
I. confirm Zhao' s views on the influence of temperature rise
J. urge the government to take necessary measures
K. warn the people to strengthen the plant protection
L. support Zhao* s views on lhe plant production
4. We can infer from the passage that______ .
A. global warming will determine the future productivity
B. various factors play a key role jointly on future productivity
C. earthly productivity actually increased in the past decade
D. temperature rise has had no effect on future producticity patterns

If we planted a lot more trees in just the right places, they could reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere to levels not seen since the 1920s, said study leader Jean Francois Bastin, an ecologist from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. After examining more than 70,000 high-quality satellite photos of trees from all over the planet, ecologists concluded that the earth could support 900 million additional hectares (公顷) of tree cover.
Bastin and his colleagues developed a computer program that estimates how much forested land could be restored both now and in a future warmer world. The team members combed through 78,774 satellite photos of a variety of ecosystems- everywhere from the thick Amazon rainforest to the dry Sahel in Africa-that had been protected from human influence. They counted every tree in every photo to assess the current tree coverage in natural environments. The researchers combined that information with data about the climate, temperature and soil conditions for each ecosystem. Then they taught their program to put it all together to determine how much tree coverage a particular area could support.
The result shows trees currently cover 2.8 billion hectares of land- but they have the potential to populate as much as 4.4 billion hectares. Right now, much of the additional 1.6 billion hectares is being used for agriculture or urban spaces. The researchers took those areas off the table and saw that the earth still has 900 million hectares ready and waiting to be restored with trees an area roughly the size of Brazil. When those trees mature, they could remove 205 gigatonnes (兆吨) of carbon from the atmosphere, the study calculated, That represents about two-thirds of the roughly 300 gigatonnes of atmospheric carbon that can be traced to human actions, they said.
Even if trees are planted in the most mindful way, other actions are still needed to fight climate change, Bastin said.
1.Why did Bastin develop a computer program?
A.To reduce air pollution in Africa.
B.To determine carbon dioxide in the air.
C.To assess the potential forested land.
D.To calculate the area of forest in the world.
2.What does the underlined phrase “combed through” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Looked into. B.Put away.
C.Brought back. D.Took in.
3.What can we infer from what Basin said in the last paragraph?
A.Brazil has large areas to plant trees.
B.The tree cover is not enough to control greenhouse gases.
C.Trees removed two-thirds of carbon in the atmosphere.
D.Other actions are equally important compared to planting trees.
4.What is the author’s attitude towards the research result?
A.Disapproving. B.Doubtful.
C.Supportive. D.Objective.

We all think plants were expected to get larger with increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but changes in temperature, humidity(湿度)and nutrient availability seem to have trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide” said researchers from the National University of Singapore.
45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. The researchers pointed out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for shrinking creatures.
“ We do not yet know the mechanisms(机制)involved, or why some organism are getting smaller while others are unaffected,” the researchers said. “Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can’t yet quantify. ’’
The change is big in cold-blooded animals. Only two decades of warmer temperatures are enough to make retiles (爬行动物)smaller. An increase of only 1 degree centigrade caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism(新陈代谢). Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. Fish are smaller now too. Though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growing.
Warm-blooded animals aren’t immune(免除)from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now smaller. Soay sheep are thinner. Red deer are weaken And polar bears are smaller, compared with historical records.
This is not the first time this has happened in Earth’s history. 55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink by 50 to 75 percent over several thousand years. That event happened over a longer time than the current climate change.
The speed of modem climate change could mean organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough, especially those with long generation times climate change will be shown in the future.
1.What does the text mainly talk about_______
A. Why some species become smaller.
B. How climate changes in Earth’s history?
C. Climate change has many negative effects.
D. Species are becoming smaller as climate gets warmer.
2.The underlined word “trumped” m the first paragraph probably mean_________.
A. strengthened B. gained
C. beaten D. equaled
3.Researchers from the National University of Singapore believe that________
A. they have found the exact causes for creatures getting smaller.
B. all the animals on the earth have become smaller.
C. climate change has more negative effects on warm-blooded animals.
D. increase in energy use can lead to creatures getting smaller.
4.What does the author feel about the climate change?
A. Disappointed B. Optimistic
C. Worried D. Shameful

In the Fake News Era, Building Trust with Consumers Is Crucial
With consumers growing increasingly frustrated with online advertising and privacy concerns, how to you convince shoppers to buy your narrative(叙述), let alone your product?
A recent report by Trust-Radius, a software review company that connects buyers and vendors(供应商), may be able to shed some light. Among other interesting findings, it turns out that it may actually benefit brands to be painfully _____ about their products.
Consumer awareness of influencer marketing tactics(策略)is increasing. _____ according to the report, most consumers trust online peer _____ as much as recommendations from friends -- and well above company advertising message. Feedback from everyday folks, it seems, actually carries more _____ than a brand ambassador (大使)from an out-of-reach personality.
Transparency(透明度)is crucial The report found that there is a large trust _____ between vendors and buyers. While vendors believe they are transparent, most buyers don’t appear to see it. During the sales process, for example, 85 percent of vendors -- _____ to be open about their product’s limitations during the sales process -- but only 36 percent of buyers share that same view. The reality is, consumers don’t expect any products to be _____ -- they just want to enter relationships with their eyes wide open so that they can _____ the options that are best for them. They also want brands to be more _____. 66 percent of consumers say they will leave a company if they feel they are being treated like a number and not an individual.
Along with the combination of take news, advertising fraud, and data leaks, there have been fake reviews as well. Review sites have been _____ giving preferential(优惠的)treatment to paid advertisers, and consumers are increasingly discerning(有辨别力的), as a result. _____, review sites are not our only source of peer reviews, with social media providing customer experiences on a second - to - second basis. When brands treat every _____ with a customer as a potential review, they’ll start paying more attention to detail, and being alert to delivering a valued and memorable experience every time. Taking feedback seriously also lets current customers feel valued and respected and makes your business seem more approachable. This helps secure _____, and often, these customers will become brand ambassadors to their friends, family and people they meet online.
The challenge for brands today is determining how to use the _____ of the consumer to their advantage. In an age of cutting - edge technology, artificial intelligence, and self-service customer care, it’s odd to acknowledge that the best way to build trust with your customers is by holding an open _____ with your customers. Being more human, transparent, and listening to what people are saying will see your company thrive in an era marked by consumer suspicion.

A new study has found the amount of antibiotics(抗生素)given to farm animals is expected to increase by two-thirds over the next 15 years.Researchers are linking the growing dependence on the drugs to the increasing need for meat, milk and eggs. However, the drugs could quicken the development of antibiotic-resistant infections(感染).Such infections are already a major public, health concern in the United States.
The World Health Organization notes when people stop living in poverty(贫困),the first thing they want to do is eat better, rather than earn more money. For most people, that means their diet should contain more meat. With the rapid development of Asia, people there are eating nearly four times as much meat, milk and other milk products as they did 50 year ago.
To meet the need, farmers have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, the easiest way to deal with some of the problems d crowding is to give them antibiotics. It's clear that antibiotics help animals stay healthy in a crowded environment and grow faster. But bacteria can develop resistance to the drugs gradually.
Nowadays, doctors find antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer work. The bacteria have learned ways to fight against the drugs. The heavy use of antibiotics in animals is responsible for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. In the United States,at least two million people get drug-resistant infections each year and at least 23,000 die from an infection.
Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.
1.What accounts for the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals?
A. The desire for new drugs. B. The less effective antibiotics.
C. The outdated farm technology. D. The need for more various foods.
2.What do most people want to do first when they get rid of poverty according to the WHO?
A. Making a lot of money. B. Focusing more on health.
C. Having more meat in their diet. D. Living in a better environment.
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Antibiotics do harm to animals.
B. Antibiotics help animals stay healthy.
C. Antibiotics are used heavily in Europe.
D. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria spread to people.
4.What's the passage mainly about?
A. A new way of raising farm animals.
B. The advantages of using antibiotics.
C. The reason for banning the use of antibiotics.
D. The negative effect of antibiotics in farm animals.

Sports account for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract viewers from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.
An attraction of sport programs for the major U. S. media companies is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons—the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming.
Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract made viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.
Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率)are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computer, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computer, with such viewers, these programs don’t need high ratings to stay on the air.
1.Television sport programs on weekend afternoons.
A.result in more sport event |
B.get more viewers to play sports |
C.make more people interested in television |
D.bring more money to the television networks |
2.Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs?
A.Because there would be few viewers |
B.Because the advertisers would be off work |
C.Because television programs would go slowly |
D.Because viewers would pay less for watching television |
3.In many families, men make decision on .
A.holiday | B.sports viewing | C.television shopping | D.expensive purchases |
4.The ratings are not important for golf and tennis programs because.
A.their advertisers are carmakers |
B.their viewers are attracted by sports |
C.their advertisers target at rich people |
D.their viewers can afford expensive cars |
5.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Television viewers are determined by male viewers |
B.Rich viewers contribute most to television companies |
C.Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television |
D.Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport event |
