Many Chinese people are confused with the two nations: one is known for its cheese and watches; the other for IKEA and Volvo.
The problem largely stems from the fact that both nation’s names are written similarly in Mandarin---Ruidian(Sweden) and Ruishi (Switzerland)------which begin with the same symbol, according to the Swedish Consul General Victoria Liu in China.
In an effort to put an end to the mix-up, the Swedish and Swiss governments have launched a competition on a website, asking Chinese people to come up with funny ways to help differentiate the two countries. Submissions can be accepted as a blog post, cartoon, photo, short film or in any other format.
The winner with the best submission will receive a 12-day trip to Sweden and Switzerland and will be expected to report back on his/her impressions of both countries following the trip, the website states. Entries will be accepted until November 20.
The organizers have also devised a humorous campaign logo with objects and people associated with Sweden and Switzerland on separate maps of each country. Sweden’s map features meatballs, a Viking, as well as two male cartoon figures with a heart between them symbolizing gay marriage, which remains illegal in Switzerland. Switzerland’s map features cheese, the Alps and a picture of Roger Federer.
China may not be the only country struggling to tell Sweden and Switzerland apart. Residents of Spanish-speaking countries also fall victim to the confusion as Sweden is spelt “Suecia” in Spanish while Switzerland is called “Suiza”.
Sweden and Switzerland aren’t the only places that have caused confusion among people. Last month, , a British holidaymaker hoped to explore the architecture of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, but instead mistakenly caught a flight across the Atlantic to the tropical Caribbean island of Grenada following a confusing booking blunder. Earlier this summer, two US holidaymakers were flown to the wrong continent after an airline confused two airport codes.
1.What can we learn about the competition launched by the two governments?
A. The winner of the competition will receive a 24-day trip altogether to both of the countries.
B. The winner will report his/her impressions on the two countries in his/her submission.
C. The competition is held among all people around the world.
D. The competition is held in order to stop people’s confusion about the two countries.
2.Why does the author mention the British holidaymaker?
A. To show us many people are confused by Sweden and Switzerland.
B. To prove airports make mistakes about people’s places too.
C. To explain Spanish-speaking people make mistakes too.
D. To prove many people are confused about some places.

Life is difficult.
What do you think about life? Maybe most people say that life is difficult. But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it. Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead, they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon (强加于) them or their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning.
Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt instruct.” It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
1.The writer probably used just one short sentence in the first paragraph to _________.
A. show his opinion B. argue with readers
C. give an example D. get readers’ attention
2.According to the passage we give school children difficult problems in order to _______.
A. help them learn to deal with pain
B. teach them how to respect problems
C. encourage them to solve problems
D. teach them to fear the pain of solving problems
3.The saying from Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt instruct.” suggests that _________.
A. pain teaches us important lessons B. we do not learn when we are in pain
C. we do not learn from experience D. the pain of problems is not welcome
4.The passage mainly tells us that _________.
A. everybody has problems
B. we become stronger by facing and solving the problems of life
C. people like to complain about their problems
D. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain

You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.
First, you must ask yourself, “Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.
Let’s start with the wind blowing from the behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90° angle to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.
If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45°angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap(摆动). It shouldn’t look like on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.
Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can’t go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you’re tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.
1.What should you consider first while sailing?
A. Sailors’ strength.
B. Wind directions.
C. Size of sail.
D. Wave levels.
2.What does the word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The sail. B. The wind. C. The boat. D. The angle.
3.What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?
A. Move in a straight line.
B. Allow the sail to flap.
C. Tack the boat.
D. Lower the sail.
4.Where can you probably find the text?
A. In a tourist guidebook.
B. In a physics textbook.
C. In an official report.
D. In a popular magazine.

Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Professor Strickland is one of the recipients( 受领者) of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 with Gérard Mourou, her PhD supervisor at the time. They published this Nobel-winning research in 1985 when Strickland was a PhD student at the University of Rochester in New York state. Together they paved the way toward the most intense laser pulses ever created.
Professor Donna Strickland is only the third woman ever to have won a Nobel Prize in physics. She and her fellow winners were honored for what the Nobel Committee called ground-breaking inventions in laser physics. Professor Strickland devised a way to use lasers as very precise drilling or cutting tools. Millions of eye operations are performed every year with these sharpest of laser beams.
---“How surprising do you think it is that you’re the third woman to win this prize? ”
---“Well, that is surprising, isn’t it? I think that’s the story of Maria that people want to talk about --- that why should it take 60 years? There are so many women out there doing fantastic research, so why does it take so long to get recognized? ”
Physics still has one of the largest gender gaps in science. One recent study concluded that at the current rates it would be more than two centuries until there were equal numbers of senior male and female researchers in the field.
The last woman to win a physics Nobel was German-born Maria Goeppert-Mayer for her discoveries about the nuclei of atoms. Before that it was Marie Curie, who shared the 1903 prize with her husband, Pierre. This year’s winners hope that breaking this half century hiatus will mean the focus in future will be on the research, rather than the gender of the researcher.
1.Which of the following best explains “ground-breaking” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A. active B. talented
C. creative D. awesome
2.What do we know about Professor Strickland’s achievement?
A. She created the most intense laser pulses by herself.
B. She advocated equality between man and women.
C. She discovered the nuclei of atoms with her husband.
D. She invented a way of using lasers as accurate cutting tools .
3.When was the second Nobel Prize in physics awarded to woman?
A. in 1963 B. in 1985
C. in 1903 D. in 1958
4.What can be inferred from the statements in paragraph 4 ?
A. Woman’s achievements in physics are as great as man’s.
B. Woman’s achievements in physics are more and more fantastic.
C. Maria’s discoveries resulted from her long time research.
D. Gender discrimination still exists in the field of science research.
