My grandfather died more than twenty-five years ago. I was fifteen. He was kind, strong, fair, and very funny. When I was a young musician, he was my biggest fan. I played my violin for him when he visited, and he loved everything, but each time he had one request. “Could you play ‘Amazing Grace’?” he asked, full of hope and with a twinkle in his eye, because he knew my answer was always, “I don’t know that one!” We went through this routine at every major holiday, and I always figured I’d have time to learn it for him later.
About the time I entered high school and started guitar, Grandpa got cancer. The last time I saw him alive was Thanksgiving weekend in 1985. My mom warned us that Grandpa didn’t look the same anymore and that we should prepare ourselves. For a moment I didn’t recognize him. He looked so small among all the white sheets. We had all gathered in Ohio for the holiday, and I’m sure we all knew we were there to say good-bye. I can see now that Grandpa held on long enough to see us each one more time. I remember how we ate in the dining room and laughed and talked while Grandpa rested in his hospital bed. I wonder if it was sad for him to be alone with our voices and laughter. Knowing Grandpa, he was probably content.
The next morning I found my moment alone with him. I pulled out my guitar, tuned to his appreciative gaze, and finally played for him “Amazing Grace.” I had worked on it for weeks, knowing it never mattered whether I actually played it well and choosing not to believe as I played that it was my last concert for my biggest fan. The cancer had stolen his smile, but I saw joy in his eyes. He held my hand afterward, and I knew I had done something important.
I argued with people all through college about my music major. I was told by strangers that music wouldn’t make me any money and it wasn’t useful like being a doctor. But I know firsthand that with music I was able to give my grandpa something at a point when no one else could.

I will never forget what my old headmaster told me.Normally when you are only 15years of age you do not remember most of the things that are preached by your teachers. But, this particular story is one such lesson that I will never forget.Every time I drift off course, I get reminded of this story.
It was a normal Monday morning at an assembly, and he was addressing the students on important things in life and about committing ourselves to what is important to us.This is how the story went:
An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg.He would do this every single day of his life.He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years.
His house was filthy, and a stench (恶臭) came out of the house and it smelled horribly. The neighbours could not stand the smell anymore, so they summoned the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.
The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire. They waited outside his house in anticipation to share the good news with him. When he arrived home that evening, he was met by one of the officers who told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire.
He said nothing at all: he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, got into the train, and sat at the street corner and continued to beg.
Obviously, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant for his life.We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing, commitment(专心,敬业).We should remain true to our course, although it may mean committing ourselves to things that people around us would normally disapprove.Just keep it in mind that commitment attracts wealth.
1.Why did the headmaster tell us the story?
A.To enjoy ourselves.
B.To teach us how to make money.
C.To tell us the importance of commitment.
D.To tell us not to look down upon beggars.
2.According to the passage which of the following is true?
A.The old man made a living by begging.
B.The old man was excited to be a millionaire.
C.The old man became a millionaire by begging every weekday.
D.The old man planned to became a millionaire.
3.Why did the police officer clean the old man’s house?
A.Because the old man hired them to do so.
B.Because they wanted to know how much money the old man had begged.
C.Because the old man wanted to live comfortably.
D.Because the neighbours could not bear the smell coming out of the oldman’s house.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Where there is a will, there is a way.
B.Keep the general goal in sight while tackling daily tasks.
C.Commitment attracts wealth.
D.Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.

Last semester in my final year of high school, I had a kind teacher whom I can never forget. I was not the best student when it came to writing tests. I had to work extra hard to get good marks, although I enjoyed learning. Anyway, this class that I truly enjoyed still had me struggling to do well on my tests. My teacher willingly helped me and was always willing to answer my questions, and I greatly appreciated it. He was a remarkable teacher, always reaching out to students and helping them achieve their greatest potential.
I remember the day of writing my final exam, I was the last one still writing in the exam room as always, reviewing my exam paper, while everyone else had already finished and left the room. After turning in my exam-paper, I started to leave the classroom, but decided to turn around and say what I had meant to say.
What I did right then was that I sincerely thanked my teacher for everything. What I said to him lastly meant a lot more to him than I thought it would —“I really enjoyed this class.” I did not think much about it. I was just being honest with him, but the look on his face was remarkable. He seemed really touched and appreciated my simple comment, just knowing that one of his students had truly enjoyed his class. That is what I call a simple, yet very meaningful act of kindness to brighten a teacher’s day, because they work so hard for us and truly inspire us to learn.
It is what we say and do to show concern to others that can make somebody else’s day extra special. I believe that a simple praise can mean a lot more than one can think.
1.What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.The author was good at learning.
B.The author didn’t do well in writing.
C.The classes had me struggling.
D.The teacher answered all my questions.
2.Why is the author thankful to his teacher?
A.He taught him how to learn.
B.He let him pass the tests.
C.He helped arouse his potential.
D.He listened to him patiently.
3.Which words can describe the teacher?
A.Honest and kind. B.Kind and outstanding.
C.Special and patient. D.Skillful and clever.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

B.We should be honest with others.
C.We should appreciate others’ help.

TWENTY-FIVE years ago director Stephen Spielberg captured the hearts of Western audiences with his family classic.E.T.Now his Hong Kong director Stephen Chow is trying to do the same trick in China.
Chow's latest movie CJ7(《长江七号》),in cinemas now,is a heart-warming story about a poor migrant worker(外来务工者) and his son. When a strange alien enters their lives, father and son learn a lesson about the value of family.Chow hopes his movie will help to make family films more popular in China.
Family films have been the main part of the Hollywood market for the last 40 years. They have given audiences movies like E.T., Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. However, there are few of these movies in China, where expensive history films are more popular.
A family film is not simply a children's movie. It is a film that is not only suitable for children, but appeals to the whole family.
According to Raymound Zhou,a famous film critic, these films are rare in China because“very few families go to the cinema together”.Because of this, there is little demand for movies that appeal to the whole family.
However, in the West,it is common for the family to sit down and watch a movie together.Tim Bridges, from London, says:“I love it at Christmas when I sit down and watch a movie with my family.”
All family films contain similar messages about being honest、remaining positive and learning there is more to life than money.According to the American movie reviewer,Dave Johnson, this is because “When parents watch a movie, they want their children to be learning good values”.
Just like when the alien in Spielberg's E.T.phones home to make contact with his family, Chow will hope Chinese audiences are tuned in and ready to receive his family movie message.

A.A kind of film that is about history.
B.A kind of film in which the characters are animals.

65.What is implied but not stated directly in the passage?
A.Families in China should go to the cinema at Christmas.
B.It's good for children to watch family films.
C.Chinese families don't like family films.
D.The movie CJ7 has nothing in common with E.T.
