Air travel can be annoying. But research now suggests global warming could make it much worse. To get off the ground in really hot weather, planes may be forced to carry fewer passengers. That might mean a little more space, which would be good. However, it also would make the passengers pay more.
Average air temperatures around the world are rising because people are polluting the air with increasing amounts of greenhouse gases, which, such as carbon dioxide, are a byproduct of burning fuels. Those warmer temperatures can influence an airplane’s ability to fly because air molecules (分子) spread out more as the air warms. This produces less lift under a plane’s wings, so a plane must be lighter to take off in hot weather than on cooler days.
It can even prove too dangerous for some planes to attempt a take-off. A record of June heat wave in the American Southwest, for instance, caused flight cancellations in Phoenix, Ariz. One airline ‘s planes were cleared to operate only up to 47.8℃. On June 20, Phoenix reached 48.3℃!
Radley Horton is a climate scientist at Columbia University. Two years ago, he and his graduate student Ethan David Coffel studied the effect of warming at four US airports and found that warming of track could triple (使成三倍) the number of days when planes face weight restrictions. Later, they explored the effect of rising temperatures on five types of commercial planes flying out of 19 of the world’s busiest airports. In the coming decades, as many as one to three out of every 10 flights that take off during the hottest time of day could face weight restrictions, they found. In some cases, a typical 160-seat plane would have to remove 4%of its weight. That would be equal to taking a dozen people off the plane, the researchers calculated.
1.How would global warming affect air travel according to the first paragraph?
A.It’ll add to the danger of flying.
B.It’ll increase passengers’ travel cost.
C.It’ll make flying much more comfortable.
D.It’ll encourage more people to travel by plane.
2.What is the second paragraph actually intended to explain?
A.How global warming is happening. B.What decides a plane’s ability to fly.
C.Why global warming affects flying. D.Where greenhouse gases are created.
3.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Reasons for flight cancellation. B.Financial condition related to hot air.
C.The tendency of temperature change. D.Findings of effects of warming on flying.
4.What should be the best title for the text?
A.Air Travel isn’t Recommended during Hot Weather
B.Rising Temperatures May Reduce the Number of Flights
C.Weight Restrictions Are More Common in More Airports
D.Hotter Air May Lead to Planes Carrying Fewer Passengers

Simply apply the tips below and see which ones suit you best:

Animals can be reproduced by technology now; researchers can clone them. A clone is an exact copy of another animal or plant. Scientists have cloned a sheep which they have named Dolly. Researchers took genes from a ewe (母羊) and used them to create a copy (Dolly) of the ewe.
Why are scientists doing this research? One reason is to get information about genes so they can improve our health. They also want to learn how better farm animals can be produced. Cloning is a controversial issue for people. Some people think it is good because this research can help us, but other people think cloning is unacceptable. Some people think it might be possible to save endangered animals by cloning them. Tigers, elephants, and other endangered animals might be saved in this way.
In China, pandas are endangered because they are hunted and they are losing their habitat, so some Chinese scientists want to try to clone pandas to save them from extinction.
I don’t really like the idea of cloning animals, but I don’t think I want panda to become extinct. If the best way to save them is to make cloned pandas, they must be cloned.
I want to live with a lot of animals and nature. I don’t want animals to die out, especially pandas. I think humans must think more about protecting animals and nature. Maybe cloning is the way to save all endangered animals.

It may not be news to parents of teenage girls, but researchers have confirmed that no one can stop their 16-year-old daughter from deciding how the family spends its money.
The willpower and determination of teenage girls give them a big say in how a family’s money is spent on everything from food and meals to mobile phones, and, of course, clothes. Teenage boys did not show up at all in the analysis, which was designed to find out the influence of young people on household spending.
The findings on the spending power of teenage girls were calculated from Office for National Statistics records of family spending during the 1980s and 1990s. Researchers examined how much money went on services and leisure goods in different kinds of homes. They checked spending on food, restaurant meals, alcohol, tobacco, services, heating, transport, clothes and sports in 2,745 British families.
They found that teenage girls in the UK typically played an active role in family decisions about the allocation(分配)of household resources. But older children— those over the age of 21 who are still living with their parents—appear to have no say in household decisions.
They also tried to calculate to what extent the bargaining power of a teenager affected family budgets. “Every parent knows that children, even at a very early age, have their own preferences with regard to consumption, researchers said. “But children are only interested in a limited range of goods—mainly sweets and toys—and parents are able to use punishment to reduce their children’s bargaining power or remove it.” When they become teenagers, however, girls are much more independent and they are capable of earning their own money, which improves their bargaining power in family decisions.
The researchers could not explain why girls have more influence over spending while the evidence for boys is much less conclusive. However, this study could be of great significance to market research and how marketers target children.

He is a Time Lord who can travel anywhere he wants in time, but still never seems to be happy. He is always very well dressed. He refuses to use guns to kill anybody, preferring to trust his brains. Who could be a better hero for British people? He is the Doctor, hero of the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of its 2005 reboot on March 26.
In 2005 the sci-fi TV series returned to British screens after originally running from 1963 until 1989. In the series, the Doctor travels through time in his TARDIS police box, saving Earth and other planets from dangerous aliens and humans.
The show looked a little different upon its 2005 return — the show used to be famous for cheap, ugly special effects but they were gone, replaced by expensive computer effects and attractive young stars. Christopher Eccleston played the Ninth Doctor in 2005, and there have been four more since, including the current Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi.
You may wonder why the Doctor has been played by so many people, thirteen in total. This is because every few years, the doctor “regenerates”,which means his character "dies” but comes back to life with a completely new body afterwards. As the Radio Times put it:“Who else can cheat death by getting a whole new face?”
The show has no limits. The Doctor has already visited the time of Shakespeare, found out the truth about the American moon landing of 1969’ and gone back to the very early days of Earth. He has also traveled forward in time and been to many strange planets. Who knows where he’ll go in the next 10 years? Or if the Doctor will even be a man? Last year, head writer Steven Moffat told BANG Showbiz ii is very possible that a woman will play the Doctor in the future
Are you ready for more travels with him or her through time?
