Britons may like to complain a lot, but they rarely do so right now, explains BBC writer Ruth Margolis. They would rather grumble (发牢骚) afterward. This is because Britons hate to put someone out and cause any embarrassment. Margolis writes, “For instance, I’m much more comfortable just leaving that piece of raw chicken on my plate instead of complaining to restaurant staff. But beware: if this kind of thing happens when you’re dining with an American, they will most likely speak up on your behalf and not understand why you find this ashamed.”
In a BBC blog post comparing cultural differences between the UK and the US, Margolis mentions a few other things that Americans like to do that are offensive to Britons.
● Not making introductions
Margolis says most Britons dislike this approach because “talking to strangers without being introduced gives them a stomachache”. Americans rarely introduce a new friend to their friends at parties. Strangers are supposed to introduce themselves.
● “Quite” good
Using “quite” to mean “very” happens a lot in the US. But if you are invited to a dinner party in Britain, don't describe the meal as “quite good” if you want to express high praise. To Britons’ ears, “quite” detracts from the “good”: the meal was OK but could have been better.
● Money Talk
Americans can talk about money subjects for hours without feeling uncomfortable. For Britons, says Margolis, “Talking about how much we make is unthinkable — even 1ess so than discussing our feelings.”
● Over-politeness
“It’s not that I want shop assistants to be actively rude. But neither do I want to expend energy responding to someone who's been paid to ask: ‘How are you today?’” says Margolis. In the US, it is not unusual to be greeted by a perfect stranger as “honey” or “sweetie”. But Margolis says Britons find put-on friendliness, especially in stores, deeply irritating.
1.Margolis’ dining experience in Paragraph 1 shows that_______.
A. Britons are particular about foods
B. Britons are not good at complaining
C. Americans usually complain directly
D. Americans complain more than Britons
2.Which of the following might Margolis agree with?
A. Britons enjoy talking about their feelings.
B. Americans introduce themselves at parties.
C. Americans dislike talking to strangers at parties.
D. Britons feel happy if treated like close friends.
3.The underlined phrase “detracts from” in the text probably means ____.
A. differs greatly from
B. increases the quality of
C. reduces the strength of
D. draws attention away from
4.What does the text mainly talk about?
A. How to get on well with westerners.
B. How to start conversations with Britons.
C. Ruth Margolis’ tips on public behavior.
D. Some American habits that annoy Britons.

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, the moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech—“I Have a dream”, you may notice that he stumbles(结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.
People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speechmaking as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
1.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ______.
A.be smarter than you B.notice your mistakes
C.do better than you D.know what you are talking about
2.You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because________.
A.your attention is on the content
B.you don’t fully understand the speech
C.you don’t know what the speaker plans to say
D.you find the way of speech-making more important
3.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.giving a speech is like giving a performance
B.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
C.the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D.the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Be a Perfect Speaker
B.How to Make a Perfect Speech
C.Don’ t Expect a Perfect Speech
D.Don’t Expect Mistakes in a Speech

“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me.I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day.Next!” The version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words came out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure.They_are_spoken_at_me,_not_to_me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else's is the management's attempt to increase business.
The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other.Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end.Sometimes the expression saves us when we don't know what to say.“Oh, you just had a tooth out? I'm terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”
The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heartwarming because someone you don't know has tried to be nice to you.
Although the use of the expression is insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day.But in a strange and comfortable way, it's nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don't care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.
1.How does the author understand Maxie's words?
A.Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.
B.Maxie really wishes the author a good day.
C.Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.
D.Maxie really worries about the author's security.
2.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The salesgirl is rude.
B.The salesgirl is bored.
C.The salesgirl cares about me.
D.The salesgirl says the words as a routine.
3.By saying “Have a nice day”, a stranger may _______.
A.try to be polite to you
B.express respect to you
C.give his blessing to you
D.share his pleasure with you
4.According to the last paragraph, people say“Have a nice day” _________.
A.sincerely B.as thanks
C.as a habit D.encouragingly
5.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Have a Nice Day—a Social Custom
B.Have a Nice Day—a Pleasant Gesture
C.Have a Nice Day—a Heartwarming Greeting
D.Have a Nice Day—a Polite Ending of a Conversation

A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work. He may have the idea that he is not capable of it. A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties (机能), or he may accept another person's mistaken estimate (评价) of his ability. Older people may be handicapped (阻碍) by the mistaken belief that they are incapable of learning anything new because of their age.
A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won’t go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence. Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, “Isn’t it too bad that Alfred can’t do arithmetic?” He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected.
One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn’t do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His newfound confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinary good at arithmetic.
This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one’s ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.
41. Why might a person be prevented from doing good work? _______.
A. Because he thinks he is old enough to make the most of his mental facilities
B. Because he accepts another person’s mistaken estimate of his ability
C. Because he has the idea that he is incapable of doing everything
D. Because he believes in what other people think of him
42. A person who believes in his low ability will________.
A. spare no efforts to do things
B. fail to go at a job but never lose heart
C. change to learn other course instead of mathematics
D. show complete lack of confidence
43. As a boy, Alfred Adler was poor at arithmetic because ________.
A. he lost his self-confidence
B. he was weak in thinking
C. his parents expected too much of him
D. his teacher had no confidence in herself
44. Which of the following is the most important factor to Alder's success? ______
A. Spirit and experience B. Interest and self-respect

We may look at the world around us, but somehow we manage not to see it until whatever we've become used to suddenly disappears. 36 , for example, the neatly-dressed woman I 37 to see -- or look at -- on my way to work each morning.
For three years, no matter 38 the weather was like, she was always waiting at the bus stop around 8:00 am. On 39 days, she wore heavy clothes and a pair of woolen gloves.
