For a small town, Mantattan, Kansas has some big surprises. And one of them is the Holiday Inn Hotel, with rooms built around a swimming pool and a friendly atmosphere.
The Holiday Inn is where Manhattan people often go for a special party, or a night out. A lot of them choose to eat in the bright‑lit restaurant near the pool, And many of them will be served by Ellen Logan, who has worked as a waitress here for more than two years.
Ellen, like most of the waitresses, is also a student. She comes from Nebraska, but she’s planning one day to be a veterinary surgeon, and to care for small animals. But in order to support herself at college, she works twenty hours a week at the Holiday Inn.
Ellen soon learned what every waitress finds out. Your best friend has a good pair of shoes. She paid forty‑five dollars for hers, much more than she would usually spend. She’s discovered something else too. You don’t have to know much about food to be a good waitress, but you do have to know a lot about people.
“A lot of business people always stay here when they come to Manhattan”, she explains. “They like you to recognize them and remember their favorite dishes. But some couples come for a night out together. They just want to be left alone. Then there are people who can’t make up their minds. They look down the menu and say,‘What do you suggest?’So I ask them how hungry they are. If they say,‘Not very.’I suggest the salad bar, with soup, salad, bread, and a fruit plate. But if they say they’re very hungry, I suggest a Kansas Strip Steak, with potatoes or rice. You get salad and bread as well. It’s very nice. Real good value”.
Ellen may get tired sometimes, but at least she’s learning too much about people. She’s learning too much about people. She’ll probably make a good animal doctor, but if she finds she doesn’t like it after all, she can become a psychiatrist(心理医生)instead.

Everyone loves a holiday! A little time off for some much-needed R & R (rest and relaxation) can be exactly the thing to refresh. That said, if you’re struggling to think of your next destination, then look no further. Don’t waste time debating, let your blood decide.
Everybody has a lineage (宗系). Recently, finding out more about our family origins has become popular. By the start of 2019, 26 million people had taken an ancestry DNA test at home, according to a report by MIT Technology Review. They believe by 2021 this number will have risen to 100 million.
This trend has been noticed by opportunistic travel operators. Some are looking to provide a service that both allows people to trace their heritage-by literally going back to their roots-and travel to the destinations where their ancestors originated from.
Airbnb, an online lodging marketplace, recently partnered with 23andMe, a DNA testing and analysis company, to offer recommendations that encourage travelers to walk in the footsteps of their forefathers. And they aren’t the only ones. The Shelbourne hotel in Dublin has its own advisor. Hellen Kelly offers consultations to help guests trace their Irish origin using official records. This allows them to ‘fill in the blanks of their Irish ancestry’, she told Good Morning America. The Conte Club, a luxury travel company, offers custom travels based on DNA tests. “These experiences are about exploring deeper into who we really are,” says Conte Club CEO Rebecca Fielding in an article in the Condé Nast Traveller. “It might be the most meaningful trip we can take.”
So next time you think of going on vacation, why not take a DNA test first? Once you know how far your family has come, take the time to holiday back.
1.What’s the purpose of the author to write the text?
A.To advise people to take a trip.
B.To persuade people to take a DNA test.
C.To introduce some famous travel operators.
D.To encourage people to take ancestry travels.

A.More people take time off for holidays.

With its fascinating and artistic accompanying music, singing and costumes, the Peking Opera is China’s national opera. Full of Chinese cultural facts, the opera presents the audience with an encyclopedia(百科全书)of Chinese culture, as well as developing stories, beautiful paintings, magnificent costumes, graceful gestures and martial arts. Since Peking Opera enjoys a higher reputation than other local operas, almost every province in China has more than one Peking Opera troupe. Opera is so popular among Chinese people, especially seniors, that even “Peking Opera Month” has been declared.
Peking Opera’s main tune originated from Xipi and Erhuang in Anhui and Hubei and, over time, techniques from many other local operas were incorporated into Peking Opera.
It is believed that Peking Opera gradually came into being after 1790 when the famous four Anhui opera troupes came to Beijing. Peking Opera experienced fast development during the period of Emperor Qianlong and the infamous Empress Cixi, eventually becoming more accessible to the common people.
In ancient times, Peking Opera was performed mostly on stage in the open air, teahouses or temple courtyards. Since the orchestra played loudly, the performers developed a sharp style of singing. The costumes were a gorgeous collection of sharply contrasting colors to stand out on the stage lighted only by oil lamps. Peking Opera is a harmonious combination of the Grand Opera, ballet and acrobatics (杂技),consisting of dance, dialogue and martial arts.
The Peking Opera band mainly consists of an orchestra and percussion(打击乐器)band. The former frequently accompanies peaceful scenes while the latter provides the right atmosphere for battle scenes. The orchestral instruments include the Erhu, Huqin, Yueqin, Sheng, Pipa and other instruments. The band usually sits on the left side of the stage.
