This is the colourful waste created by a Swedish city with a unique recycling system. Like many cities in Sweden,Eskilstuna has an impressive recycling record. It met the EU 2020 target of recycling 50%of waste many years ago. But almost everyone who lives here follows a strict recycling policy at home. People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons(纸板箱)and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright colour code.
The reason for this becomes clear at the city’s recycling plant. The bags arrive all jumbled up because they’re collected altogether in a rush, once a fortnight from outside people’s houses. But thanks to those bright colors, scanners can select the bags and separate them efficiently. The food waste in green bags is processed on site into a certain thick liquid to make burnable gas, which powers the city’s buses. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-pollution, so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things. Like the rest of Sweden,Eskilstuna is committed to sending zero waste from its citizens to landfill. Waste that cannot be recycled is burnt at a local plant to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, but does create greenhouse gases.
As countries around the world try to improve their recycling rates, some may look to Eskilstuna as an example to follow as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get busy sorting at home.
1.What can we learn about Eskilstuna?
A.It is flooded with colorful waste.
B.It is best-known for waste-recycling.
C.Waste there is painted into seven colors.
D.Rubbish recycling is handled seriously there.
2.What does the underlined word “jumbled” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Mixed together. B.Collected orderly.
C.Sealed cautiously. D.Piled purposefully.
3.What may the new recycle-system bring about?
A.The increase in the efficiency of waste recycling.
B.The convenience to the citizens in waste dropping.
C.The avoidance of rubbish related environmental problems.
D.The decrease of profit for waste plants.
4.Where is this text most likely from?
A.Parents. B.In style.
C.Fortune. D.The New York Times.

The snowy owl (雪鹗) is a white-colored owl with many unique characteristics. This bird bears a pure white appearance (only the male), with a rounded head, and black bill. While the male is actually a pure white individual, the female and young ones have a darker appearance with dusky spots. The female owl never attains complete whiteness in her lifetime. As young owls get older, they get whiter, losing their heavy stripes (条纹) and dark spots. This bird is between 18 to 20 inches long. Its Wingspan is 49 to 59 inches. It weighs between 3.5 to 6.5 pounds.
The snowy owl lives in the regions of Greenland, Iceland, Canada, and the northern parts of USA. Carolus Linnaeus was the first person to classify this bird. Apart from being the heaviest owl in North America, it is also the official bird of Quebec. It is known by other names such as “the Arctic Owl” or “the Great White Owl”. The reason for this bird’s adaptation to the cold temperatures of the Arctic Circle is its splendidly beautiful, white, and thick feathers. These feathers help it to survive the extreme cold and develop a perfect camouflage (伪装) in the “white” of its Arctic habitat.
The snowy owl is a very patient hunter, and it can sit in one place for hours. Gifted with great hearing and keen eyesight, it is known to be an efficient and clever hunter. It is not difficult for it to track down its prey, which might be barely visible under thick plants or snow cover. Before soaring off in pursuit, the bird waits patiently and identifies its potential prey. Once the prey comes within the proper range, it lays its attack with its sharp-hooked claws. It hunts both during the day and at night.
1.What can we conclude about the snowy owl from the first paragraph?
A. It is a bird with pure white feathers.
B. It is a bird which is big and heavy.
C. It has a white appearance with black spots.
D. The female owl is whiter than the male one.
2.Why can the snowy owl adapt to the cold climate of the Arctic Circle?
A. Thanks to its living areas. B. Because of its special feathers.
C. As a result of its clever mind. D. Owing to its strong wings.
3.What does the underlined expression “track down" mean?
A. chase B. find
C. attract D. recognize
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The brief introduction of the snowy owl.
B. The snowy owl is the heaviest bird in the world.
C. The snowy owl is first classified by Carolus Linnaeus.
D. The difference between the Arctic owl and the snowy owl.

Scotland is a unique place, loaded with history, where you can find aristocratic(贵族的)palaces and castles, as well as the traditional parades in national costumes.
In order to see and discover the true soul of Scotland today and what formed the character of this splendid region, we have to go towards the northern regions, to the Grampian Mountains(格兰扁山区), beautiful and plain. The Scots conquered the environment with simple spades and strong arms, for it was difficult to farm.
The history of this ancient struggle, and its people’s ancient love with the hard land, can be felt within the walls of the Angus Folk Museum. You are able to get a feel of the typical rural atmosphere of times past from the everyday artifacts displayed here.
From coastal Aberdeen in towards the Grampian Mountains there runs the Castle Trail, a road that touches on many fortresses(堡垒), which are witnesses of continual fights against the control of neighboring England in Scottish history.
Perhaps the most exciting moment for Scottish autonomy is the one experienced inside this ancient church of Arbroath, where, in 1320, the Declaration of Independence was celebrated, at the instigation(鼓动)of King Robert the Bruce. He carried out the plan for autonomy drawn up by the great popular hero William Wallace, for whom cinema has designed the wonderful film Brave Heart, the winner of the five Oscars.
This is Glamis Castle, where King Macbeth and Queen Elizabeth used to live. Among the most frequent guests here are the predictable ghosts, if not actually created, by ancient popular beliefs. These have been handed down over the centuries by people tending to live with mystery, with the forces of the supernatural.
Another attraction here is a legendary monster: the Loch Ness Monster. Whether it’s real or imaginary, this monster, which has been nicknamed Nessie, has collected a good 3,000 sightings over the last 50 years.
The true flag of Scotland, tartan, is recognizable from the brightly colored plaid patterns which are used to distinguish the various social groups.
Bagpipes and dancing open the competitions of local sporting events, which are called Highland Gatherings.

2.What were the fortresses built for?
A. Fighting against the invaders of England.

The very first capsule hotel to be opened in Shanghai has attracted many budget travelers with its prices, even though it is not fully operational yet.
The hotel consists of 68 "capsules", each 1.1-meters high, 1.1-meters wide and 2.2-meters long. The basic rate is 28 Yuan ($4.22) per person, plus an additional 4 Yuan an hour. The hotel also offers a package of 68 Yuan for 10 hours and 88 Yuan for 24 hours.
All of the capsules are imported from Japan where capsule hotels originated, and each is equipped with independent sockets, clocks, lights, TV and wireless Internet service. The hotel also has a public lavatory(洗手间),shower room, smoking room and shared guest room.
"This is a huge bargain compared with other budget hotels in Shanghai," said Ta Zan, the owner of the hotel. Ta used to stay at capsule hotels in Tokyo during his undergraduate years and worked at a capsule hotel while he was doing his MBA in Japan in 2005, so he knows how they work and how to make guests feel comfortable.
He based the hotel on capsule hotels in Japan but he has made some special changes based on Chinese guests' habits. "In Japan capsule hotels are usually equipped with bathtubs, but in China people are more willing to take a shower, so we have the shower room," he said. He has also separated the capsules into three snoring (打鼾的) zones so that guests who often snore won't disturb others. Like most of capsule hotels in Japan, the one in Shanghai is for men only.
But the idea of staying in such a compact space is not appealing to everyone. "I feel the idea is like putting a person in a coffin (棺材), and the price is also not that appealing. A bed at a youth hostel in Shanghai costs about 60 Yuan per night," said Wang Lei, a student from Beijing.
1.The first capsule hotels in the world appeared in ________.
A. Shanghai B. Japan C. Beijing D. America
2.If you stay in the capsule hotel in Shanghai for 8 hours, you will have to pay________yuan.
A. 28 B. 60 C.68 D.88
3.What does the underlined word "compact" mean?
A. Dear B. Cheap. C. Close. D. Clean.
4.The capsule hotel in Shanghai differs from those in Japan in that________.
A. it serves men as well as women
B. its capsule is much larger
C. it has a shower room
D. it has no snoring zones
5.We can know from the passage that________ .
A. everybody considers the capsule hotel a nice place to stay
B. all the capsules of the hotel were made in China
C. each capsule of the hotel has a private lavatory
D. no guest has ever stayed in the capsule hotel in Shanghai
