Shuai Yunyun, 21, from Shanghai University of Engineering Science found that her friends were all occupied with their smartphones during a high school friends meeting.Or they were busy taking pictures of their meal and writing descriptions, before uploading them to their micro blogs. For a while, silence fell.

“I thought that we had a lot of topics to share, but few people were really interested in talking,” she said. “It seemed that there?s a big gap between me and those with hand-held devices (设备)” .

Shuai, an aviation management major, is not the only one feeling segregated4 from others by mobile technology.According to a latest survey of hundreds of teenagers in Hong Kong by Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, 54.29 percent of them would use cellphones while having dinner with their families. It has affected relationships with their parents. It suggests that while technology such as cell phones, e-mails, and Internet posting has made us feel more connected than ever, they?re also driving us away from people around us.

Sherry Turkle, author of the article in The New York Times says people are now used to a new way of being “alone together.”

Actually, sending text messages or writing micro blogs allows us to exchange thoughts. But online connection cannot replace a “real conversation”.

Lan Guo, 19, a freshman English major from Changsha University, said that she would like to hear people?s voice and see their faces in a conversation. “The exchange of ideas in a conversation sharpens our minds,” she said. She also mentions that burying ourselves in mobile technology reduces our chance of starting conversations with strangers and meeting people.

However, experts remind us that it?s unfair to blame mobile technology. Chen Chen, a sociology expert points out that, it is still the mobile owners who?re avoiding personal contact.We ourselves use these devices to hide ourselves from others. Texting or calling may be an excuse to avoid contact with others, such as having eye contact. “The way to improve conversation is by understanding each other. Simply throwing away mobilephones is not a solution,” she said.

John B. Goodenough, an engineering professor from the University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry-jointly with M. Stanley Whittingham, a chemistry professor from the State University of New York and Japan’s Akira Yoshino, a professor of Meijo University-for the development of lithium-ion batteries (锂电池). According to the Nobel Committee, the three scientists “have created the right conditions for a wireless and fossil fuel-free society, and so brought the greatest benefit to humankind”.

Goodenough, born in 1922, identified and developed the key materials that can power portable electronics, leading to the wireless revolution. Today, batteries containing Goodenough’s innovations are used worldwide for mobile phones, power tools, laptops, tablets and other wireless devices, as well as electric vehicles.

Goodenough received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Yale University and a doctorate in physics from the university of Chicago. He beat the odds against him, first overcoming dyslexia (阅读困难症) as a child, and then the claim of a teacher who told the doctoral student in his 20s that he had started too late to be successful in physics.

He began his career in 1952 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory, where he laid the groundwork for the development of random-access memory (RAM) for the digital computer. After MIT, Goodenough became a professor and head of the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford where in 1979 he discovered it would be possible to store energy in rechargeable batteries through lithium cobalt oxide (锂钴氧化物).That discovery helped develop the lithium-ion battery. Goodenough joined the University of Texas at Austin in 1986, where his groundbreaking work continued.

At 97 years old, he still continues to push the boundaries of materials science. Despite the lithium-ion battery being well developed and available as a commercial product, it has its limitations. It can’t be charged too fast or overcharged. Goodenough still wants to see some new developments.

“I hope Ut-Austin still keeps me employed,” Goodenough once joked.

This July, Wang Chen, a student from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, won the International University WEICHI Tournament 2013 in Shanghai, which saw competitors from 54 universities around the world, including Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Wang is busier than most of his peers. I am a sophomore (大二学生) at Princeton University, where I am majoring in chemical engineering. I chose to study at UCD in the spring of 2015 primarily because I have always been interested in Ireland and Irish culture, but also to take advantage of UCD’s courses in pharmacology (药理学), a field not offered at my home school. I also chose UCD because of its Introduction to Scientific Research module, which matches visiting students with professors for a term-long research project, and because of the Science office’s friendliness and helpfulness. While at UCD I lived on campus, which allowed me to throw myself into everything the university has to offer. I was given the opportunity to work with Geraldine Butler’s lab. Living in Dublin provided a great opportunity for seeing the rest of Ireland and Europe. I spent my weekends and spring break traveling to every corner of the island, amazed at all of the history and natural beauty. I was also able to visit the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. After every trip, it was nice to return to friendly Dublin and head out with my roommates to one of our favorite pubs.

I would highly recommend studying abroad at UCD. I learned so much from my courses and my research project and had a wonderful time exploring Ireland. I can’t wait to come back!
