There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head.A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等强度的)exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.
“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,”said Dr.Clinton Wright of the University.Of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy.Walking, golf, bowling and yoga didn’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss,Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks.Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI.Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate heavy activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results,”the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it.The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.
1.According to the study, moderate heavy exercise________.
A.makes people’s heart better than their heads
B.helps people keep a younger brain
C.makes people ten years younger
D.makes people look like potatoes
2.What’s true about the study?
A.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.
B.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.
C.High-intensity exercise is better.
D.Ten people scored best on the test.
3.How did the study team come to the conclusion?
A.By observing people exercise.
B.By using examples.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By doing a brain MRI.
4.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.How to keep healthy
B.Ways to make your brain work better

Reading is good for you. There is increasing evidence to show that reading isn’t merely a way of improving literacy and knowledge, but that it might actually be good for one’s mental and physical health, too.
In the age of Twitter and short attention spans, reading novels, which requires intense concentration over a long period of time, could be the antidote(矫正方法).
Neuroscientists Baroness Susan Greenfield says that reading helps to lengthen attention spans in children and improve their ability to think clearly. “Stories have a structure that encourages our brain to think in sequence, to link cause, effect and significance,” she says “It is essential to learn this skill as a small child.”
“In a computer game, you might rescue a princess, but you don’t care about her, you just want to win,” she explains, “But a princess in a book has a past, present and future. You can relate to her. You see the world through her eyes”
According to professor John Stein, Oxford university, reading is far from a passive activity. “Reading exercises the whole brain,” he explains. “ When we get lost in a good book, we are doing more than following a story, Imaging what is happening is as good as activating the brain as doing it. In other words, our brains simulate(模仿) real experiences, and it is just as if we were experiencing them ourselves. This doesn’t happen when we are watching a TV or playing computer games.”
Getting stuck in a good novel appears to be good for one’s mental health. Reading helps one not only fights loneliness, but also forget one’s own problems for a while.
Researchers found that just six minutes of reading could reduce stress levels by more than two-thirds, more than listening to music or going out for a walk. The concentration required to read distracts the mind, easing muscle’s tension and slowing the heart rate. Reading may be good for physical health, too, by preventing brain aging and disease.
1.Which of the following statement is true about playing computer games?
A. It encourages our brains to think clearly
B. It makes people feel lonely
C. It makes the player concentrate on the result instead of the role in it
D. It can help lengthen one’s attention span.

B. is a passive activity
C. can active the brain
D. has the same results as watching TV

“It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good.” There are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.
That was before we entered the permissive(自由的) period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us.They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.

Yes, it does.It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’ s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’ s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.

Lack of exercise is considered a risk factor for cancer. There is considerable evidence that inactivity is connected with increased risk for lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.
In the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, more than 32,000 people (25,000 men and 7,000 women) were given a preventive medical examination that included a machine exercise test to measure physical fitness. They were given a physical fitness score, with one being the lowest and five being the highest fitness level. Then these people were followed for an average of 8 years. During this time, 179 men and 44 women died of cancer.
Data from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study show people have lower rates of cancer with higher levels of physical fitness. Studies from the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas suggest that men with high fitness levels are less likely to die of cancer.
The Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study also found that fitness level was more important than weight in predicting longevity (长寿). While results showed that fitness and normal weight are the ideal combination, researchers found that men who were fat but performed well in the machine performance had just a slightly increased all-cause death rate, including cancer, compared to the more slim men. The fat, but fit, men particularly lived longer than the slim, but flabby (肌肉松弛的), men.
These statistics called for a warning to the overweight: The first health goal for the overweight should be to become as fit as possible at their current weight.
67. 1.The text mainly talks about________.
A.the effect of exercise on reducing chances of cancer
B.how to lose weight effectively
C.different ways to keep slim
D.fat men live longer than slim ones
68. 2.What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The study on the life of the overweight.
B.The study on the relationship between taking exercise and cancer.
C.The study on the ways of losing weight.
D.The study on the effects of machine exercise.
69. 3.Which of the following is NOT true according to Paragraph 4?
A.Fitness levels have more effects than weight on people’s longevity.
B.A man who is fit and has normal weight is most likely to live longer.
C.Slim men are more likely to live longer.
D.Fat people who like exercising are also likely to live longer.
70. 4.The author thinks the most important thing for the overweight is to ______.
A.increase their fitness levels B.choose to eat vegetables
C.be on a diet D.ask for help from doctors

Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate from the bottom of your heart, for he was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When asked how he was able to do so, he would reply,“ If I were any better, I would be twins!”
There was no doubt that Jerry was unique because he had several followers who were in his shadow from restaurant to restaurant. Obviously, these colleagues were greatly touched by Jerry’s attitude so as to follow him here and there. Being a natural motivator, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation whenever he or she was having a bad day.
Curious about his style, I went up to Jerry and asked him, “ I can’t believe it! You can’t be a positive person all the time. How do you do it? ” Jerry replied, “ Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or to point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.”
“Yeah, right, it’s not that easy,” I protested. “ Yes, it is,” Jerry said. “ Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It’s your choice how you live life.”
I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon after I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination(密码组合). The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments(碎片) of the bullets still in his body.
I bumped into Jerry about six months after the terrifying accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, “ If I were any better, I’d be twins. Want to see my scars(伤疤)?” I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,” Jerry replied. “ Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.” “Weren’t you scared?” I asked.
Jerry continued, “The paramedics(护理人员)were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read,‘ He’s a dead man.’ I knew I needed to take action.” “What did you do?” I asked. “Well, there was a big nurse shouting questions at me,” said Jerry. “She asked if I was allergic to anything. ‘Yes’ I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Bullets(子弹)!’. Over their laughter I told them, ‘I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.’ ”
Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his experienced doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
1.By saying “If I were any better, I would be twins!”(Paragraphs 1&7), Jerry means that_________.
A. he felt depressed in life
B. he was content with his life
C. he regretted not having a twin brother
D. he attempted to live as good a life as his twin brother
2.According to Paragraph 3, what did the writer think of Jerry’s positive thinking style at first?
A. He accepted it and tried to copy it.
B. He was jealous of and even hated it.
C. He was in favor of and reflected on it.
D. He failed to understand it and tended to confirm it.
3.Why did Jerry think he needed to take action in hospital?
A. He couldn’t bear the rudeness of a big nurse.
B. The medical staff were not skilled enough to save him.
C. He was in danger and had to follow the nurses’ instructions.
