高三英语阅读理解中等难度题查看答案及解析
Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed a stricter nationwide health standard for smog-causing pollutants that would bring substantial benefits to millions of Americans. With a final rule expected by the end of this month, some opponents, mainly from industrial and oil-producing states, are pushing back. They say investments required to produce cleaner air are too expensive and not scientifically justified.
Lisa Jackson, the E.P.A. administrator, needs to stick to her guns. This is only the first of several political tests to come this fall, as she also seeks to tighten rules governing individual pollutants like mercury and global warming gases like carbon dioxide.
The health standard she is proposing covers ground-level ozone, commonly known as smog, which is formed when sunlight mixes with pollutants from factories, refineries, power plants and automobiles. Ozone is a major health threat, contributing to heart disease and various respiratory (呼吸道的) problems.
Ms. Jackson’s proposal—to reduce the permitted level of smog in the air from the current 75 parts per billion to between 60 parts per billion and 70 parts per billion—is sensible, no matter what industry’s defenders may claim. It had been recommended by the agency’s independent scientific panel but rejected by the Bush administration, which proposed a weaker standard.
Industry will have to make investments in cleaner power plants, and new technologies may be required. As it is, about half the counties that monitor ozone levels are not yet in compliance with current standards, let alone the proposed standard.
Fears about burdening industry raised by critics like George Voinovich, a Republican of Ohio, and Mary Landrieu, a Democrat of Louisiana, cannot be dismissed out of hand, especially in the middle of a recession (萧条). But the health benefits, E.P.A. says, far outweigh the costs, and the time frame for compliance (服从) is generous.
1.Why are some people strongly against a stricter limitation of smog-caused pollutants?
A.Because they have to live a poorer life.
B.Because they think they have to spend more money.
C.Because they hold different political view.
D.Because they want to make more money.
2. What does Ms Jackson propose to do?
A.To reduce the permitted smog level as much as possible.
B.To raise the permitted smog level as much as possible.
C.To keep the permitted smog level from 60 to 70 to 75 parts per billion.
D.To lower the permitted smog level from 75 to 60 to 70 parts per billion.
3.What is the attitude of the author to the smog-controlling issue?
A.Objective. B.Subjective. C.Critical. D.Unknown.
4.Which of the following can serve as the best title of the whole passage?
A.Cleaner power plant on the way.
B.Say no to smog pollutants.
C.Lower smog pollutant, better our life.
D.Debate on smog pollutants.

A
●NATURAL BEAUTY: OUR ENVIRONMENT
Anne Bowen, an art teacher, always emphasized environmental themes in her classes. She channels her concern for the environment into her artwork, which you can see in her "Our Environment" exhibition, at the Carrollwood Cultural Center in Tampa. Bowen uses mixed media (pen and ink, colored pencils and paint) to describe nature, using patterns that echo the symmetry(对称) found there. She’s also interested in the ways animals live together in groups, which she explores in her piece Monarch Butterflies(pictured). She hopes her art inspires viewers to come up with solutions to environmental problems. Bowen’s commitment to environmental preservation isn’t just lip service; she’ll donate half of her sales profits to the Sierra Club. In addition to "Our Environment", members of the Exhibiting Society of Artists have an exhibition in the gallery. The opening reception for both shows is 5—8 p.m. Friday. 4537 Lowell Road. (813) 269-1310.
●ABSTRACTIONS: UNFURLED
Local artist Dominique Martinez, the creative force behind Rustic Steel Creations, bought and renovated the old Tampa Heights Fire Station No. 5, which became Red Door No. 5. Each month, the gallery features local artists with an opening reception in conjunction with First Friday Art in the Heights. This Friday’s exhibition, "Unfurled", features abstract artists Stephanie Ong and Laura Kmetz.
Ong’s paintings are a form of communication using light, scale and color. Her latest series, "Habitats", explores transitions in life. Kmetz’s works are deep concentrations of nature and objects, which she explores through multilayered, mixed-media works. She seeks to reveal the essence of things, finding their meaning and offer associations with displacement, loss, search, recovery and preservation. The opening reception is 7—10 p.m. 1910 N Florida Ave. The gallery’s hours after that are by appointment.
【题文1】What is the theme of Anne Bowen’ "Our Environment" exhibition?
A. Her interest in her art work. B. Her experience in her teaching.

【题文2】 What is Anne Bowen’s intention of displaying her Monarch Butterflies?
A. To remind people to care about the environment.
B. To exhibit her discovery in environmental problems.
C. To show her contribution in environmental preservation.
D. To call on viewers to donate for environmental protection.
【题文3】What do Stephanie Ong and Laura Kmetz show in this Friday’s exhibition "Unfurled"?
A. Pictures of human figures. B. Visual aesthetic(美感) of nature.
C. Meaning of natural preservation. D. Abstract works that show their exploration.
高三英语阅读理解中等难度题查看答案及解析
Plastics are considered one of the most serious pollutants causing environmental problems. The garbage containing plastics end up in the waterways that eventually flow into the oceans. Accumulation (聚集)of plastic in the ocean endangers marine life and pollutes the water.
Does a plastic continent exist? Yes, a plastic continent does exist and was discovered by Captain Charles Moore a decade ago. The plastic continent is twice the size of Britain and it is the region between the Hawaii Islands and California in the central Pacific Ocean.
One of the causes of the lack of marine life in this region is due to pollution and pollutants are none other than plastics. Captain Charles Moore believes plastic waste started accumulating in the 1950s.
The plastic continent is the man-made continent of floating plastic waste. The fisher men and the sailors have avoided this region for years. The reasons are:
1. There are no fish here because of the lack of nutrients.
2. The zone also lacks the wind that is essential for sailing.
To do research on the ocean pollution, Captain Moore founded Algalita Marine Research Foundation. Other organizations such as Greenpeace supported his cause. The reports of The United Nations Environment Program show that millions of seabirds and marine animals are dying due to the invasion(入侵)of plastics. The waste plastics can be recycled, but in fact they are being thrown into the oceans. The marine animals mistake these for food and eat them. This leads to their death that affects the marine food chain.
To save the oceans from the plastic continent you need to reduce the use of plastics, reuse plastic bags and recycle plastics.
1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.A plastic continent does exist in the Pacific Ocean |
B.Endangered marine life is well protected. |
C.Plastics are one of the main causes of water pollution. |
D.Plastics should be forbidden in people’s daily life. |
2. What is the direct influence of the plastic continent?
A.Local fishermen have to fish in other areas. |
B.The water becomes shallow and fish have to move away. |
C.The wind is too strong there and it makes sailing more difficult. |
D.It makes people realize the importance of protecting the environment. |
3. It is implied that the work of plastic recycling proves to be ______.
A.effective | B.expensive | C.a difficult task | D.not good enough |
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Many marine animals are dying due to the broken marine food chain. |
B.Captain Moore founded Greenpeace to do research on the ocean pollution. |
C.The marine animals have no choice but to eat plastics for lack of food. |
D.There are three ways to prevent the oceans from becoming a plastic continent. |
