I am a sophomore (大二学生) at Princeton University, where I am majoring in chemical engineering. I chose to study at UCD in the spring of 2015 primarily because I have always been interested in Ireland and Irish culture, but also to take advantage of UCD’s courses in pharmacology (药理学), a field not offered at my home school. I also chose UCD because of its Introduction to Scientific Research module, which matches visiting students with professors for a term-long research project, and because of the Science office’s friendliness and helpfulness. I am convinced that I made the best possible decision!
While at UCD I lived on campus, which allowed me to throw myself into everything the university has to offer. I was given the opportunity to work with Geraldine Butler’s lab. I loved it so much that I ended up heading to the lab almost every weekday, whenever I wasn’t attending my always-interesting classes in pharmacology. After lab, I enjoyed a variety of after-school activities—that was certainly a new experience for me.
Living in Dublin provided a great opportunity for seeing the rest of Ireland and Europe. I spent my weekends and spring break traveling to every corner of the island, amazed at all of the history and natural beauty. I was also able to visit the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. After every trip, it was nice to return to friendly Dublin and head out with my roommates to one of our favorite pubs.
I would highly recommend studying abroad at UCD. I learned so much from my courses and my research project and had a wonderful time exploring Ireland. I can’t wait to come back!

Dr. Raint Mishor, of Georgetown University Hospital says many people believe it’s possible to become immune to colds. Unfortunately , that’s not the case . “ There are about 200 different viruses that cause the common cold and people think that once you get infected one time you develop immunity for the rest of your life . This is wrong . ‘‘She said .
There are many other common beliefs about colds that medical science doesn’t support. How many of us believe the main cause of the common cold is exposure to cold temperatures? Even some studies have shown that people get sick more frequently during the winter .
But Dr. Mishori says it is not because of cold weather. “ It’s because people tend to congregate and be together and the way the common cold virus is transmitted from one person to another is through handshake , through sneezing , or through coughing on one another.
While there is no actual cure for the common cold , Dr. Mishori says there are still a few things you can do to help reduce its duration and intensity . Though the medical community says Vitamin C does not help prevent colds , there is definitely some proof that it helps keep them from being as bad. “ So if you catch a cold and on day once you start taking about two grams of Vitamin C a day there is evidence that it might shorten the number of days that you will be suffering with these symptoms.” Dr . Mishori stated.
In addition , medical science sys honey and chicken soup are effective against colds. Especially honey .” There is increased evidence that it helps shorten the duration do the common cold sometimes even by two to three days particularly in children,” Dr. Mishori said. “ Chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties so it helps reduce the duration of the cold but it also helps clear the mucus.
There’s also a common belief that you should “ feed a cold ant starve a fever.” Dr. Mishori says “ not necessary “. ‘ If you do have a cold and you don’t feel like eating anything it’s not going to hurt you bur you have to drink a lot and you can drink water or you can drink tea anything that gets fluids into your body , “ she said , “ That’s very important.”
So if drinking fluids is a good idea What about milk ? “ I will never give milk to a a child who has got bad phlegm. My son used to have that and he would throw up . “ Nadine Audrewy , the Hemmens kids’ grandmother , believes it’s not a good idea to give milk to a child who has a cold .
Well ,says Dr. Mishori ,maybe and maybe not .” Dairy products do not cause increased secretions but they can thicken the secretions,” she explained. ‘So it’s possible that discomfort is somewhat more enhanced when you drink milk , but obviously if you are a baby and its’s all you drink then you should not stop giving babies milk.
There are many other myths about colds that do not pass science muster . Doctors say the best advice is to continue using whatever works best for you . Even if it doesn’t make the cold better , it won’t make it worse either while you wait for the cold to just run its natural course.

Going to university is supposed to be a mind-broadening experience.
That assumption is possibly made in contrast to training for work straight after school. But is it actually true? Jessika Golle of the University of Tubingen, Germany, thought she would try to find out.
Her result, however, is not quite what might be expected. It shows that those who have been to university do indeed seem to leave with broader and more inquiring minds than those who have spent their immediate post-school years in vocational training for work. However, it is not the case that university broadens minds. Rather, work seems to narrow them.
After studying the early career of 2095 German youngsters, Dr. Golle reached the conclusion.
During the period under investigation, Germany had three tracks in its schools: a low one for pupils who would most probably leave school early and enter vocational training; a high one for those almost certain to enter university; and an intermediate one, from which there was a choice between the academic and vocational routes.
The team used two standardized tests to assess their volunteers. One was of personality traits and the other of attitudes. They administered both tests twice once towards the end of each volunteer’s time at school, and then again six years later.
Of the original group, 382 were on the intermediate track, and it was on these that the researchers focused. Of them, 212 went to university and the remaining 170 chosen for vocational training and a job.
When it came to the second round of tests, Dr Golle found that the personalities of those who had gone to university had not apparently changed. Those who had undergone vocational training and then got jobs were not that much changed in personality, either except in one crucial respect they had become more responsible.
That sounds like a good thing, compared with the common public image of undergraduates as a bunch of pampered layabouts(娇生惯养的闲人). But changes in attitude the researchers recorded were more worrying. In the university group, again, none were detectable. But those who had chosen the vocational route showed marked drops in interest in tasks that are investigative and enterprising in nature.
And that might restrict their choice of careers. Some investigative and enterprising jobs, such as scientific research, are, indeed off limits to the degreeless.
But many, particularly in Germany, with its tradition of vocational training, are not. The researchers mention, for example, computer programmers, finance-sector workers and entrepreneurs as careers requiring these attributes.
If Dr Golle is correct, and changes in attitude brought about by the very training Germany prides itself on are narrowing people’s choices, that is indeed a matter of concern.
1.Compared with students going to university, those choosing the vocational route__________.
A. show more changes in their attitudes
B. find it more difficult to land suitable jobs
C. are more interested in tasks related to science
D. are more responsible and do their work better
2.The underlined word “detectable” in Para.9 can be replaced by___________.
A. desirable B. predictable C. noticeable D. changeable
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. University graduates don’t need to receive training at all.
B. Germany should change the tradition of vocational training.
C. People without a degree may find a limit to their choices of careers.
D. In comparison with vocational training, universities can greatly broaden people’s minds.
4.In which column of a magazine can you find the passage?
