Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein ,in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.
Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes ,Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.
The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. ”Maybe I could go as Superman ,”he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume(戏装),finally she agreed.
The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation.
The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it ,”If you can dream it, you can do it”
It doesn‘t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But, next time you are texted in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it .Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.

C.She wanted Tom to be a superhero D.She wanted to get Tom through the pain
3.When Tom went for the third operation,he________.
A.pretended to be painful B.acted like a superhero
C.appeared in poor spirit s D.argued with his mother
4.In the last paragraph, you are advised________.
A.to go through some difficult tests
B.to wake up from your wild dreams
C.to become a powerful person in your mind
D.to wear expensive clothes for job interviews

In our life of journey, we each have important roles to play. Some are conductors and some are singers. And the rest are heroes in the supporting cast(配角演员) and are necessary to complete the different tasks in life. The “stars” would be greatly darkened if the individual heroes don’t support their performances. The magical accents of the performance section might sound terrible and out of place, unless you could also hear the music they accompany. Even one member of an orchestra doing less than their best could stop the harmony of the musical piece.
So even though you may not receive the attention of the other performers, your contribution is valuable and a unique part of the success of the whole in the life you lead.
When you do your job well, you put your own unique energy into the task. Each of us has a different personality and a different talent, just suited for the different roles we support. We can look around us at any moment and identify with the people we work with. Doing your job well displays your ability and gratitude, while learning the lessons from others can move us towards our goals.
When you are fully present in the job you do, you bring the fullness of your mind, body, and spirit to the moment. Your contribution is strengthened by your talents and abilities, and they can attract the right people and circumstances to your experience. You are playing your role to your very best. You are giving your best to be the world and making it a better place for all of us to live in. Remember, each of us is expected to be the best.
1.What does the first paragraph mainly discuss?
A. The “stars’ also need many other people’s support.
B. One person might perform different roles.
C. You are a failure unless you become the “stars’.
D. The “stars” are successful because of their own efforts.
2.According to the author, doing the job well can help you _________.
A. get a rise in your company
B. show your ability and talents
C. receive the attention of others
D. get a sense of success

Nowadays, cars are playing an increasingly important role in daily life and many societies would stop functioning without them. So, the claim that in 20 years’ time, no one will own cars may be hard to believe. But this is the prediction made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by governments but also by car manufacturers.
The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program. The team there believes that by 2040 all cars will be computerized, which will mean extremely large fuel savings, no accidents and better use of roads. The super-intelligent car of the 21st century will drive itself and it will not be owned by one individual. Instead, we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.
According to Dr. David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air and caused more deaths than both world wars put together.
Davis says cars will be fitted with intelligent cruise control devices to regulate the distance between one car and another. Brakes and accelerators will become redundant(多余的)because the car will automatically speed up or slow down to match the speed of the car in front. Computers are much safer drivers than people, so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people so that the roads can be made the best of.
By 2030 Dr. David Davis believes car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road whatever the weather conditions by projecting an image of the road ahead onto the car’s windscreen. And by 2040 cars will travel in convoy(组队) linked to each other electronically. Cars will be connected by an electronic tow(牵引) bar to the car in front to form “road-trains”. “The front vehicle in such a train burns the ordinary fuel” says Davis. “But all the others in the train would burn about ten percent of the normal amount and so produce about ten percent of the pollution.”
1.We learn from the passage that governments and car manufactures .
A. don’t believe the prediction that no one will own cars by 2020
B. are devoted to the technological innovation (创新) in car industry
C. consider the predictions made by the researchers seriously
D. have put the super-intelligent car into mass production
2.Which of the following will NOT be the characteristics of the cars of 2040?
A. There will be no brake and accelerator in cars. B. We will own as many cars as we want.
C. All cars will be driven by computers. D. Car accident will no longer happen.
3.Davis believes that the present car culture will change because .
A. cars play an important role in daily life
B. many societies would stop working without cars
C. cars should not be owned by one individual
D. it causes more and more pain to human society
4.Which of the following sentences can explain better use of roads by 2040 mentioned in the passage?
A. Computer-driven cars can drive much closer together than cars driven by people.
B. Motorists can have a clear view of the road whatever the weather conditions are.
C. Cars will travel in convoy linked to each other by an electronic tow bar.
D. Intelligent cruise control devices can regulate the distance between one car and another.
5.What will happen if cars are linked to each other electronically in 2040?
A. Motorists will get a clear view of the road.
B. The weather conditions won’t have effect on motorists.
C. There will be a decrease in the pollution caused by car.
D. All trains will burn less fuel than present.
