Last night, on my way home I stopped because of being attracted by some hamburgers at a fast food restaurant. On my way in, a homeless man approached me and asked, “Do you have any bottles lying around?” I knew he would recycle them for a few cents, but I didn’t have any, so I said no. And again he asked, “Can you spare some change ?” I smiled, and said no again. He was very respectful; he smiled back and said, “OK, thank you.” Even though he didn’t have anything, he was still in good spirits. From the way he spoke I could tell he was smart.
Then I bought one hamburger and enjoyed my meal, but in the back of my mind I wondered whether the homeless man was hungry. After I finished my meal I decided to order another one for him. At this point I didn’t know if he was still around, but I tried anyway.
At the counter I ordered a hamburger and also a hot chocolate, because it was cold outside, and I thought it would help warm him up. They delivered me the hot chocolate first and as I waited for my hamburger, I noticed the homeless man was standing right beside me. I looked at him and smiled, “This hot chocolate is for you.” He replied like a gentleman, “Thank you so much. That’s very kind of you.”
I always believe no matter how hard up I am, there are always those who are worse off than I. When you help someone, it’s not always about money, it’s about love. The love you give today, someone might forget tomorrow. It doesn’t matter. Love anyway, because the greatest thing you can give is love.

My passion started decades ago as a kid on a flight to India. I was attracted by how such a large airplane was able to glide(滑翔)smoothly above the clouds. I made it a goal to become a pilot. I am now a pilot for American airlines. Though being a pilot consumes my life,it is a job worth doing.
My job is slightly different compared to that of a typical pilot. Most pilots have their routes they fly. They then familiarize(使…熟悉)themselves with the routes. However, in my case,I participate in any job where a pilot is immediately required. It is true that some days I might have a workday from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon. In fact, some days,I might even begin my work at three in the morning when I am needed to fly. Sometimes, as for the typical day,I do not have one.
Having been on the job for over two decades,I have learned some important life lessons. As I greet passengers boarding the airplane,I realize I,along with other airline pilots, have enhanced(提高)the lives of those who we are serving. In fact, there is one particular experience that I will never forget. A family was walking in from the gate, explaining that their beloved one was ill and had to be taken to a big hospital in another city immediately. It was at this point that I realized just how important my job was.
Therefore, my life as an airline pilot is definitely not for everyone. However,my job is something I enjoy thoroughly and will continue to do till I am old enough. As a pilot, I have been able to experience so many different types of situations in different places throughout the world. For anyone interested in piloting, I would recommend going for it.

My kids and I were heading into the superstore over the weekend. On the way, we saw a man covered by a blanket and holding a sign that said, "Lost my job. Family to Feed."
At this store, a sight like this is not normal. It was obvious that the man was embarrassed, but desperate. My 10-year-old noticed him and said how bad it must be to have to stand outside in the cold wind.
While we were in the store, I asked each of the kids to pick something they thought our "friend" outside would need. They picked a couple of apples, a package of bread, a sandwich, some cheese and a bottle of juice. Then my 17-year-old asked, "Can we get him a gift card?" I thought about it. We were low on cash ourselves, but …well, sometimes giving from our "need" instead of our "abundance (充裕)" is just what we need to do! All the kids declared something they could do away with for the week.
We quickly checked out, with the foods he could eat at the moment, and a gift card for the store. At the suggestion of my 16-year-old, we also bought a hot cup of coffee, and then drove to the end of the parking lot, where our "friend" was holding his sign.
We handed him the coffee and the bag of food. He thanked us with watery eyes. When I handed him the gift card and said he could use it for whatever his family might need, he burst into tears, obviously overwhelmed and grateful.
Though I wished we could have done more, I can't help but think about how this experience has been such a wonderful opportunity for our family. The feeling of helping someone else has affected them all---they cannot stop talking about it, and for four days now have been searching for others we can help!
Things would have played out so differently if I had simply said, "No, we really don't have money to give more," or something to that effect. Stepping out not only helped a brother in need, it also gave my kids the______ taste of helping others.
