We know that in many cases things aren’t personal, but we tend to think that things are about us, whether good or bad. For instance, when your friends go on a night out without inviting you, you probably get upset and end up shouting at them. If you tend to take things so personally, then this will be upsetting you and damaging your self-respect--- and it might also be putting unnecessary stress on your relationships. So it’s important for us to take some steps to stop taking things so personally.
Firstly, assess the situation more logically. Don’t give in to your immediate emotional reaction---rather take a step back and think about what has happened. For instance, if you’re upset because weren’t invited to an event, then think it like this: Was it an event that they maybe thought you wouldn’t be interested in? Or was it an event that perhaps they didn’t think you could make? When you step back and stop being egocentric(以自我为中心), then you’ll easily see many other possible reasons for your not being invited.
Also don’t blame yourself. Sometimes, the person does mean to be critical and rude. However, you can view this as their problem and not as something you’ve done wrong. If someone you know is regularly acting badly towards you, it may even be that they feel threatened by you because they’re impressed by you--- actually that’s a compliments(褒扬)in a way.
Focusing on the positive is also important. Our friends say countless nice things about us on an average day and this helps to slowly develop our self-confidence. If someone has given us 20 compliment and one insult, then why should this damage our self-confidence? If you’re feeling low, try to think back to the positive things that have been said to you.

Would you work for nothing? Non-paid internships(实习生) have been common in the US for some time now. But these days, they are becoming more and more popular in other countries, too. Is this a good thing?
For young people, there are clear benefits to doing an internship. Firstly, interns get a valuable insight into an industry they might be interested in working for. Also, having done an internship looks good on your CV, which is very important in today’s competitive job market. A lucky few may be hired at the end of the internship, so it’s a good way of getting a foot in the door. For other interns, there is even extra welfare: deals on clothes if they’re working in the fashion in industry, free trips if they’re working for a travel agency…and so on.
There are obvious benefits to companies, too. They can help select employees who are better. “If you put two young people to work as interns for twelve weeks, you’ll soon see who is good.” said one manager. Besides, they can save money. “If I use interns, I don’t have to pay another salary, or worry about paying pensions or giving people overtime pay.” said another.
So, what do interns do? Most tasks are fairly routine. These may include photocopying, filing documents, or writing up notes from meetings. At times, interns may be given jobs with more responsibility, such as making sales calls, writing newsletters or updating websites.
However, for some interns the experience can become unpleasant. “I worked for a theatre company for six weeks and spent the whole time photocopying scripts and making the tea and coffee. It is dull.” said one intern. On the other hand, non-paid internships violate the labor law in some countries, where workers must be paid the minimum wage and paid for overtime.
Internship can provide benefits to both sides, but these unpaid workers are also easy to take advantage of!

Learning to improve your focus is difficult, because you are talking long hours a day. However, if you break down your day into manageable time sections, it would be much easier to learn to improve your focus.
Focus, or concentration, is a skill that can be taught, so there are some exercises you can do to improve your focus.
Start with easy exercises like staring a picture on the wall for a few minutes without moving or talking. Once you learn how to block out your surroundings, your focus will improve.
Other mind exercises are internalizing (内化). This is when you imagine yourself in a desired situation, and then you work around your imagination. Actors and singers do this to block all distractions.
If this sounds a little strange, you could try making lists? List the things you need to accomplish for the morning, for the afternoon, and finally for the evening. For instance, if you have a dinner that evening, don’t arrange everything in the afternoon, and give yourself some time to relax before the guests arrive.
Another way to improve your focus is to take breaks. During your breaks, you should allow yourselves a drink or 30 minutes on TV. If you are having coffee breaks in your office, use this time wisely. Don’t spend it with your co-worker talking about problems. Your breaks should be as quiet as possible.
The reason why you lose focus so easily is that you have too much on your minds. Of course, it could also be because you are bored with nothing to do all day. A good balance between a too relaxed brain and an overly active brain is a desirable situation. Improving your focus also mean knowing what you can do and being confident about doing it well.

Like our body, our memory needs regular exercise to be in good condition. Like the sportsman who must train to allow the body to respond to difficult times, the memory needs its own special training in order to stay in “shape” and improve.
There are many factors that can cause poor memory like insomnia (失眠), depression and alcohol. However, there are simple ways which you can follow to keep your memory in shape and actually help you to improve your memory’s condition and performance.
Never stop learning. Look for topics that interest you and really get involved in learning new information about them. Reading and attending lectures or programs are sources of continuous education of your brain with beneficial results to your memory.
Develop your social and family relationships. The more social you are, the better it is for your brain. Studies have shown that the brain and heart have a lot to gain from good family and social relationships.
Exercise your mind with games. The more you use your brain, the more you help your memory stay in shape. There are many games that can make you an intelligent person as well as entertain you such as chess, puzzles and board games.
Exercise physically can improve your memory. This type of exercise improves the circulatory (血液循环的) system. Even the simple but regular daily exercise such as fast walking can improve the heart and oxygenation(供氧) of the brain. The benefits of exercise affect positively many body systems, as well as our memory and other cognitive(认知的) capabilities.
Eat more fruit and vegetables. What we eat every day affects the performance and long-term condition of our memory. Fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of antioxidants(抗氧化剂) and vitamins that can help and benefit the nervous system.
So our memory is like a sportsman. The more we practice our brains and memory, the better their performance will be.

The girls in this sixth grade class in East Palo Alto, California, all have the same access to computers as boys. But researchers say, by the time they get to high school, they are victims of what the researchers call a major new gender (性别) gap in technology. Janice Weinman of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) says, "Girls tend to be less comfortable than boys with the computer. They use it more for word processing rather than for problem solving, rather than to discover new ways in which to understand information.
After re-examining a thousand studies, the AAUW researchers found that girls make up only a small percentage of students in computer science classes. Girls rate themselves significantly lower than boys in their ability and confidence in using computers. And they use computers less often than boys outside the classroom.
An instructor of a computer lab says he's already noticed some difference. Charles Cheadle of Cesar Chavez School says, "Boys are not so afraid they might do something that will harm the computer, whereas girls are afraid they might break it somehow."
Six years ago, the software company Purple Moon noticed that girls' computer usage was falling behind boys. Karen Gould with the company says, "The number one reason girls told us they don't like computer games is not that they're too violent, or too competitive. Girls just said they're unbelievably boring." What girls want, Purple Moon found, is characters they can relate to and story lines relative to what's going on in their own lives. "What we definitely found from girls is that there is no intrinsic (内在的) reason why they wouldn't want to play on a computer; it was just a content thing," says Karen Gould.
The sponsor of the study says it all boils down to this: the technology gender gap that separates the girls from the boys must be closed if women are to compete effectively with men in the 21st century.
What has caused the new gender gap in technology?
I. The present situation:
Before high school: ◆Girls use computers 71 boys.
In high school: ◆Girls make up 72 in computer science classes.
◆Girls feel less comfortable with the computer.
◆Boys use computers 73 often than girls after class.
◆Boys feel more 74 when using computers.
II. The 75 of the situation:
What they do with a computer:
◆Girls prefer to use computers for _ 76 .
◆Boys prefer to use computers for 77 and understanding information.
How they feel about a computer:
◆Girls are afraid of breaking it.
◆Boys are 78 such worry.
Their 79 to computer games:
◆Girls think they are boring because the characters are irrelevant to their lives.
◆Boys don’t have such feelings.
III. The appeal from 80 :
◆The technology gender gap must be closed.

Ready to give up long showers, water parks, and unlimited water gushing(喷涌) out of your taps? A new study says more than three-hundred-thirty-five-million people are faced with water shortage now. The oceans are full, of course. But the liquid—fresh, clean water for drinking and watering crops is in short supply in many parts of the world. Rivers are running low, lakes are shrinking, streams have stopped flowing, and groundwater is being pumped dry. However, the demand for water keeps increasing. So there comes inevitably the water crisis!
What is causing the crisis? Experts say it is a complex combination of climate change and rapid population growth. On the one hand, global climate change threatens to reduce water supplies due to decreased rainfall. On the other hand, population growth is driving explosive demand for water, prompting rivers in thirsty countries to be tapped for nearly every drop and driving governments to pump out so-called fossil water.
Lack of water may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking waters are not safe. Lack of water may also result in more international conflict. Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. And lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.
One partial answer to the world water shortage, at least for countries near the sea, is to build more desalination plants that change seawater into fresh water. Another suggested solution is for water-rich countries, such as Canada, to sell water to countries which are poor in water. A third suggestion is for countries to adopt ways of increasing the freshwater supply, such as teaching farmers in Africa methods to get clean rainwater. And nearly everyone agreed that the amount of water on our planet can’t be changed, but the way we use it can be if more people realized the problem. Last and the most important, public should be aware of saving water to defeat the water crisis.

The art of growing dwarf (short) trees, or “bonsai” as their Japanese planters call them, is increasing in popularity in the United States. Growing bonsai can make a fascinating hobby for anyone who enjoys plants and creating beautiful effects with them. However, how can we meet the goal of making such a kind of art? This maybe is the problem for many of us.
There are, in fact, four important guidelines to follow in growing bonsai. First, one must be careful in choosing the type of tree. Not all species of trees can be made into bonsai, since the growing conditions are unusual.
Second, one must be careful in choosing the size of the container the bonsai will be in. This is necessary because the major growth of bonsai is kept confined to the tree’s trunk and leaves, not its root system.
Another thing the bonsai-grower must do is to trim (修整) the roots and branches of the tree periodically(定期地). Unless this is done, the plants will look unnatural. The Japanese ideal for bonsai is not to have the proper proportions and will have trees which are just like normal trees in everything, but in small size.
The last thing one must do is to be careful to keep the miniature(small)tree well-watered, or it will die.
As one can see from above, the art of bonsai-growing is one which requires a certain amount of time and effort. The satisfactions that growing bonsai brings can be great, however. Imagine having such a tree in your living room and passing it down through several generations of your family. That is exactly what bonsai-growing is all about:establishing a tradition of beauty which lasts for years and years and is a symbol of the beauties of the natural world.

The World Bank, the United Nations and the London School Of Hygiene and Tropica1 Medicine did a study to urge hand-washing around the world. They found that one million lives could be saved each year if people washed their hands with soap often. They said that programs to increase hand-washing with soap could be among the most effective ways to reduce infectious disease.
Doctors say, many diseases can be prevented from spreading by hand-washing. These include pinworms (寄生虫), influenza (流行性感冒), the common cold, hepatitis (肝炎) A, meningitis (脑膜炎) and infectious diarrhea (腹泻).
Hand-washing destroys germs from other people, animals or objects a person has touched. When people get bacteria on their hands, they can infect themselves by touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Then these people can infect other people.
The experts say the easiest way to catch a cold is to touch your nose or eyes after someone nearby has sneezed or coughed. Another way to become sick is to eat food prepared by someone whose hands were not clean.
The experts say that hand-washing is especially important before and after preparing food, before eating and after using the toilet. People should wash their hands after handling animals or animal waste, and after cleaning a baby. The experts say it is also a good idea to wash your hands after handling money and after sneezing or coughing. And it is important to wash your hands often when someone in your home is sick. The experts say the most effective way to wash your hands is to rub them together while using soap and warm water. They say you do not have to use special antibacterial soap. Be sure to rub all areas of the hands for about ten to fifteen seconds. The rubbing action helps remove germs. Then rinse (冲洗) the hands with water and dry them.

Every person needs energy to go about the day and continue to function correctly. To get this energy, you eat, and your body changes the food into the nutrients and energy you need to survive. Your metabolism (新陈代谢) is directly related to how quickly and efficiently your body creates this energy, and if it takes too long, the food gets stored as fat. A slow metabolism will leave you with less energy and more weight than you probably desire.
Your basal metabolic rate (基础代谢率) is the amount of energy your body consumes while you're resting. When people say they have a slow metabolism, they mean they have a slow basal metabolic rate. Increasing this number is possible through exercise and muscle building.
According to Metabolism-Advice. com, as your age, your basal metabolic rate will lower as your body begins to deteriorate (衰退). At the age of 30, your body will stop producing the high levels of growth hormone it previously produces. Your body senses that it's done growing at 30, so it uses the resources elsewhere. Unfortunately, that means that your muscle will deteriorate more rapidly than before. While you can’t block age's effects or your metabolism, you can fight against it with regular exercise that builds muscle.
Although muscle deteriorates quicker with age, a lack of exercise will hurt your metabolism at any age. The muscle developed during exercise is vital to maintaining a healthy body with a normal basal metabolic rate. Therefore, while cardiovascular(心血管的)exercise will burn fat during the work out, building muscle will wisely allow your body to use more calories to give you healthy energy instead of stored fat.
Another large factor that determines your basal metabolic rate is your eating habits. Metabolism-Advice. com suggests eating small meals every two to three hours. This will make sure that your metabolism is constantly working throughout your day. Another large factor is how healthily you eat. Taking in the required calories for your amount of daily activity will help keep your metabolism from lowering, but taking in too many calories may lead to fat.
