Britain is set to face an increase in cold winters, with up to one-in-seven hitting the UK with longer periods of time when temperatures are below freezing, a study has suggested. The prediction was based on research that found out how low solar activity affected winter weather patterns.
However, the researchers were eager to stress that their findings did not suggest that the region was about to fall suddenly into a "little ice age".The findings appear in the journal Environmental Research Letters."We could get to the point where one-in-seven winters are very cold, as we had at the start of last winter and all through the winter before last," said co-author Mike Lockwood, professor of space environment physics at the University of Reading.
Using the Central England Temperature (CET) record, the world's longest instrumental data series that dates back to 1659, the team said that in general temperatures during recent winters had been obviously lower than the longer-term temperatures."The mean CET for December, January and February for the recent relatively cold winters of 2008 ~ 2009 and 2009~2010 were 3.50℃ and 2.53℃ respectively," they wrote. "However, the mean value for the previous 20 winters had been 5.04℃.The series of lower winter temperatures in the UK during the last three years had raised questions about the probability of more similar, or even colder, winters occurring in the future."
Last year.Professor Lockwood and colleagues published a paper that found a link between fewer sunspots and atmospheric conditions that "blocked" warm westerly winds reaching Europe during winter months, opening the way for cold easterly winds from the Arctic and Russia to sweep across the region.Professor Lockwood, while acknowledging that there were a range of possible meteorological factors (气象因素) that could influence blocking events, said the latest study moved things forward by showing that there was "improvement in the predictive skill" when solar activity was taken into consideration.
1.We can know from the second paragraph that _____.
A.research shows that Britain will soon fall into an ice age
B.Mike Lockwood's research focuses on space environment physics
C.it was quite cold in Britain over the entire winter last year
D.so far one-in-seven winters have been very cold in Britain
2.The.underlined word "mean" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to "_____".
A.average B.stable C.ungenerous D.changeable
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.It was sunspots that blocked warm westerly winds reaching Europe.
B.Meteorological factors hardly have any influence on blocking events.
C.The latest study done by Professor Lockwood was of little practical value.
D.Considering solar activity or not affects the accuracy of weather forecasting.
4.What's the best title of the passage?
A.Another big danger approaching the UK
B.Research finds out solar activity is to blame for the cold
C.UK faces more cold winters due to weaker solar activity
D.Changes in weather patterns should be responsible for low solar activity

Winter in the north is usually very cold and it is important to avoid colder-related injuries such as frostbite(冻伤) and hypothermia(体温降低).Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long.It mainly happens on the hands, feet, nose, and ears and some will bring permanent damage.Hypothermia is a serious medical condition caused by serious cold.It happens when the body cannot produce as much heat as it loses. If not treated,it can be deadly.
The best way to avoid cold-related injuries is to be prepared for the outdoors. Here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to staying warm.Think of COLD.
The C stands for cover.Wear a hat and scarf to keep heat from escaping through the head, neck, and ears. And wear mittens instead of gloves.Mittens are a type of glove that does not have separate parts for each finger.Gloves may not keep hands as warm because they separate the fingers.
The O stands for overexertion(过分用力).Avoid activities that will make you sweaty.Wet clothes and cold weather are a bad mix.
L is for layers.Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another, is better than single heavy layer clothing. Also, make sure outerwear is made of water resistant and tightly knit material.
The last letter D stands for dry.In other words, stay as dry as possible.Pay attention to the places where snow can enter, like the tops of boots.the necks of coats and the wrist areas of mittens.
And there are a couple of other things to keep in mind, one for children and the other for adults.Eating snow might be fun but it lowers the body's temperature. And drinking alcohol might make a person feel warm, but what it really does is weaken the body's ability to hold heat.
1.Both frostbite and hypothermia________.
A.are injuries caused by extreme cold
B.may happen on the hands, feet, nose and ears
C.may cause uncontrollable shaking and slow breathing
D.may be deadly injuries
2.Mittens can keep your hands warmer than gloves because ________ .
A.they are thicker B.they are made of better materials
C.they don't separate your fingers D.they separate your fingers
3.can help you avoid cold-related injuries.
A.Trying your best to exercise until you get sweat
B.Wearing layers of loose,lightweight clothes
C.Drinking alcohol to make you feel warm
D.Wearing a single heavy layer of clothing
4.Overexertion should be avoided because________.
A.it may exhaust you B.it may make you hungry
C.it may make you sweat D.it may lower your body temperature

Winter begins in the north on December 22nd. People and animals have been doing what they always do to prepare for the cold months. Squirrels, for example, have been busy gathering nuts from trees. Well, scientists have been busy gathering information about what the squirrels do with the food they collect.
They examined differences between red squirrels and gray squirrels in the American state of Indiana. The scientists wanted to know how these differences could affect the growth of black walnut trees. The black walnut is the nut of choice for both kinds of squirrels. The black walnut tree is also a central part of some hardwood forests.
Rob Swihart of Purdue University did the study with Jake Goheen, a former Purdue student now at the University of New Mexico. The two researchers estimate that several times as many walnuts grow when gathered by gray squirrels as compared to red squirrels. Gray squirrels and red squirrels do not store nuts and seeds in the same way. Gray squirrels bury nuts one at a time in a number of places. But they seldom remember where they buried every nut. So some nuts remain in the ground. Conditions are right for them to develop and grow in the following spring. Red squirrels, however, store large groups of nuts above ground. Professor Swihart calls “death traps for seeds”.
Gray squirrels are native to Indiana. But Professor Swihart says their numbers began to decrease as more forests were cut for agriculture. Red squirrels began to spread through the state during the past century.
The researchers say red squirrels are native to forests that stay green all year, unlike walnut trees. They say the cleaning of forest land for agriculture has helped red squirrels invade Indiana. Jake Goheen calls them a sign of an environmental problem more than a cause.
1.The study done by Rob Swihart and Jake Goheen is to ________.
A. find out the living conditions for squirrels
B. do something to get rid of squirrels
C. save the forests in the American state of Indiana
D. learn squirrels’ influence on black walnut trees
2. The difference between gray squirrels and red squirrels mainly lies in ________.
A. the way they store the walnuts
B. the way they gather the walnut
C. the number of the nuts they can collect
D. the fact that the gray squirrels have a bad memory
3. When Professor Swihart says “death traps for seeds”, he actually means that ________.
A. red squirrels eat more nuts than gray squirrels
B. nuts above the ground will not develop into plants
C. gray squirrels and red squirrels will have severe fights
D. seeds can be traps for other animals in the forest
4.According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Gray squirrels do more harm to the forest than red squirrels.
B. Red squirrels and gray squirrels have helped the spread of walnut trees.
C. Human beings should bear some responsibility for the decreasing number of gray squirrels.
D. The cleaning of forest land benefits gray squirrels directly.
