Going to college was not optional. In my family, it was just another step toward the American dream. As soon as I graduated. I enrolled in the English Department of Colorado State University. I went on to earn two scholarships, and membership in the National Honor Society. I truly believed the hard work was worth it.
It wasn't until a few months ago that I realized how clueless I was. I had been combing through the classifieds when my eyes fell upon my dream job: ''National College Magazine looking for writers''
Thrilled, I spent the weekend composing a resume. Needless to say. I was stunned when the interviewer barely took one glance before throwing it aside.
''No experience'', he said flatly.
I felt like screaming, "What do you mean, no experience? Look at these grades. ''
I was left to absorb the shock of rejection, thinking that nobody ever told me that a 4.0 student would be turned down for a job.
Didn't all of my hard work count for anything?
I see plenty of demands for two years of experience at a print publication, but none requiring extensive knowledge of how to write academic papers. Yet 95% of my energy in school went toward the latter, leaving me little time to devote to anything else. If career preparation is supposed to be the point of college, then why isn't it the focus?
Has a college degree just become another societal status symbol like fancy cars or designer clothes?
Given my experience. I feel that a college degree would be a lot more valuable if students were required to get some outside experience to supplement their in-class knowledge. Instead of requiring four science classes, why not three science classes and an internship? In my college career. I took one class that taught me how to write and submit essays for publication. This ever so brief taste of the real world was like holding an ice cream sundae in front of a child and only giving her a small bite.

I always had the preference to take on more than I should when I was young. At times, I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle it. At other times, my purpose was to please someone and gain recognition for my efforts. Sometimes this led to stress or frustration.
When I was an IT manager after college graduation I was assigned to work with a wealthy customer and be a go-between (中间人)for my company. I took on the assignment happily, thinking that this might be my time to shine. However, the customer’s demands proved to be more than I could do with. And the company chose to stand by the customer and try to meet his unreasonable requirements rather than stick to what we had originally offered in the contract. As you can imagine, this led to a lot of unexpected problems and arguing with some of the staff who refused to do anything outside their scope (范围) of work. I remember walking into my office one morning, opening my laptop and staring at the blank screen for long, thinking to myself: What should I do? That was a difficult time in my life and then I finally had to give up my first job and left that company sadly.
Perhaps, I thought then, I could find the job that didn’t involve dealing with difficult people and difficult situations. But later I realized: Is this possible in our modern world? No, it is impossible. Now, I know, I shouldn’t run away from the challenges I faced in life: I had to learn how to deal with them. I regret not persevering ( 坚 持 ) in my job. We should train ourselves to look at things from a positive point of view, because that is far better than being trapped in the bad circle depression. I’ve come to see that when faced with difficulties, I should not give up, but persevere.
1.Why did the author take the work assigned to him happily?
A.He wanted to please the boss.
B.The work was very easy for him to do.
C.He failed to find a job many times before.
D.He thought it was time to prove his ability.
2.What does the underlined word “this” in the second paragraph mean?
A.Arguing with some of the staff.
B.Meeting the customer’s unreasonable requirements.
C.Accepting the assignment without hesitation.
D.Sticking to what had been originally offered in the contract.
3.What made the author leave his first job?
A.The depressing job situation. B.The low payment.
C.His lack of ability. D.A better job waiting for him.
4.What’s the best title of the text?
A.Running away from challenges. B.Persevering instead of giving up.
C.Refusing to argue with customers. D.Leaning to take on more than one can.

I decided to go back to school in the fall of 2008 after not being happy with my current job and financial status. I obtained my Associate’s Degree in May 2002 in Commercial Arts. After graduation, I had trouble obtaining a job in that field. For years, I was going from one job to another feeling unfilled, and I was not satisfied with the instability.
I decided to go back to school for either International Business or Psychology. I weighed the pros and cons of both professions and Psychology won. I like helping my friends and family, when they go through hard situations in their life by giving them sound advice and being honest with them. Also, I was interested in “the mind”.
I was searching for online schools because my work schedule at my current job would not allow me to attend a regular class. I was nervous about starting online classes because I heard mixed stories from other friends who were taking online classes. I decided to do it anyway to experience something different. I wanted to find an online school that was affordable and reputable. Through my search, I discovered Walden University, which is specially for working adults who want to obtain a bachelor’s degree or higher. The process of getting accepted was easy, which included writing an essay on why I wanted to attend their school, transferring my previous credits, etc.
I am currently enrolled in the Bachelors program for psychology, and I am paying for college via financial-aid loans and grants. This experience has been interesting yet trying as sometimes it was difficult to balance work, school and home life. I learned a lot about psychology and myself. For example, I like writing about current events, relationships and traveling. I thought my English composition was ordinary, but after taking a few classes at Walden University, I improved my English composition and it made me feel confident enough to start writing professionally so I became a freelance (自由撰稿) writer. Currently, I am only three classes away from obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology! It was one of the best decisions I made in my life.

Flying High
Barrington Irving made his historic flight and founded an educational non-profit-making organization. The secret, he believes, is having a dream in the first place, and that starts with learning experiences that inspire kids to build careers.
The moment of inspiration for Irving came in his parents’ bookstore. One customer, a professional pilot, asked Irving if he’d thought about becoming a pilot. “I told him I wasn’t smart enough; but the next day he took me to the cockpit (驾驶舱) of the commercial airplane he flew, and just like that I was hooked.”
To follow his dream, Irving turned down a football scholarship to the University of Florida. He washed airplanes to earn money and increased his flying skills by practising at home on a $40 flight simulator (模拟) video game. Then another dream took hold: flying alone around the world. He faced more than 50 rejections for sponsorship before convincing some companies to donate aircraft components. He took off with no weather radar, no de-icing system, and just $30 in his pocket.
After 97 days, 26 stops and dozens of thunderstorms, he touched down to a cheering crowd in Miami. “It was seeing so many young people watching and listening that pushed me into giving back with my knowledge and experience.” Irving has been doing it ever since. He set up his non-profit-making organization, Experience Aviation (航空), aiming to increase the numbers of youth in aviation and science-related careers. “We want to create chances for students to accomplish something amazing,” he notes. The most powerful educational tool is the example his own life provides.

A.Meeting people who provide unexpected help.
B.Getting a chance to study technical knowledge.

2.What Irving replied to the pilot in the bookstore suggested that ______.
A.he felt embarrassed to refuse the offer B.he was doubtful about his own abilities
C.he knew his efforts would be rewarded D.he realized immediately how lucky he was
3.What can we learn about Irving in Paragraph 3?
A.He chose to reduce his budget as low as possible.
B.He was finally given enough money to keep going.
C.He got the most useful flying tips from his video game.
D.He took on a further challenge after he knew how to fly.
4.Why does Irving set up his non-profit-making organization?
A.Because he hoped to become a public figure.
B.Because he expected to start a business in other fields.
C.Because he saw there was great interest in what he was doing.
D.Because he thought he could teach more than flight schools could.
