We bought a second-hand house, and that afternoon I was in the workshop of the gqrage,I noticed a part of a carpet sticking out of the ceiling of an attic(阁楼)that was strange, I found a ladder and headed up.
I climbed into the attic, As my eyes adjusted to the dark , I saw a metal container, I opened the lid and was shocked by what I saw: several rolls of money tied up in orange string , I’ve found , like $800, Awesome!
But there was more than one box of money , I found another seven boxes full to the top, plus two big black bags full of cash, I won’t lie , My first thought was that this was a bleesing from God –the means to fix up this old house; or just to uxe to make life easier for our rwo young sons , who sere seven and four ,But I knew that the right thing was to return the money to the previous owners . I thought about the hundreds of times he had bone to his shop, cut off a length of orange string ,and bound up a roll of money , I like to think he did it for his chileren .
There were balls of that ouange stuing still hanging on the wall of the workshop when we moved in ,I used them to tie up Christmas presents last year, for my kids , I hope it reminded them of the gift greater than money that my wife and I gave them by returning the money ,We did the right thing ,and our children will never forget that.

In the dull twilight of the winter afternoon,Scarlett came to the end of the long road which had begun the night Atlanta fell. She had set her feet upon that road as a spoiled, selfish and untried girl, full of youth, warm of emotion, easily confused by life. Now,at the end of the road, there was nothing left of that girl.Hunger and hard labor, fear and constant pressure, the terrors of war and the terrors of Reconstruction had taken away all warmth and youth and softness.Around the core of her being,a shell of hardness had formed and, little by little, layer by layer, the shell had thickened during the endless months.
But until this very day,two hopes had been left to support her.She had hoped that the war being over, life would gradually return to its old face. She had hoped that Ashley's return would bring back some meaning into life. Now both hopes were gone. She realized that for her,for the whale South, the war would never end.The bitterest fighting, the most violent and cruel revenges, were just beginning. And Ashley was imprisoned forever by words which were stronger than any jail.
Peace had failed her and Ashley had failed her, both in the same day,and it was as if the last crevice(裂口)in the shell had been closed, the final layer hardened. She had become what Grandma Fontaine had counseled against,a woman who had seen the worst and so had nothing else to fear. Not life nor Mother nor loss of love nor public opinion.Only hunger and her nightmare dream of hunger could make her afraid.
A curious sense of lightness,of freedom, went through her now that she had finally hardened her heart against everything that tied her to the old days and the old Scarlett. She had made her decision and, thank God,she wasn't afraid. She had nothing to lose and her mind was made up.

When the one-year anniversary of my mother’s passing came around, I found myself in the kitchen preparing some of her favorite dishes.
As I poured myself into cooking, some of the deep sadness I was experiencing at this one-year mark moved through me. I loved my mom's turkey soup. I remembered the time she made some especially for me. It was summer then and I had a terrible head cold. She arrived unexpectedly one afternoon at my work place with a huge jar of her turkey noodle soup. At the thought, I began to feel a little more relieved in the pain of losing her.
It was then that I realized I was reconnecting with my mother through food. I laughed a bit at myself when I reflected on all the dishes I had cooked that week. Without knowing it, I had created a beautiful ceremony to honor my mother and to comfort myself at this vulnerable(脆弱的) time. I suddenly felt my mother at hand and was filled with her presence. I was so uplifted and excited that I began talking to her, imagining she was there.
“What else should we make?” I asked of us both, wanting to keep the ceremony from ending.
“Irish Potato Pancakes,” was the reply.
I hesitated. The thought of these brought up another loss. The last time I made potato pancakes was two and a half years ago. I had taken off my engagement (订婚) ring and never found it again. Since then, I resisted using that recipe even though I really liked those pancakes as if it were partly to blame.
My mom should know better than to suggest these, I thought. She knew how upset I was about losing my ring. But despite these hesitations, I found myself caught up in the joy and celebration of the moment, and I reached for the cookbook without another thought of the ring. My mom did love Irish things. I opened the cookbook and turned to the pancake recipe. At once, something at the bottom of the page caught my eye... It was shining! Amazingly, there, pressed into the pages of this book, was my diamond ring!
That day, I made potato pancakes in the shape of hearts.
