One of India’s longest and strongest heat waves in decades, with temperatures reaching 123°F (51° C) has killed at least 36 lives since it began in May, and the government has warned that the suffering might continue as the arrival of monsoon (季风) rains has been delayed.
India’s heat waves have grown particularly strong in the past decade, killing thousands of people and affecting an increasing number of states. This year, the extreme temperatures have struck large parts of northern and central India.
Anup Kumar Srivastava, an expert at India’s National Disaster Management Authority, said the number of Indian states hit by heat waves was expected to grow to 23 this year from 9 in 2015. He said, “This year, the number of heat wave days has also increased — and it’s not just day temperatures, night temperatures have also been high.” He added that the coming storms would bring down temperatures in some areas, but that heat waves might pick up again until the monsoon rains arrive.
India’s Meteorological Department warns that extreme heat brings a very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages. Medical authorities have canceled leaves for doctors at hospitals in Churu as the number of patients has soared. Schools in central India have remained closed.
In the capital, New Delhi, temperatures reached a record 118.4°F (45°C) on Monday, June 10. Clouds on Tuesday promised rain, but largely failed to deliver. Dust storms the next day lowered temperatures to around 100 °F (38°C).
Heat records around the world are more likely to be broken as average temperatures climb upward because of rising greenhouse gas emissions.
1.Why might India’s heat waves continue according to the government?
A.Because clouds have failed to gather.
B.Because there are fewer dust storms.
C.Because temperatures stay high day and night.
D.Because monsoon rains have come later than usual.

Unemployment in Europe has recently hit record highs. Although Denmark has been protected from economic problems thanks to its low public debt, qualified (有资格的) professionals are still finding it tough to get a job. Danish marketing firm Reputation Copenhagen has come up with a way of helping academics get noticed -- putting them on display (展示) in storefront windows.
Many highly-trained professionals, ranging from former CEOs to lawyers and tax experts, are currently finding it increasingly difficult to find proper employment on the Danish job market. Some of them have been trying for years, leaving their resumes (简历) with dozens of companies, without ever hearing back from them, and are now at a point where they are willing to try anything, even putting themselves in display windows like goods, hoping to get noticed.
Alexander Peitersen, managing director of Reputation Copenhagen, came up with the idea of using his company's office as a storefront for the campaign (活动), as there are many businesses nearby that might be interested in the talents on display. So he set up a small desk, put up the “an available academic is sitting here” sign and asked the unemployed to just sit in the windows like goods. It seems like a pretty desperate measure, but at least it works. According to the agency's website, three of the jobseekers in their window display got a job in a day or two.
Peitersen says he came up with the idea after realizing human resource managers get hundreds of job applications every day, which look more or less the same, and that creative thinking is required in order to increase the chances of finding employment. Apart from companies interested in qualified job-seekers, the campaign has also attracted the attention of both local and international media.
1.Which of the following words can be used to describe Peitersen?
A. Independent. B. Creative. C. Sensitive. D. Cautious.
2.Some job-seekers are willing to put themselves in the windows to display in that ______.
A. they think it is fashionable
B. their parents ask them to
C. it’s increasingly difficult to get hired
D. they find it’s interesting
3.It can be Inferred that ______.
A. no companies show interest in the qualified job-seekers in the windows
B. both local and international media don't agree with the campaign
C. human resource managers have to reply to hundreds of applicants
D. to some degree the window displays help people find jobs
4.What is the text mainly about?
A. Job-seekers are displayed in the windows hoping to get hired.
B. The rate of unemployment in Europe has recently become hitter.
C. It is hard for qualified professionals to get a job.
D. Denmark has avoided economic problems due to its low public debt.

A new app aims to help parents interpret what their babies want based on the sound of their cry. The free app ChatterBaby, which was released last month, analyzes the features of a baby's cry, to help parents understand whether their children might be hungry, fussy (大惊小怪) or in pain. While critics say caregivers should not rely too much on their smartphones, others say it's a helpful tool for new or tired parents.
Ariana Anderson, a mother of four, developed the app. She originally designed the technology to help deaf parents better understand why their babies were upset, but soon realized it could be a helpful tool for all new parents.
To build a database, Anderson and her team uploaded 2,000 audio samples of baby cries. She used cries recorded during ear piercings and vaccinations (接种) to distinguish pain cries. And to create a baseline for the other two categories, a group of moms had to agree on whether the cry was hungry or fussy.
Anderson's team continues to collect data and hopes to make the app more accurate by asking parents to get specific about what certain sounds mean.
Pediatrician Eric Ball pointed out that evaluating cries can never be an exact science. ''I think that all of the apps and technology that new parents are using now can be helpful but need to be taken seriously, '' Ball said. ''I do worry, that some parents will get stuck in big data and turn their parenting into basically a spreadsheet (电子表格) which I think will take away the love and caring that parents are supposed to be providing for their children.''
But Anderson says the aim of the app is to have parents interpret the results, not to provide a yes or no answer. The Bells say it's a win-win. They believe they are not only helping their babies now but potentially others in the future.
1.How does the app judge what babies want?
A.By collecting data.
B.By recording all the sounds.
C.By analyzing the sound of their crying.
D.By asking parents about specific messages.
2.Who was the app designed for in the beginning?
A.Deaf parents. B.All new parents.
C.Ariana Anderson. D.Babies often crying.
3.What can we know according to Ball?
A.Parents should use the app wisely.
B.The app can provide an accurate result.
C.Parents and babies are addicted to the app.
D.The app makes babies love their parents.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.App Knows Why Babies Cry B.App Prevents Babies Crying
C.Parents Build Babies' Database D.Parents Overrely on Smartphones
