If you were a pilot flying a plane, and suddenly the engine failed, would you eject(跳出), or stay in? For a pilot, the choice is very difficult. If he ejects, he is safe, but the plane crashes. If he stays in the plane, he risks his life.
Recently, Chinese Air Force pilot Li Feng, 38, faced this choice during a training exercise. It was March 7 and he was flying a Jian-10 (Fighter-10) at 4,500 meters. A warning appeared on the plane’s computer screen. He realized the plane might fail at any moment.
Li Feng did a quick check of the engine and asked the base if he could return. When the fighter was 7 km away from the airport, however, the engine stopped working. The plane began to fall at a speed of 25 meters a second at an altitude of 1,160 meters.
Under Air Force rules, fighter pilots may eject if their aircraft loses engine power below 2,000 meters and can't be restarted. Before Li lost contact with the control tower, the commander in the air base asked him to eject. But Li Feng insisted on having another try.
“I knew where the deadline (to give up the aircraft) was and was prepared for the ejection, but I decided not to give up unless the fighter was totally out of control,” Li recalled during a recent television interview.
After 104 seconds, Li was able to bring the fighter to a safe landing. The plane only suffered slight damage.
“You are a hero! Congratulations!” Li's teacher, Xu Yongling wrote in a text message to him after the landing. He said Li was a cool-headed pilot and very professional.
Li's brave and calm act not only saved the 200 million yuan aircraft but also gave him invaluable first-hand experience of dealing with an engine emergency.
For his outstanding performance, the Air Force recently awarded him a gold medal.

高三英语单项填空简单题查看答案及解析
If you’ll be taking vacation time in the coming year and plan on flying, here are some shopping tips for you. Those who fly first class and don’t care what airline tickets cost are excused from this lesson.
When to buy
If you are shopping for domestic (国内的) flights, check prices on Tuesday afternoons. This is an old tip but still useful because most US carriers continue to release sales on Tuesday morning, and competitors quickly drop their fares to match the better deals.
When to fly
Weekdays continue to be generally cheaper times to fly than weekends for most flights. In the US, the cheapest days are typically Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. A good itinerary (Ðг̱í) for the expensive US spring break travel period is Tuesday to Saturday; it will save you money over weekend-to-weekend travel.
Where to fly
We continue to see good deals to Boston and Denver and more and more nice prices to Chicago, Seattle and Washington, D.C. As for Europe, there have been surprising deals throughout the fall and those will continue into the winter.
Direct vs. connecting flights
Compare the price of direct with connecting flights. Sometimes adding a stop to your route will save you money. An example: an Francisco to Raleigh/Durham: $553 direct, $362 one-stop.
You’d better think twice about the direct flight for San Francisco to Raleigh.
Compare, compare, compare
Stifle the impulse to go to your favorite airline site to purchase tickets without doing any comparison. Example: Let’s say you want to fly from New York to London and figure your favorite US legacy carrier will get you there for the best price. Airline price: $554 round-trip.
However, the comparison site also showed a cheaper flight from the same legacy carrier ($521). See what you’re missing when you fail to compare?
1.When can you possibly find the best price for flights within the US?
A.On Monday morning. B.On Tuesday morning.
C.On Tuesday afternoon. D.On Sunday morning.
2.What does the underlined phrase “stifle the impulse” in the last but one paragraph mean?
A.Feel free to do something. B.Hold off on doing something.
C.Get well prepared for something. D.Make quick decision on something.
3.Who is the text intended for?
A.Those who usually choose first class for their flights.
B.Those who want to find suggestions on where to fly.
C.Those who are traveling during the spring break.
D.Those who are looking for the best airline ticket prices.

If you’ll be taking vacation time in the coming year and plan on flying, here are some shopping tips to give your undivided attention to.
When to buy
If you’re shopping for domestic flights, check prices on Tuesday afternoons. This is an old tip but still valid because most U. S. carriers continue to release sales on Tuesday morning, and competitors quickly drop their fares to match the better deals.
When to fly
Weekdays continue to be generally cheaper times to fly than weekends for most flights. In the U.S. specifically, the cheapest days are typically Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. A good itinerary (旅行计划)for the expensive U.S. spring break travel period is Tuesday to Saturday; it won’t be cheap exactly, but it will save you money (in most cases) over weekend-to- weekend travel.
Direct vs. connecting flights
Compare the price of direct with connecting fights. Sometimes adding a stop to your route will save you money, and it might be enough to endure the extra-long flying day. Some examples:
Boston to Seattle: $247 direct, $234 one-stop
San Francisco to Raleigh/Durham: $553 direct, $362 one-stop
Okay, the savings on Boston-Seattle might not be worth it to you, but I’ll bet you’ll think twice about the direct flight for San Francisco to Raleigh.
Compare, compare, compare
Stifle the impulse to go to your favorite airline site to purchase tickets without doing any comparison; it’s a disaster. Example: Let's say you want to fly from New York to London and figuring your favorite U.S. legacy carrier will get you there for the best price.
Airline price: $554 round-trip
Comparison price: $486
Obviously, the legacy carrier did not have the cheapest flight, but wait, there’s more: The comparison site also showed a cheaper flight from the same legacy carrier ($521 ). See what you’re missing when you fail to compare?
1.When could the best price for flights within the U.S. most possibly be found?
A. Monday morning. B. Tuesday afternoon.
C. Thursday morning. D. Sunday morning.
2.What are ticket buyers advised to do?
A. Choose direct flights rather than connecting ones.
B. Take the cheapest deal from their favorite airline.
C. Look for flights to Europe throughout the summer.
D. Avoid weekend-to-weekend flights in holiday seasons.
3.What does the underlined phrase “Stifle the impulse” probably mean?
A. Put off doing something. B. Feel free to do something.
C. Get well prepared for something. D. Force someone to do things he dislikes.

Flying is fine if you want to save time, but nothing beats the railway for a relaxing and down-to-earth journey. The Zhengzhou---Xuzhou and Xi’an---Fuzhou high-speed railways put into operation in September mark a connection of high-speed railways in China’s eastern and middle-western regions, and they have brought out some of the country’s best landscapes and cuisines.
Here are four signature dishes(招牌菜) that you shouldn’t miss as you travel along the railways.
Yangrou Paomo, Xi’an
If one dish could represent Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi, locals would tell you without doubt that it’s Yangrou Paomo. It is a bowl of lamb soup served with hard flour “bread”, which is broken up and added to the soup. The soup is topped with slices of mutton, scallion(葱) and coriander(香菜). Then it is usually eaten with picked sweet garlic.
Soup Dumpling, Kaifeng
A popular snack in Kaifeng, Henan, the dish is made up of three things: skin, meat and soup. The skin is made from flour, while the filling is usually pork. And just as its name suggests, the soup dumplings are filled with tasty soup. But how does the steaming hot soup get into the dumplings? It’s actually been cooled and cut into cubes, which fit easily into the dough(面团). Along with the pork, the cubes become liquid soup once they’re steamed.
Smelly Mandarin Fish, Huangshan
Despite its name, Smelly Mandarin Fish(臭鳜鱼) is known for its good taste. A lot of travelers who visit Huangshan in Anhui want to taste it because they have heard of its reputation. Once the skin has been removed, the fresh is preserved in salty water for six to seven days, then fried and cooked in soy sauce. Although salting gives the fish its special smell, the original tender flesh is preserved well and given a delicious and unique taste.
Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, Fuzhou
The dish has enjoyed an over 100-year-long worldwide reputation since it was invented in Fuzhou, Fujian in the late Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). Fotiaoqiang, or Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, got its interesting name from a poem a customer wrote. The poem said the dish was so delicious that upon smelling it, monks in the neighboring temple would jump over the wall to come and get some. Buddha Jumps Over the Wall is made up of many ingredients, including sea cucumber(海参), chicken, pork and mushroom. Because of these ingredients, it tastes extremely delicious while being highly nutritious at the same time.
