Researchers have developed new software using smart phones’GPS and imaging abilities that determine the exact location of distant objects as well as monitor the speed and direction of moving objects. The software could eventually allow smart phone-armed soldiers to target the location of their enemies. On the home front, the software could be used by everyone, including golfers judging distance to the green and biologists documenting the location of a rare animal without disturbing it.
“The great advantage of a Smartphone is that it provides so many tools in a single, readily available, relatively inexpensive package,”said Qia Wang,a doctoral student who led the development of the software.“For example,on the battlefield,a soldier needs a rangefinder, compass,GPS and other tools to get information before calling in an air strike. With our software, the soldier can have all those instruments in one device that can be purchased off the shelf. When that soldier returns from War,she can use the same Software to protect her family by clocking a speeder near her children’s school and catching the criminal on video.”
Wang and his colleagues developed their software to locate and track:
Targets of known size—when the size of the target is known.a single image is enough to pinpoint the target’s location.
Targets of unknown size—If the exact size of a target is unknown, the software uses two images to triangulate the location of the target·
Moving targets—By taking a short video of a moving target, the smartphone software can calculate how fast the target is moving and in what direction it is going.
“Currently, our software is limited by the physical abilities of smartphone hardware, but the devices are improving rapidly,”Wang said.“We expect that improvements in GPS accuracy, battery life and camera resolution will allow our software to make even more accurate observations.”
1..From Paragraph 1 we can know that the new software can_______.
A.determine the speed of moving objects
B.1ocate objects in the distance exactly
C.defend soldiers against their enemies
D.help biologists protect rare animal
2..The example given by Qia Wang is meant to ________________.
A.make an advertisement
B.describe the software briefly
C.show the benefits of the software

Microsoft has developed a new smart phone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert(改变) them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To mitigate the drawbacks…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids(方格) of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm(程序) is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
1.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. ignore B. destroy
C. increase D. reduce
2.The passage mainly tells us ________ .
A. The advantages of Gaze Speak over the Current eye-tracking input systems.

Chinese researchers have developed a robot designed to help doctors treat the new coronavirus (新冠病毒) and other highly contagious diseases.
The robot can perform some of the same medical examination tasks as doctors. For example, the device can perform ultrasounds, collect fluid samples from a person's mouth and listen to sounds made by a patient’s organs. Cameras record the robot’s activities, which are controlled remotely so doctors can avoid coming in close contact with infected patients. Doctors and other medical workers can operate the machine from a nearby room, or from much farther away.
The robot's main designer is Zheng Gangtie, an engineer and professor at China’s Tsinghua University in Beijing. “Doctors are all very brave,” Zheng said. “But this virus is just too contagious…We can use robots to perform the most dangerous tasks.” Zheng said a friend of his, the head of Beijing’s Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, told him that one of the biggest problems in dealing with COVID-19 was that health care workers treating patients were getting infected themselves. Zheng said he wanted to do something to help this situation. So the engineer gathered a team and went to work on the robotic device. Zheng said the team was able to convert two robotic arms. The devices use the same technology that is used for space equipment, including moon explorers. The new robot is almost completely automated, Zheng said. It can even disinfect itself after performing actions involving patient contact. However, Zheng said he had heard from some doctors that it would be better not to build such robots to be fully automatic. This is because many patients still desire a personal presence to help calm them during treatment.
The team currently has two robots and both have been tested by doctors at hospitals in Beijing. One machine was taken to Wuhan’s Union Hospital, where doctors were being trained to use it. The plan is to use the robot to help treat coronavirus patients, along with assistance from nurses and other hospital workers.
Zheng would like to build more of the robots, but said money from the university has run out. About $72,000 has been spent on each robot. He said he does not plan to commercialize the design, but hopes that a company can begin that process.
1.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.The robot can record doctors’ activities.
B.The robot can carry out actions automatically.
C.The robot can assist doctors to examine patients.
D.The robot can collect samples of patients’ organs.
2.The underlined word “disinfect” in Paragraph 3 is the closest in meaning to
A.affect B.clean
C.update D.fix
3.What can we infer about the robot according to Zheng Gangtie?
A.It is very costly to make.
B.It is highly recognized by doctors.
C.It can be purchased in the market soon.
D.It can also be used in moon exploration.
4.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To introduce a new type of medical robot.
B.To provide guidance on treating COVID-19.
C.To describe the current condition of COVID-19.
D.To promote the commercialization of a new robot.

Researchers at Oxford University say they have developed a new method that could predict heart attacks years before they happen. They use mathematical algorithms(演算法)to examine CT images of a patient's heart. One report on their study has been published in the medical journal The Lancet.
Most heart attacks result from a build-up of fatty tissue inside arteries(动脉)that carry blood from the heart to other areas of the body. Too much buildup can block this flow of blood and cause a heart attack. Currently, doctors use CT scans to learn when a sticky substance called plaque has already built up inside an artery. The new technology is designed to predict which arteries are at risk for future buildup. How much fat is present around heart arteries also can be measured. That fat changes when an artery becomes inflamed(发炎), serving as an early warning system for heart attacks.
Charalambos Antoniades, a professor of cardiovascula(心血管)medicine at Oxford University, believes the research shows this method could be very effective in getting patients to take early steps to prevent future problems.
“Say your arteries are inflamed and a narrowing will be developed five years down the line. So maybe you can start preventive measures to avoid this formation of plaques,” he said. “If you are able to identify inflammation in the arteries of the heart, then you can say which arteries will cause heart attacks.”
Antoniades added that researchers had yet to estimate exactly how many heart attacks could be prevented. But he said he believes the technique could help identify between 20 to 30 percent of people at risk of having one.
He added that the new technology will make such predictions easier because it works together with existing CT technology.
1.You can identify which arteries will cause heart attacks by .
A. locating where the inflamed arteries are
B. seeing a cardiovascular doctor
C. developing a new method to predict it
D. measuring how much fat is built up
2.This passage is probably from a .
A. medical textbook B. travel brochure
C. graduation paper D. science journal
3.What‟s Artoniades‟ attitude towards the new method?
A. Tolerant. B. Defensive. C. Critical. D. Favorable.

By analyzing the movement of the smile across a person’s face, the software developed by researchers at the University of Bradford can determine whether or not the expression is true. The most significant movements detected by the software were around the eyes, supporting popular theories that a true smile is one that can be seen in a person’s eyes.
“A smile is perhaps the most common of facial expressions and is a powerful way of signaling positive emotions (情绪)” says Hassan Ugail, Professor of Visual Computing at the University of Bradford, who led the research. “Techniques for analyzing human facial expressions have advanced a lot in recent years but distinguishing between true and false smiles remains a challenge because humans are not good at picking up the relevant messages.”
The software works by first mapping a person's face from within a video recording, and identifying the mouth, cheeks and eyes of the subject. It then measures how they move through the progress of the smile and calculates the differences in movement between the video pieces showing true and false smiles. They found significant differences in the way the subjects' mouths and cheeks moved when comparing the true and the false expressions. The movements around the subjects’ eyes, however, showed the most striking difference, with true smiles producing at least 10 percent more movement in these muscles (肌肉).
“We use two main sets of muscles when we smile — the zygomaticus major, which is responsible for the movements upwards of the mouth and the orbicularis oculi which causes movements around our eyes,” explains Professor Ugail. In false smiles it is often only the mouth muscles that move but, as humans we often don’t spot the lack of movement around the eyes.
He adds, “An objective way of analyzing whether or not a smile is true could help us develop improved interactions (互动) between computers and humans. It could also be important to scientists aiming to gain more understanding into human behavior and emotion.”
1.Why is it hard for humans to recognize a false smile?
A.Humans are good at hiding their smiles.
B.The relevant details are hard to catch for our eyes.
C.Humans often put on too many facial expressions.
D.Techniques for analyzing facial expressions are hard to develop.
2.What do the researchers find by the software?
A.People usually use two main sets of muscles when smiling.
B.True smiles produce more muscle movement around eyes.
C.Mouths and cheeks move the same for true and false smiles.
D.True smiles are a powerful way of signaling positive emotions.
3.What can we infer from Professor Hassan Ugail?
A.There are different sets of muscles on every human’s face.
B.The software can improve humans’ behavior and emotion.
C.Humans can spot the movement around the eyes in true smiles.
D.The interactions between computers and humans remain to be improved.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Eyes Can Smile
B.Smiles Can Show One's Personality
C.More Smiles, Longer lives
D.True Smiles, False Movements
