Anger itself is neither good nor bad. It’s what we do when we’re angry that matters. Anger is a tool that helps us to read and respond to the social situations that bother us. But how can we keep it under control?
It’s normal to think that getting angry is bad and many times we punish ourselves for doing so. But contrary to popular belief, research indicates that anger increases optimism, creativity and efficiency (效率). In addition, studies suggest that anger can lead to more successful negotiations at work, as well as in our personal lives.
In fact, suppressing (抑制) anger can be very bad for your health. In this sense, Dr. Ernest Harburg performed a study by monitoring a group of adults and their capacity (最大容量) for anger. What he found is that the men and women who suppressed their anger as a response to an unfair attack had a higher risk of developing bronchitis (支气管炎) or suffering from heart attacks, and were more likely to die before their colleagues who let their anger surface (显现) when they felt bothered.
When anger arises, we feel the need to either prevent or put an end to this powerful feeling for the benefit of our welfare or the welfare of those we care about. But this act of kindness, mercy, love or justice isn’t beneficial in this way. However, it’s certainly a good thing to be cautious when anger begins to surface. Expressing your anger can be appropriate with certain people at certain times. The question lies in how to do it without losing control. The key to expressing your anger is finding the appropriate tone for expressing what it is that upsets you. But to avoid unnecessary shouting, hitting, or other violent reactions, it’s worth taking a moment to step back and think, even though we may be in the middle of an argument with someone.
1.What do people generally think of anger?
A. It is an important tool. B. It is a bad feeling state.
C. It increases our happiness. D. It helps in social situations.
2.What does Dr. Ernest Harburg’s study imply about anger?
A. It needs a way out. B. It should be avoided.
C. It can cause sudden death. D. It must be kept under control.
3.What does the author suggest we do when we’re angry?
A. Find out its cause. B. Pretend to ignore it.
C. React to it violently. D. Express it reasonably.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Control Anger B. Benefits of Mild Anger
C. Showing Anger Fitly Counts D. Anger Does Affect Health

What should we do when we are in a bad situation? Some may choose to give up. But is that what we should do? The following news report may get you encouraged.
With a population of 156 million, Bangladesh has one of the largest populations in the world. What makes the situation worse is that most of the country is situated on the low-lying Ganges delta(三角洲). As a result, it often suffers flooding, especially during the rainy season from July to October. In this period, the rivers rise as much as 12 feet. In such situations, people can only get to certain places by boat.
The problems are particularly serious in the Chalanbeel region, a poor area where people survive by farming on the rich delta soil when it is not underwater. But many parents there don’t want to send their children to school and there are not enough teachers. As a result, many kids living there do not attend school on a regular basis. The problem becomes worse during the rainy season when land schools cannot be reached. Many students never return to school after the forced breaks.
How to help students attend school regularly? 22-year-old Bangladeshi architect Mohammed Rezwan decided to take action. In 2002, the young man used $500 he had received in scholarships to start Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha. The non-profit organization’s mission was to set up floating schools. It took Rezwan four years to raise enough funds to open his first boat school. But as the world began to know about the organization’s worthy cause, money started to pour in. Until now, Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha has built 22 floating schools, some with playgrounds on the upper deck. Now a lot more children in the Chalanbeel region go to school regularly.
We should keep in mind that there is always a solution to every problem.

When you meet someone for the first time, do you put across a good impression? And what do we mean by “good” in the context? According to Presence, a new book by Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy, people assess you on two main criteria when they first meet you:1. Can I trust this person? 2. Can I respect this person?
Your level of trustworthiness, or warmth, is the most important factor in how people initially admire you, Cuddy says—yet many mistakenly believe that the second factor, characterized as competence, is more important. “From an evolutionary aspect,” Cuddy writes, “it is more important to our survival to know whether a person deserves our trust.”
While displaying competence is certainly beneficial, particularly in a work setting, Cuddy warns that focusing on winning people’s respect, while failing to win their trust, can backfire—a common problem for young professionals attempting to make a good impression early on in their careers.
“If someone you’re trying to influence doesn’t trust you, you’re not going to get very far”, Cuddy says, “A warm, trustworthy person who is also strong elicits(博得) admiration, but only after you’ve established trust does your strength become a gift rather than a threat.”
In Cuddy’s book she also explains some of the science that can help you spot a liar.
When a person is lying there is likely to be differences between what they are saying and what they are doing,
“Lying is hard work,” she writes, “We’re telling one story while suppressing(压制)another, and most of us are experiencing psychological guilt about doing this, which we’re also try ring suppress. We just don’t have the brainpower to manage it all without letting something go—without ‘leaking’.”
“It’s about how well or poorly our multiple channels of communications—facial expressions, posture, movement, vocal qualities, speech-co-operate,” she adds.
“When we’re consciously looking for signs of cheat or truth, we pay too much attention to words and not enough to the external body language,” the professor adds. “Truth reveals itself more clearly through actions than it does through our words.”
1.According to Amy Cuddy, which is most significant in putting across a good impression?
A. Level of knowledge.
B. Level of reliability.
C. Level of competence.
D. Level of flexibility.
2.What is the meaning of the underlined word “backfire” in the passage?
A. Cause something unpleasant to happen.
B. Add more fuel to make a bigger fire.
C. Have an unexpected and undesired effect.
D. Walk backwards and make a fire.
3.Which of the following is NOT true of Professor Cuddy’s concepts?
A. Trust is more important than respect to win a good impression in meeting people for the first time.
B. Young people tend to win people’s respect instead of winning people’s trust early in their careers.
C. How far away a person goes depends on whether he or she establishes trust among people around.
D. Liars are unlikely to be identified in that their words match their actions well.
4.What can be learned according to the passage?
A. Some people tend to think displaying competence to gain respect makes a good impression.
B. A liar always experiences a feeling of guilt when a lie is leaked.
C. When multiple channels of communication co-operate poorly, a liar can hardly be spotted.
D. Words and actions are equally significant in deciding whether a person is trustworthy.
