With a rise in the number of allergies and worries over exposure to chemicals, more people are looking for alternative ways to clean their homes. To this end, some people are turning to the use of garbage enzyme (酶)--a concentrated liquid produced from fruit and vegetable waste. Garbage enzyme can be easily produced in the home, and has many uses, including as a cleansing agent, insect killer and even shampoo.
At the same time, it is hoped that the production and use of garbage enzyme will help reduce household waste and encourage people to take the initiative in sorting their trash.
The concept of using home-produced enzymes entered China several years ago when a special bucket imported from Japan was promoted by some health experts as a means of making healthy drinks. While the effectiveness of the enzyme drink remains unproven, garbage enzyme has been shown to be effective as an agent for cleaning toilets and floors, and as a fertilizer for plants.
Making wet garbage into an enzyme solution has been practiced in Southeast Asian countries for decades, greatly reducing household waste and protecting the environment by reducing the use of bleach (漂白剂) and other strong chemicals. Many people have realized that chemicals do harm to human body and the more garbage enzyme they make, the more good it does to the environment.
Any reduction in the volume of household garbage will benefit the city. Shanghai produces the largest amount of garbage than any other city in China. It is also home to the largest refuse landfill in Asia, the Laogang Refuse Landfill in Pudong New Area, which occupies a total area of about 30 square kilometers. It is struggling to accommodate all of the city's garbage, with a fifth phase under construction. The landfill and its surrounding areas are heavily polluted, something that nearby residents have been complaining about for years. The process of making enzyme solution consumes wet garbage. This means residents don't produce wet garbage after they start to make garbage enzyme. They even find the amount of wet garbage produced by their families is insufficient, so that they have to ask for garbage from their neighbors. Another advantage is that producing garbage enzyme encourages people to think more about garbage separation — something the local government has been trying to encourage but which still is not practiced by some residents.
1.Which of the following belongs to the usage of garbage enzyme?
A.Making plants more fragrant.
B.Creating materials to clean houses.
C.Producing effective healthy drinks.
D.Reducing the amount of dry garbage.
2.What is the writer's attitude toward garbage enzyme?
A.Disapproving. B.Ambiguous. C.Favorable. D.Skeptical.
3.How will garbage enzyme possibly affect people in the future?
A.It will force people to ask for more garbage from their neighbors.
B.It will prevent people from using chemicals to clean their houses.
C.It will shelter people from household garbage pollution for good and all.
D.It will make people take garbage separation seriously before dumping it.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The threat of constructing more landfills.
B.How to classify garbage wisely and practically.
C.How to make garbage enzyme at home successfully.
D.The practice of turning leftover into a household product.

Literature reflects life. So in ageing Japan there are a large number of hit books by aged authors. “Age 90: what’s so great about it?” is a humorous essay on the difficulties of the elderly, by Aiko Sato, who is 95. It sold one million copies in 2017, making it Japan’s bestselling book that year.
In 2018 the Akutagawa literary prize went to Chisako Wakatake, 63 at the time, for her first novel “Live by Myself”. The books talk about how to live in old age. “Going to Die Soon”, also by Ms Uchidate, features 78-year-old Hana, a former alcohol-shop owner trying to make the most of her remaining years. The novel has been called a book for shukatsu, or preparing for death, making readers think more deeply about what it means to age.
Japan’s population has the world’s highest percentage of over-65s. People are living longer, so many have at least 20-30 years of retirement, for much of which they are energetic.
And although the Japanese have been spending less on books, that is least true for the over-60s. Lawson, a convenience-store chain, recently decided to stock books with the older generation in mind.
But the wrinkly writers’ books are attracting younger readers, too. Some are preparing for their own old age or want to understand the increasing number of old people they see around them. Others find relevance in the themes explored, such as loneliness, a problem that stretches well beyond the silver-haired.
The most notable feature of the new trend is that the vast majority of authors, and main characters, are women. Especially popular, are the ara-hun (“around-hundred” years-old) writers like Ms Sato, whose book, readers say, helps them be more positive. Their popularity also reflects support for strong women who are passionate about their work, a phenomenon that is all too rare in Japan today.
1.“Going to Die Soon” is a book ________.
A.about how to stay positive in old age
B.which won the Akutagawa literary prize in 2018
C.which helps people live the rest of the life to the fullest
D.written by a 78-year-old Hana, an alcohol-shop owner
2.The books by aged authors are popular with younger readers because ________.
A.young readers now have more elder relatives
B.young readers face similar problems as the elderly
C.young readers are worried about becoming old
D.young readers are as lonely as the elderly
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Aged writers might be more successful than younger writers.
B.An aging society brings more chances for women writers.
C.People have to work after their retirement in an aging society.
D.Ambitious career women might not be popular with the Japanese.

From the health point of view we are living in a wonderful age. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of people on the roads. Man is opposite to the motor-car! It is a never ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people are killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.
It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering-wheel(方向盘) , his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They are rude, ill-mannered and aggressive. All their hidden frustrations and disappointments seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.
The surprising thing is that society smiles on the motorist and seems to forgive the behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities and towns are made ugly by huge car parks.
It is high time a world law were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough. A law which was universally accepted could only have a beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some things that might be done. The driving test should be made to a fixed standard and far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21 ; all vehicles should be put through strict annual tests for safety. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be mad much stricter. Driving speed should be limited on all roads. These measures may sound extremely severe. But surely nothing should be considered difficult if it results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.
1.The main idea of this passage is______.
A. traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists
B. thousands of people in the world are killed each year
C. only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents
D. the laws of some countries about driving are too strict

A. It is right to build huge car parks in cities and towns.
B. all the drivers must be asked to take a test every year.
C. Working by car can save time and money.
D. Society overlooks their rude driving.
3.Why does the author say" his car becomes the extension of his personality" ?
A. Driving can show his real self.
B. Driving can bring out his good character.
C. Driving can make a man excited and joyful.
D. Driving can make a man quiet and pleasant.
4.The attitude of the author is______.
A. approving B. critical
C. sympathetic D. aggressive
