(2017届吉林市第一中学高三模考)You get on an almost-empty bus, but the next passenger decides to ignore all the empty seats to sit right next to you. While you are waiting in line at the supermarket, the next customer stands just behind you shouting into his phone.
These are attacks of the personal space invaders(侵略者). Though preferences for personal space differ from culture to culture, we Britons do love our independence and personal space.
As the British customs website Debrett has said, as a British person, somebody standing too close may make you "focus less on what somebody is saying than on how close they are to you". Simple acts like putting an arm around someone you don’t know that well may seem friendly in China, but they can make us very uncomfortable. The ediplomat.com website explains: "The British are not back slappers (拍打者) or touchers and generally do not show affection (喜欢) in public."
Being a British person around people from other countries can therefore be full of problems. People from many European countries such as France and Spain kiss each other on the cheek when they meet, yet to us this seems too friendly and "touchy-feely".
Simple matters like how close others stand can be problems to Britons who want to keep their own personal space. Giving advice on how to behave around a British person, Debrett’s says that "if you can feel the warmth of their worried breath upon your face, then you’re standing too close".
So, are British people unfriendly? No. The ediplomat.com website explains that we are not as "indifferent" as we may seem, but "very friendly and helpful to foreigners". However, we do have different ideas about our own space to many people from other countries. Just let us know if you’re going to come any closer than arm’s length, and you’ll be fine!

It could happen just about any time you step out in public. You get onto an almost-empty bus, but the next passenger in decides to ignore dozens of empty seats to sit right next to you. While you're waiting in line at a supermarket, the next customer insists on standing only two inches behind you and shouting into his cell-phone. You go into a public restroom, and the next person to enter decides to use the next stall. Transgressions(冒犯) like these don't just make us feel uncomfortable; we often feel anxious, alarmed; and violated(被侵犯的). It is the attack of the personal-space invaders.
In any society, shared definitions of personal space govern how we interact with other people. People living in densely(密集地) populated cities like Mumbai, Beijing, or Mexico City tend to require less personal space than people living in sparsely(稀少地) populated places within the country. In America, New Yorkers often have smaller requirements than residents of western states, like Montana, Shenandoah and Wyoming. Because everyone has different standards, gestures that are innocent in one place can be interpreted as opposite in another, especially in Britain.
As the British etiquette(礼仪) website Debrett puts it, as a British person, somebody standing too close may make you "focus less on what somebody is saying than on how close they are to you". Simple acts like putting an arm around someone you don't know may seem friendly in China, but they can make us very uncomfortable. People from many European countries such as France and Spain kiss each other on the cheek when they meet, yet to British person, this seems too friendly and "touch-freely". The website explains! "The British are not backslappers(拍人后背的人) and generally do not show affection in public".

You have never seen him, but they're with you every time you fly. They record where you are going, how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand(经受得住)almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a magic book. They're known as the black box.
When planes fall from the sky,as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the India ocean June 30,2009,the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine(潜水艇)detected the device's homing signal five days later, the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed.
In 1958,Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first mode for a black box, which became a requirement on all U.S.commercial flights by 1960.Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device(装置)was completely redesigned and moved to the back of the plane-the area least affected bu impact-from its original position in the landing wells(起落架舱). The same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.
Modern airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots' conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircraft's final moments.Placed in an insulated ( 隔绝的) case and surrounded by a quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel, the boxes can withstand massive force and temperatures up to 2,000℉.When in deep water, they're also able to emit signals from depths of 20,000 ft.Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447,which crashed near Brazil on June 1,2009,are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they're still likely to turn up.In the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one plane's black boxes were never recovered.
1.In Paragraph 1,the author wants to say the black box_________.
A. comes from a comic book B. is an necessary device on an airplane
C. can prevent disasters D. can control the function of an airplane
2.From the black box on the Yemeni airliner _________ could be found.
A. the scene of the crash and the degree of the damage B. the total number of passengers on board
C. homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash D. data for analyzing the cause of the crash
3.Why was the black box redesigned in 1965?
A. The early models often got damaged in the crash. B. New materials became available by that time.
C. Too much space was needed for its device. D. The early models didn't provide the needed data.
4.What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?
A. They have stopped sending homing signals. B. There is an urgent need for them to be reconstructed.
C. There is still a good chance of their being recovered. D. They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.

[2017·云南师范大学附属中学高三高考适应性考试(四)]
“How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind and deaf, you were able to accomplish so much?” Queen Victoria of England asked Helen Keller.
Ms Keller answered, “If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”
In fact, “Little Annie”, as she was called when she was young, was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless herself (due to a childhood fever) and was, at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly “insane” and was locked in the basement of a mental institution. On occasion, Little Annie would even violently attack anyone who came near.
An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and she made it her mission to show love to the child. She still continued to visit for she believed Little Annie could recover, if she was shown love.
Eventually, doctors noticed a change in the girl. Where they witnessed anger and coldness they noted gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly “hopeless” child was released.
Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She loved her, disciplined her, played with her and worked with her until the weak candle became a beacon of light to the world. She worked wonders in Helen's life; but it was a loving nurse who first believed in Little Annie and lovingly transformed an uncommunicative child into a compassionate teacher.
“If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.” But if it had not been for a kind and dedicated nurse, the name of Anne Sullivan would have remained unknown. And so it goes. And how far forward will it lead?
1.When she was young, Little Annie________.
A.enjoyed being locked in the basement of a mental institution
B.complained about her loneliness
C.showed her friendly attitude to others
D.suffered from mental illness
2.Why did the “hopeless” Little Annie change into a helpful one?
A.Because an efficient way was found by doctors to cure her illness.
B.Because a nurse who was concerned about her helped her constantly.
C.Because she was taken good care of by her relative.
D.Because the illness was defeated by her own strong will.
3.How did Anne Sullivan help Helen Keller?
A.She devoted all her time to dealing with everything for Helen Keller.
B.She promised Helen Keller never to leave her.
C.She trained Helen Keller to control her behaviour.
D.She encouraged Helen Keller to make friends with others.
4.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

B.Chain of love
C.Without respect, without success
D.God helps those who help themselves
