Are people less or more happy when they get older? A study in 2018 found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were the highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. 1.
Happiness was the highest among the youngest adults and those in their early 70's. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their 70’s and 80’s. The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. 2.The researchers also considered possible influences like, having young children being unemployed or being single. Bu, they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
3. One theory is that, as people get older, they become more than thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
4.In another study, people in their 80’s reported the fewest problems with the quality of their sleep. The original goal was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. 5.But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.
A. So why will happiness increase with age?
B. Researchers surveyed more than 150, 000 American adults.
C. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85.
D. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their 50's.
E Happiness is not the only thing that apparently improves with age.
F. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women.
G. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.

We all know that everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men’s minds decline more than women’s, according to the results of a worldwide survey.
General differences seem to be natural in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel be good at recalling information from their brain’s files. Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed.
Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline.
Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, “so they’re the ones that may not have shown such cognitive(认知的) decline,” said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England.
Scientists surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time, e.g. “object usually colored gray”, and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men are usually good; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.

3.One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that ________.
A.women live longer than men
B.people surveyed are all old
C.the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive decline
D.people taking part in this test came from all over the world
4.The author aims to tell us that _________.
A.women’s minds perform better than men’s
B.men’s minds decline more with age
C.everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older
D.a survey on human’s mind decline was done recently

American college students are becoming more adventuresome as they study abroad, showing less interests in English-speaking destinations such as Great Britain and Australia and more in such countries as China, India, Argentina and Brazil.
Britain remained the most popular study destination in 2005, according to annual figures from the Institute of International Education, followed by Italy, Spain and France. But the number of American students studying in Britain and Australia descended a little, even as the number of American students abroad rose by 8%. The growth came in non-English speaking European countries and in Asia. China is now the eighth most popular destination for American students, attracting nearly 6,400 in 2005, up 35% from the number of the year before. Argentina and India saw increases of more than 50%.
Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, said that a range of factors contributed to the trend, from growing awareness of globalization after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to programs such as former President Bush’s National Security Language Initiative, which trains soldiers, intelligence officers and diplomats in foreign languages. “What Americans are doing is waking up and discovering there’s a world out there,” he said.
Other figures showed the flow of students in the opposite direction, from foreign countries into American universities. The institute found that international enrollment (入学) in American higher education remained steady at about 565,000. The figures are of keen interest to universities, which depend on foreign students for teaching and research help, and to policy-makers, who consider it important, as future foreign leaders may be familiar with the United States. The year of 2005 saw big increases in students from South Korea, Mexico and Taiwan of China. India sends the most students and China is No.2. Other countries that show large percentage increases in the number of students sent to the US include Nepal and Vietnam, while Japan, Turkey and Malaysia saw declines. About 58% of international students in the US come from Asia.

3.Where were most foreign students in America from in 2005?
A. China. B. India. C. Argentina. D. Britain.
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A. There were 6,400 American students studying in China in 2005.
B. Chinese students to America will overpass Indians in the future.
C. International enrollment in American higher education changed a lot.

Legos have been a kind of popular toys for children for more than 60 years. When children get older, boxes of plastic Lego bricks often end up unused and stored in out-of-the-way places around the homes. Parents sometimes end up throwing the Legos away.
Now, the Lego Group toy company is testing a program to make sure the unwanted bricks do not go to waste. The program is called Lego Replay. It aims to make sure the unwanted building blocks continue to make children happy.
Tim Brooks is the Lego company’s vice president of environmental sustainability. He said, "Nearly all Lego bricks we see that are out there have lots more play value in them — multi-generation of play value. It’s a waste of energy and resources to grind them up (碾碎)and make new bricks. ”
Brooks said the idea came from parents who do not know what to do with the old bricks. Placing old Legos in waste containers is not a good answer. Birds and other wildlife may try to eat what looks like Colorful food — with deadly results.
With the Lego Replay program, parents load unwanted Legos of all shapes and colors into boxes. Then, they go to the program website and print out a mailing label. The boxes are sent to processing centers, where the bricks are sorted, cleaned and shipped to aid groups and donation centers.
The Lego Replay test program is set to last through March. If it is successful, the program may be expanded to include other Lego products.
The Lego Group is also looking at other materials to use in their toys. While plastic has proved to be the strongest material, Lego has begun making some bricks out of sugar cane(甘蔗).
1.What’s the main purpose of Lego Replay?
A.To entertain those children without toys.
B.To make unwanted Lego bricks reused.
C.To prevent parents to throw the Legos away.
D.To avoid using unwanted bricks by storing them.
2.Where are unwanted Lego bricks sorted and cleaned according to Lego Replay?
A.At processing centers.
B.At donation centers.
C.On the program website.
D.In the owners’ homes.
3.What does Brooks probably agree with?
A.Lego bricks waste too many resources.
B.Unwanted Lego bricks still have value.
C.We should store old Legos in waste containers.
D.Lego bricks are favorite food of some birds.
4.What does the Lego Group explore according to the last paragraph?
A.More other Lego products.
B.Proper use of plastics.
C.Similar products to sugar cane.
D.New materials of producing bricks.

More and more people, especially in developed countries, arc becoming older. In the United States there are currently over 40 million people aged 65 and over, more than 10 million are over 85. Caring for these senior citizens is becoming a necessity, and a big industry.
Traditionally, care for the elderly has taken place in an extended family, where grandparents live at home and are helped by other family members. However, as more and more young people enter the work force full time they cannot care for their parents or grandparents any more. There are more than 10,000 organizations that provide care for the elderly. More than 1,000 were founded last year alone. Ordinary people quit their jobs and start private care centers, where they offer senior citizens their services.
One of the most difficult aspects of such an organization is finding the right people to do the job. Caring for the elderly is not an easy task. It requires skill and patience. Among daily tasks are preparing meals, washing older people, or simply keeping them company. Many care workers quit because they find it very depressing(令人沮丧的). It is important to help the elderly stay mobile as long as possible. When they cannot walk or climb stairs they need more help: thus costs become higher. Care workers concentrate on exercises to help them stay mobile. In many cases assisted living replaces round-the-clock health care. Elderly people need help with some daily tasks but can mostly live on their own. It also costs less than full nursing care.
While wealthy Americans turn to private care centers, those who are poorer cannot pay for the services because Medicare does not cover it. Not all countries offer health care provided by the state. In Asia and Africa, for example, older people are cared for by family members.

C. Costs for nursing care. D. Difficulties in running a care centre.
4.How many daily tasks for nursing care are mentioned in the text?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

Common sense would tell us that physically active children may be more likely to become active and healthy adults.
In the United States, elementary and middle schools are advised to give students two and a half hours of physical activity a week. That is what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Heart Association recommend. They say high schools should provide about four hours of physical activity each week.
Yet many schools across the country have reduced their physical education programs. Just this week, a study reported that lifeexpectancy has fallen or is no longer increasing in some parts of the United States. The situation is worst among poor people in the southern states, and especially women. Public health researchers say it is largely the result of increases in fatness, smoking and high blood pressure. They also blame differences in health services around the country.
In 2006, a study found that only four percent of primary schools provided daily physical education all year for all grades. This was true of eight percent of middle schools and two percent of high schools. The study also found that twenty-two percent of all schools did not require students to take any P.E.
Charlene Burgeson , a health expert says one problem for P.E. teachers is that schools are under pressure to put more time into academic subjects. Also, parents may agree that children need exercise in school. Yet many parents today still have bad memories of being chosen last for teams because teachers favored the good athletes in class.
But experts say P.E. classes have changed. They say the goal has moved away from competition and toward personal performance, as a way to build a lifetime of activity. These days, teachers often lead activities like weight training and yoga.
Some parents like the idea of avoiding competitive sports in P.E. class. Yet others surely dislike that idea. In the end, schools may find themselves in a no-win situation.
