Employment practices often reflect the needs of employers several decades ago.Times have changed. And so too has the Canadian workforce.Yet many employment practices have not kept pace with this change. For example, some work environments and washrooms designed for able-bodied workers seldom accommodate people who use a wheelchair.
Modernizing these practices is what employment equality is about. For example, making sure work benches and washrooms are adapted for disabled people entering the workplace paves the way for workers who become disabled on the job.By doing so, any given group of people? formerly discriminated against-now has access to better employment opportunities.
The objective, of course, is to make the workplace reflect Canadian society. However, this does not necessarily mean setting and enforcing quotas(实行配额). Rather, it means identifying the barriers to employment and designing measures, with achievable goals and clear timetables, to remove them.
For example, according to the Canadian Union of Public Employees-Canada's largest union, it would be unrealistic in the short term to insist that because half of the working age population is women, that half of the employees of an engineering firm should be women. At this moment, there would not be enough qualified female engineers.
A reasonable numerical goal would be based on the number of women who actually are engineers (8% ) and those who are studying to become engineers (25% ).A short term goal of 13% would be appropriate without running the risk of hiring unqualified people.
Equally important is to ensure people who have been disadvantaged the chance to become qualified for new opportunities. If aboriginal people (土著居民) , for example, can't qualify for certain jobs because they haven't had access to appropriate educational opportunities, then an employment equality program would have to address that problem with training programs.
Employment laws in this country cannot be considered displeasing if they guarantee all Canadians fair and equal access to the workforce.

One of the most fundamental changes brought about in the last decade is the rise of remote learning. With the global climate crisis and health pandemics, remote learning has become even more relevant today. Schools, universities and corporates can continue affording education and training by remote technology in the time of social distancing due to the COVID-19 crisis. 1.
Learn Anywhere, Anytime
Gone is the need to be on campus at a specific time of day and remain there for the duration of numerous classes. 2.. More importantly, it has also made learning a practical choice for many rural communities who are unable to travel the vast distances to school every day and to remote teams working for companies located afar.
3.
When it comes to learning, one size doesn’t fit all People have varied learning styles that change depending on the nature of the content they are trying to absorb. E-Learning allows learners to personalize their education, focusing on areas that need greater attention in more detail. Also, rather than being a one-way path where the learner listens and takes in information, online training means that learners can pursue areas that interest them in more detail.
Better Engagement
Keeping learners engaged throughout the training is one of the key struggles. One of the strengths of E-Learning is the diverse nature in which the course content is delivered. 4. Some online learning communities allow trainers to provide multimedia recording to make training more engaging. With the game engine, they also have the option to gamify content and include rewards once sections are completed for young employees and fresh graduates who might have just passed out from school and are still transitioning to the corporate world. 5.
A.E-Learning gives people the flexibility to be able to learn at home, anytime they want.
B.Personalized Learning Experience
C.Learn more in detail
D.Learners are now used to and expect interactivity.
E.Nearly 30 percent of learners, or more than six million students, having taken at least one course online.
F.Overall, there are a few core reasons to opt (选择) for remote learning.
G.Quizzes, polls, and discussion boards also mean trainees get to discuss content and interact with one another.

About three decades ago, China was known as the “Bicycle Kingdom”. But the two-wheeled way of transport’s popularity began to fade, with many bikes soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors.
But recent months have seen a revival of the bike across China, with an increasing number of people choosing cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplances or to do sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing systems has brought the trend to a new level.
People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphones. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They’re popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “last mile” problem, which refers to the final leg of a person’s journey.
However, the systems have also led to problems such as illegal parking, damage and theft. Last month, two nurses in Beijing were placed under arest for five days for putting locks on two shared bikes.
“Bike-sharing is a greener method of transportation and provides a user-friendly experience,” said Liu Xiaoming, vice-minister of transport. “ But it’s a combination of online and offline business. Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business experience, which causes problems.”
Now, Chinese service operators are trying to handle these problems. For example, a bike-sharing company called Mobike sets a 100-piont credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior. Once a score drops below 80, bike rental is increased to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5-1 yuan.
1.The underlined word “revival” in paragraph 2 probably means .
A. survival B. recovery
C. existence D. popularity
2.The bike-sharing systems are popular because .
A. they are very effective B. they can be picked up anywhere
C. they are equipped with GPS D. they help to solve the “last mile” problem
3.To solve the problems of illegal parking, damage and theft, operators need to .
A. offer stronger online services B. combine online and offline business
C. provide credit score for users D. obtain more offline business experience

I have been reading about Leonardo da Vinci for decades, and in 1994 I bought one of the notebooks, in which Leonardo recorded his thoughts and outlined ideas.
What does a Renaissance(文艺复兴) artist have to do with optimism? For me, the connection is innovation. I feel optimistic about the future because I know that advances in human knowledge have improved life for billions of people, and I am confident they will keep doing so. Although I am no art expert, everything I have learned about Leonardo leads me to believe he was one of the most innovative thinkers ever.
Today of course Leonardo is most famous for paintings like the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. But in his mind, Leonardo was not primarily a painter. He thought of himself as an engineer first. In a letter to the ruler of Milan listing his strengths, sent in the early 1480s, Leonardo mentioned ten different skills — designing bridges, tunnels, for example — before adding at the end that he could also paint.
Leonardo was a never-ending learner. He studied everything he could see: the flow of water, the way smoke rises through the air, how a bird uses its tongue. And he had insights that were ahead of his time. He was the first person to correctly explain why you can see light between the two points of a crescent moon, the phenomenon we now call earthshine.
Scientific inquiries like these were essential to Leonardo’s art. He was able to give the Mona Lisa that mysterious look on her face because he had studied all the muscles involved in smiling. In The Last Supper, he could make the perspective lines (透视线) work perfectly because he had spent countless hours understanding how our eyes see objects at a distance. By examining his surroundings so closely, Leonardo was able to develop new techniques that advanced his field and described the world in a way no one had ever seen before. In other words, he was an innovator.
1.In what way does Leonardo da Vinci make the author feel optimistic about future?
A.The creativity he represents. B.His famous paintings.
C.The outline of his notebook. D.His engineering achievements.
2.What can we learn about Leonardo da Vinci according to the text?
A.He desires to know more at all times.
B.He is able to raise difficult questions.
C.He has a strong desire for achievement.
D.He is able to learn and understand things fast.
3.What does the last paragraph focus on?
A.Which fields Leonardo was expert in.
B.Why Leonardo is regarded as an innovator.
C.What made the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper stand out.
D.How Leonardo applied scientific theories to his paintings.
4.Which of the following can best summarize Leonardo da Vinci according to the text?
A.Curious about arts. B.Talented in many fields.
C.Determined in science. D.Skilled in paintings.

Is language, like food, a basic human need? Judging from the extreme experiment of Frederick in the 13th century, it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue he told the nurses to keep silent.
All the babies died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation (剥夺,丧失). What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the ability to survive is seriously affected.
Today no such extreme deprivation exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to signals of the baby, whose brain is programmed, to mop up language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems when children learn more rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.
Linguists suggest that speech milestones are reached in a fixed order and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.
Recent evidence suggests that a baby is born with the ability to speak. What is special about man’s brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a teddy bear with the sound pattern “teddy bear”.
But speech has to be developed, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling, clinging, grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals reduces the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child’s nonverbal (非语言的) signals is basic to the growth and development of language.
1.Frederick’s experiment was extreme because _________.
A.he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speak
B.he wanted his nurses to say another language
C.he was unkind to the nurses
D.he ignored the importance of mothering to the babies
2.The reason that some children are backward in speaking is most likely that _________.
A.they do not listen carefully to their mothers
B.their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak
C.their brain has to absorb too much language at once
D.their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them
3.In paragraph 3, by “critical times” the author means _________.
A.difficult periods in the child’s life
B.moments when the child becomes critical towards its mother
C.important stages in the child’s development
D.times when mothers often neglect their children
4.If a child starts to speak later than others, he will _________ in future.
A.have a high IQ B.be less intelligent
C.not necessarily be backward D.be insensitive to verbal signals
5.If the mother seldom responds to her child’s signals, _________.
A.the child will be able to speak properly
B.the child will continue to give out signals
C.the child will invent a language of own
D.the child will make little effort to speak

For about a decade, I knew that I needed to improve my handwriting, but I always put it off. “My typing skills are good, my communication skills are good, and all my other abilities are adequate for the job I do and the life I live. Why would I need to improve my handwriting in such a modern world?” I thought.
I was sort of hit by the fact that my handwriting needed improving quite suddenly in the form of a note from my boss. Obviously one of the notes I had posted on the office message board had been misunderstood because of my handwriting. My boss demanded that I learn to write in a neat way, something I couldn’t ignore any longer.
I tried a lot of different methods to improve my handwriting. Nowadays, there are more resources than before. You don’t even have to go to the store and can buy handwriting training materials online. I tried out a lot of these, and my handwriting did improve somewhat. Now I make sure I form every letter correctly. This is inconvenient and time-consuming, but it is better than having my comments misread.
People come up to me and tell me how nice my handwriting is. I have never thought of that, but this is exactly what has happened. It really is a pleasure, but it isn’t enough. In the long run, I actually have to go to a handwriting coach to improve my handwriting. It seems like I have years and years of bad habits that I have to break, and this isn’t something I could handle on my own. I need someone to teach me how to write clearly from the ground up.

A.he had planned for that for a long time
B.he was shocked by his boss’ good handwriting
C.he was often misunderstood because of his handwriting
D.his boss asked him to work on his handwriting
3.How did the writer try to improve his handwriting?
A.He practiced writing mainly on his own.
B.He practiced writing and typing at the same time.
C.He joined a handwriting training class.
D.He employed a coach to teach him online.
4.What does the writer think of his handwriting at present?
A.Unacceptable. B. Perfect. C. Worse. D. Better.

It doesn't take decades of life experience to have a great idea, as many of these young inventors have proved.
The Electronic Television
The electronic television was first designed by a 14-year-old kid in 1920. Philo Taylor Farnsworth shared his concept of an image transmitting (影像传送) device, an early design of the electronic television, with his science teacher, drawing diagrams on several blackboards in class.
By the age of 21 Farnsworth had a working model which served as a basis to all later development and versions of electronic televisions, After discovering a collection of technology magazines in the attic (阁楼) of his family's new home, he developed a passion and interest in electronics, which led him to explore inventions in the field of, specifically, the image transmission.
In 1927, a few years out of high school, Farnsworth was the first inventor to transmit a television image of a dollar sign, composed of 60 horizontal lines.
Braille Language
Louis Braille suffered a serious eye injury when he was just 3 years old. Not only did the accident cause him blindness on that side, but the infection spread and blinded the other eye as well. After more than a decade of struggling with the slow system of tracing his finger over raised letters, Braille was 12 when he learned of a method of silent communication originally created for the French military. He simplified it, and in 1824 the Braille language was born.
Popsicles (冰棍)
A lot of kids are easily distracted (分散注意力)—and thanks to the short attention span of 11-year-old Frank Epperson we now have popsicles. In 1905, Epperson, a San Francisco native, was stirring powdered drink mix into a cup of water when something else caught his attention. The mixture was forgotten outside the door, and when Epperson rediscovered the drink in the morning, it was a deliciously portable frozen popsicle. After years of making the frozen treats for friends, and eventually his own. children, Epperson filed for a patent in 1924.
1.Who contributed his intelligence to the invention of TV?
A.Philo Taylor Farnsworth
B.Farnsworth's science teacher.
C.Louis Braille.
D.Epperson.
2.Which invention was accidentally made because of poor concentration?
