A few weeks ago, I came back from work and found my young daughter waiting for me in the hallway. She greeted me and laughed. As I put my bike into the house, she asked me to say the word---butterfly. So I did. “Butterfly,” I said. “Daddy,” she said, trying to prevent a laugh. “It’s pronounced butterfly, not bu-uh-fly.” It was then that I realized she asked me to pronounce the word on purpose. She was clear that the way I pronounced such words was different from hers. She ran off laughing aloud, almost as if she couldn’t believe her luck that I had fallen into her trap. This is her new trick. If I pronounce something in a way she is not familiar with, she will make her feelings known.
All of this is due to my London accent. And it is fairly obvious. Her trick first started when she asked how old I was. I told her, “I’m 37 years old.” She said, “Thur-eee? Not thur-eee. Thir-tee.” She shook her head at me in disappointment for I couldn’t get my basic pronunciation right.
My daughter’s obsession with my dropped “t”s is becoming wearing. I find myself paying attention to everything I say. And by everything, I mean e-ver-y-thing, not every-fing.
I tried to explain the concept of accents to her. Because she is growing up in Bristol, she starts to develop some strange West Country accent, like her pronunciation of the number two. It sounds like that it has an extra “w” on the end. She sometimes also adds a doing word to the end of her sentences, like “I’m going to the park, I am.” Or “Your pronunciation is funny, you do.”
She refused to accept she had an accent. She told me that she sounded like herself, which was true. But I want to make her aware of the importance of accepting that people say things in different ways and that there’s no correct way to speak. I wanted my daughter to appreciate differences, instead of wanting us all to conform to one voice.
1.What is the author’s daughter’s new trick? (no more than 12 words)
2.Why did the author speak in that way? (no more than 10 words)
3.How does the author react to her daughter’s obsession? (no more than 10 words)
4.How do you understand the underlined part in paragraph 5? (no more than 10 words)
5.What do you learn from the text? (no more than 20 words)

A few weeks ago, I picked up my 14-year-old daughter and her friend from dance class. The two girls chatted happily until I reached her friend’s house. And then 1 began the drive home and my daughter, who had been talking nonstop a minute before, went completely silent. I assumed she was lost in thought.
When I came to a stoplight, I looked in the mirror. My daughter wasn’t looking out of the window or staring into space - she was on her phone. I felt my anger rise.
“Get off your phone. That is rude. You make me feel like an Uber driver.” I shouted.
“But I’m texting friends about biology homework!’’ she said.
“That can wait.” I was mad and she was angry.
Back home, she disappeared into her room, and I thought about how I was still trying to take control of my daughter’s growing independence, which was fruitless.
The next day I was thinking about my outburst when a parenting program on TV caught my eye, in which the hosts interviewed Dr. Ken Ginsburg, the author of a famous parenting book. It completely changed my attitude.
Ginsburg said. “Why are our teens pushing us away? It’s not because they hate us - it’s because they love us so much and yet they know they have to become independent. So this is a process of figuring out how to push away the things they love the most. It is crazy to fly from a comfortable nest, so teens get ready for it by temporarily pushing their parents away.”
I need to honor her independence and create space for both of us to face this monumental developmental challenge as teammates, not adversaries((对手).
1.What made the writer mad?
A.She served as an Uber driver.
B.The two girls were chatting happily.
C.Her daughter was playing with the phone.
D.Her daughter forgot her biology homework.
2.What do we know about the daughter?
A.She is being under her mother’s control.
B.She is on the way to being independent.
C.She enjoys making friends using social media.
D.She hates making conversation with her mom.
3.Which of the following best describes the mother?
A.Open-minded. B.Hardworking.
C.Inspiring. D.weak-willed.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.I was pushed away by my teenaged daughter.
B.Life of a teenager is moving at its own slow pace.
C.Parents completely rely on parenting experts to educate children.
D.My relationship with my daughter was improved by a suggestion.

I work as the reception manager at my hotel.
A booking came in a few weeks ago with a note attached that a guest would be travelling with her deaf father. This note helped us in preparing for their arrival. As they would be here for a number of days, his daughter wanted to make his trip to Ireland as smooth as possible.
Upon seeing this note and knowing I would be the one to check them in, I decided to learn some very basic sign language. I greeted the guest in my usual fashion, asking for the surname on the booking. Once I heard the name,I immediately realized who was standing in front of me.
I had been learning for two weeks how to say: “Welcome to Ireland. My sign language is terrible, but please, if you need anything during your stay, just let me know and we will help you.”
I smiled at the father and daughter in front of me. Turning to the father, I greeted him in ASL (American Sign Language) and began the bit I had learned for him. His daughter broke down crying and told me I was sweet. But the father just smiled and was so happy. Honestly, seeing his reaction was enough for me. It was absolutely worth the last few weeks of learning basic ASL.
Sadly, I wasn’t working the day they checked out, but they left a gift for me, a small box with some chocolates and a book on ASL. Inside was a note saying: “Thank you very much for what you did. My father has been in amazing spirits from the time you checked us in and insisted we get you a gift before we left. You have no idea how much this meant to my father and me, and we can’t thank you enough. You've made his trip very special with one simple gesture.”
I cried for a solid five minutes when I came into work the next day and found this gift in my locker.
