Attitude is an internal(内在的) state that influences the choices of personal action made by the individual. Some researchers consider that attitudes come from differences between beliefs and ideas; others believe that attitudes come from emotional states. Here, we focus on the effects of attitudes upon behavior, that is, upon the choices of action made by the individual.
The kinds of actions taken by human beings are obviously influenced greatly by attitudes. Whether one listens to classical music or rock, whether one obeys the speed limit while driving, whether one encourages one’s husband or wife to express his or her own ideas—all are influenced by attitudes. These internal states are acquired throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the school.
Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the particulars of that situation. An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight. A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may steal a penny when she thinks no one will notice. But the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and which makes the individual behave regularly in a variety of situations, is what is meant by an attitude.
Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways. They can result from single incidents, as when an attitude toward snakes is acquired by an experience in childhood at the sudden movement of a snake. They can result from the individual’s experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positive attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to complete some of them. And frequently, they are learned by copying other people’s behavior, as when a child learns how to behave toward foreigners by observing the actions of his parents. Regardless of these differences, there is something in common in the learning and modification(修正) of attitudes.

Is there a limit to the number of years that a person can expect to live? Can changes in life-style add years to one’s life? Throughout history people have sought answers to these questions and others.
Various myths offer the hope of great longevity. In the imaginary land of Shangri-La, for example, people are said to lead a charmed existence for a thousand years. The Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon was convinced that he would find the Foundation of Youth in what is now the state of Florida. According to the Bible, Methuselah lived to be more than 900 years old.
The subject of longevity is fascinating, and scientists study individuals such as Jeanne Calment to learn about the aging process. Calment died in 1997 in Arles, France, at the age of 122. She never married, and she lived in her own apartment until moving to a retirement community when she was 109.
Most scientists agree that bodies will last, at best, about 125 years. This potential has changed little since modern human beings appeared more than 100 thousand years age. Recent improvements in medicine and the environment have extended life expectancy, especially for those from poorer parts of the world. It is not clear, however, whether such improvements will lengthen life expectancy beyond a certain point.
Life expectancy is the number of years an infant can be expected to live, given the conditions into which it is born. Life expectancy, therefore, is affected by nutrition, medical care, and social and political circumstances. An individual’s genetic makeup is also an important factor. Children from long-lived families can hope to enjoy long lives themselves. According to recent data, the average life expectancy worldwide in 1998 was 67 years. This can be compared with an average life expectancy of 77 in the United States.
In 1970 the average life expectancy worldwide was 61 years, or 6 years less than it was in 1998. This same period saw a drop in infant mortality -— the death of a child before the first birthday-—from 80 births out of 1,000 to 54 births out of 1,000. According to some researchers, the rise in the average life expectancy is due primarily to the drop in infant mortality. It is not so much that adults are living to an older age. It is, rather, that more people are living into adulthood because more children are surviving beyond their first birthdays.
1.Infant mortality is defined as ________ .
A. the number of children born alive
B. the kinds of behavior typical of very young children
C. the number of children, out of 1,000 births, who die before their first birthday
D. the typical and obvious thoughts of very young children
2.Although it may be possible to improve the life expectancy of a particular group of people, ________ .
A. it is more difficult to affect the rate of infant mortality
B. it is unlikely that one will be able to extend the potential life span of human beings in general
C. the process of evolution is extending the potential life span beyond 125 years
D. the potential that bodies will last, at best, about 125 years has changed much since modern human beings appeared
3.One can infer that people have at times imagined that ________ .
A. people live longer in the state of Florida
B. a long life is a burden rather than a blessing
C. it is possible to find a way to live for centuries
D. life expectancy is affected by a couple of factors
4.One can conclude that ________ .
A. the aging process can be stopped.
B. the aging process is inevitable.
C. life expectancy in the United States will soon reach 125 years.
D. the average life expectancy worldwide is decreasing

A name is more than just a word. It carries the weight of a person’s whole identity. A name can represent a person’s ethnicity (种族身份) and culture, or show respect for their ancestral roots. A self-given name may represent a person’s beliefs or chosen identity.
Everyone has the right to have their name pronounced correctly. It is a sign of respect for a person’s individuality. “A person’s name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language,” Dale Carnegie writes in his book How to Win Friends and Influence People. Behind each name is a story, and when a name is anglicized (英语化), mispronounced, or ignored, that story is dismissed.
A name mispronounced for a long time can negatively impact a person’s attitude toward their own identity. It can create feelings of shame or embarrassment because they are made to feel like a burden. In the long term, this might cause someone to distance themselves from their roots. They may begin shying away from their native language, culture, and family for the sake of fitting in.
In order to avoid this, many international students living in the U.S. choose English names. People shouldn’t have to ignore their identities for the sake of someone else’s convenience.
Everyone makes mistakes, and not everyone can get a name right on the first try. Mispronouncing a name repeatedly, however, shows a lack of effort. It is not okay to be comfortable with mispronouncing names, and being unfamiliar with a language is no excuse.
If you’re unsure whether you’re pronouncing a name correctly, just ask. Think of it as a way to expand and strengthen understanding, both personally and culturally. When meeting someone for the first time, make sure that you heard the name correctly. It doesn’t take a lot to simply repeat the name back. Spell it out. Write it down. Do whatever you have to do to get the name right. Making the effort to correctly pronounce someone’s name is an essential part of cultural competency (文化素养). Without this, we cannot expect to show respect and tolerance for our diverse community.
1.What may a person’s name tell us?
A. His cultural background. B. His physical appearance.
C. His favorite sound. D. His attitude to life.
2.What’s the long-term influence of mispronouncing ones name?
A. The feeling of shame may be caused.
B. The person may feel over-burdened.
C. The character of the person may change.
D. The person may try to hide his roots.
3.What does the writer think of mispronouncing a name repeatedly?
A. It is unavoidable. B. It is unacceptable.
C. It strengthens friendship. D. It shows discrimination.
4.What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. How to show our respect for others. B. How to avoid mispronouncing names.
C. How to improve our pronunciation. D. How to live harmoniously in a community.
