Do you have a goal for life? What's it? Do you want to become a writer, singer or just become a rich person?
A recent survey shows that in modern society, most people pick up practical goals, such as “earning money to buy a house and a car”, “to improve one's life quality”, “finding a good job”.
Wang You worked in a small firm (商行) in Nanjing. The job was good and he didn't have to work for extra hours. However, he felt the work was not exciting at all and the life was boring. So he gave up his job and went to Beijing in February, 2007. When he arrived in Beijing, he set his new goal as finding a good job.
Nowadays more and more people want to live a better life. This fact shows that the society is making progress and people's life goals have become more practical. One researcher says, “Everybody has his/her own life goal, which will be surely different from people to people. If one is poor, one's life goal will be to earn more money; if one doesn't have a diploma, studying hard to get a diploma will become his life goal; and if one doesn't have love, his life goal will be to look for it. But if one has no life goal, he will idle away (虚度) his lifetime. {007}”

If you do not use your arm or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: Practice remembering.

Playing is serous business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.
Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

Before a new type of plane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others.
The first is called the “tank test”. A modern plane must fly very high in the sky. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. To test whether the plane is strong enough, it is put into a huge tank of water. If the plane can accept the pressure in the water tank, it proves that it is strong enough. If the plane is not strong enough, there will be an explosion(爆炸)in the water. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part should be made stronger.
The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through flight tests in the air. In the test, the pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot’s job to find out how he can get control of the plane again.
These two tests are examples of how planes are made before they ever carry passengers.

For Americans, a mosquito bite is an itchy(使人发痒的) bother, but for many in Africa, a tiny bite can be deadly. One million people die each year of malaria, a disease spread by infected mosquitoes. Most of these people live in Africa, and are under age 5.
Malaria can be prevented and treated. However, many African nations don’t have the funds to fight it. Nothing but Nets (NBN) hopes to change that. The United Nations Foundation created the campaign in 2006. The mission: Squash(压制) malaria by covering sleeping areas with nets. Hanging bed nets treated with insecticide(杀虫剂) is the simplest way to stop mosquitoes from biting at night. The chemical lasts four to five years. For $10, anyone can send a net to Africa and help save a life.
So far, NBN has raised $19 million and delivered 700,000 nets to seven countries. Families are taught how to use the nets. Kids also get vaccines(疫苗) and vitamins. “Women line up for miles to get these interventions(干预措施) for their kids,” says NBN director Elizabeth McKee Gore. “They understand the importance.” So do kids in this country. “They get so excited thinking of ways to raise money,” says NBN spokesperson and basketball star Ruth Riley.
NBN’s biggest fund-raiser is Katherine Commale, 7. She’s been spreading the buzz(嗡嗡声) about bed nets for the past two years. To show how they work, she and her brother made a picture. “We teach that bed nets can save lives,” she told TFK.
Katherine has raised $42,000 for NBN. “She just wants those who need a net to have one,” says her mom, Lynda. “It’s pretty simple to her.” To find out how you can help, visit nothingbutnets.net.

A long time ago, Milton S. Hershey, the creator of the popular chocolate bars, was dipped in warm chocolate. I know all about it. My grandfather was there!
At nineteen, Hershey established a candy business in Philadelphia. Although it failed, he tried again in several other cities and succeeded with Crystal A Caramels. But Hershey was not content. He began experimenting with chocolate and managed to sell his first chocolate bars in 1900. They were an instant success. In 1903, Hershey built a factory.
Hershey was usually pleasant and kind and enjoyed a good joke. However, in his chocolate factory, he held high standards for all the workers. He was both respected and feared. His anger would burst out when things didn’t go as he’d expected, and workers were fired for mistakes.
My grandfather began working in the factory as a young man. His job was to push the vats (大桶) of warm chocolate to a storage area. To do this, he had to push the heavy vats up a ramp (斜坡) and across the walkway. One day, Hershey was walking backward on the walkway while my grandfather was pushing a vat of chocolate up the ramp. Bump. Clunk. Ker-plop! Hershey fell backward into the vat. Everyone else held their breath and ran up to pull him out. Grandfather froze in fear. Was he going to lose his job?
Hershey stood stiffly with his hands on his hips. Color rose in his face. He said something in a low voice. Then he smiled. “It’s not your fault, son,” he said. “I need to watch where I’m going.” He put some chocolate in his mouth. “Mmm, that’s good,” he said. Everyone laughed. The tour continued, with Hershey dripping chocolate as he went. And Grandfather kept his job.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. But how do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults(过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Sometimes you will meet “fair weather friends”. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. So, I think another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on(信赖) a good friend. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. A good friend likes the same things I like. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!

Deep in the forest in the northern part of the Republic of Congo, scientists have made a surprising discovery.Researchers discovered more than 125,000 critically endangered western lowland gorillas.
In the 1980’s,scientists estimated that the total population of western lowland gorillas in Central Africa was fewer than 100,000.Since then, however, the scientists believed this number had been reduced by at least half. They thought the animals were being killed off by hunters and diseasses, especially the deadly Ebola virus.
The new population count was the result of intensive work by the Wildlife Conservation Society and scientists of the Republic of Congo. They searched rainforests, looking for gorilla nests.Gorillas build beds, or nests, for sleeping each night. The researchers use the number of nests they find to help estimate the local gorilla population. They found some forests had population densities that were among the highest ever recorded. The researchers studied an area of 47,000 square kilometers.
The scientists say the higher number of gorilla is the result of efforts by the Republic of Congo to take care of its protected areas. The gorillas have also done well because they live in areas far away from people. And they have plenty to eat.Wildlife Conservation Society president Steven Sanderson said the success of the gorillas is the proof that humans can help protect animal species in danger of disappearing.
Western lowland gorillas are one of four recognized gorilla subspecies(亚种)。 Other subspecies include mountain gorillas, eastern lowlang gorillas, and Cross River gorillas. The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers all of the subspecies to be critically endangered, except for the eastern lowland gorillas. That subspecies is considered endangered.

The ancient religions of the Greeks and Romans were based on myths. Originally the word meant “spoken words” or stories. Nowadays myths refer to tales without a kernel of truth, or fantasies.
In nearly every civilization people tried to control their surroundings and the things happening around them to make them less threatening. In prehistoric cultures myths were used to explain natural phenomena. Ancient civilizations saw the earth as the goddess because of its fertility. Other phenomena like wind, lightning and thunder also were brought into connection with supernatural forces. The people felt themselves surrounded by gods and completely dependent.
The Greek myths also originated in that manner, but had more functions. They also explained the beginning of the world and the origin of man. Furthermore, the myths kept alive the memories of the foundation of important cities as well as the heroic deeds of civilizations and individuals. The tales of heroes, human beings with often supernatural capacities, gave men examples of perfection. During the whole Classical Period people believed the myths, but over time they came to be taken less and less seriously.
During the Greek Period myths were spread by word of mouth. The singing of mythical events was an important aspect of religious ritual. Many singers traveled around and sang the tales they heard on their way.
The first collection of myths was the work of Homer. He was blind, and to survive he collected traditional stories and let them been written down by others. The books of his that we know are the Iliad and the Odyssey. The first author to write about the beginning of the world and its deities was Hesiod in the 18the century.
