Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school , I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.I stopped and wondered what I should do.A car pulled up behind me.It was the couple. They said they would take me.We chatted and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote them a thank-you note.Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in the morning. In late afternoon I found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment, so later, I wrote them a note to say thanks.I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever written him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

Yesterday,I drove my 23-year-old daughter to the nearby counseling center,to attempt once again to complete the treatment. I did my best to encourage and give her inspiring support as she was feeling anxious of the whole process.
While we were waiting, just minutes before the center opened their door,a young girl the same age as my daughter, came in. She had a beautiful smile I remember, and spoke of her desire to make a difference for others like my daughter from a11 she learned through her past drug abuse. My daughter was standing next to me and focused on doing her best to stay calm on the outside, while inside she was feeling quite anxious,so she barely noticed what this girl was saying. Yet,she did manage to open up and talk with her a bit about the noisy ceiling fan in the hall where we were waiting.
Next Friday,it will be a new opportunity for my daughter to try once again,as well as the possibility of being there for this young girl, too. I continue the example ot sell-love for my daughter, strengthening this skill, while encouraging my daughter’s positive changes.
I noticed yesterday,my daughter called her friends,“I am a strong woman!”This made me smile,as a sudden gift to me from when I had been speaking to her enthusiastically about how we are strong women, trying our best, and we overcome and win through our life challenges. A couple of weeks ago,my 12-year-old daughter Ella, threatened to take my phone and break it."At night you'll always have your phone out and you'll just type,"Ella says,"I'm ready to go to bed,and try to get you to read stories for me and you're just standing there reading your texts and texting other people,"she adds.I came to realize that I was ignoring her as a father.
Ella isn't the only kid who feels this way about her parent's relationship with devices.Catherine Steiner-Adair,a psychologist at Harvard, wrote The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age.For her book,Steiner-Adair interviewed more than 1,000 kids from the ages of 4 to 18.She talked to hundreds of teachers and parents.
"One of the many things that knocked my socks off,"she says,"was the consistency(一致性)with which children—whether they were 4 or 8 or 18—talked about feeling exhausted and frustrated or mad trying to get their parents’ attention, competing with computer screens or iPhone screens or any kind of technology."
A couple of years ago,my daughter got a laptop for school. And because she was becoming more independent, we got her a phone. We set up rules for when she could use the device and when she'd need to put it away.We created a charging station, outside her bedroom, where she had to plug in these devices every night.Basically, except for homework, she has to put it all away when she comes home.
Steiner-Adair says most adults don't set up similar limits in their own lives."We've lost the boundaries that protect work and family life,"she says."So it is very hard to manage yourself and be present in the moments your children need you."
After my daughter's little intervention(介入),I made myself a promise to create my own charging station. To plug my phone in—somewhere far away—when I am done working for the day.I've been trying to leave it there untouched for most of the weekend.

A. should control their use of phones

On May 28th, 1998 I was driving my 13-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son to school. Unfortunately my car crashed with a truck. All three of us were critically injured. Stacey’s brain injury was the most severe. Despite all attempts to save her, she died two days later. When I became conscious, I heard my husband talking to the organ donor coordinator(器官捐助协调员).
We knew that Stacey would want that because that’s the kind of person she was. She always wanted to assist people. She was always smiling and brought so much joy to others. She was friendly and enjoyed writing stories and poetry.
It has been a comfort to know that Stacey lives on in the lives of others. I have even met the family of one of Stacey’s kidney recipients (接受人). This little girl was 6 years old at the time of the transplant. She was suffering from Nephrotic Syndrome. There are so many things that I wonder about her. I wonder if she is anything like Stacey. Does she smile all the time? Does she enjoy writing stories and poetry? I do hope that they can contact us!
