I was travelling by the West Coast Express to Mangalore two years ago. Berth(铺位)No. 55, not far from me, was occupied by a middle-aged gentleman. When the train reached Palakkad Junction around 9:00 p.m., a large group of tourists entered with much noise. Just then another middle-aged man from the group declared that he owned Berth 55. He even had a paper given by his travel agent to support himself.
The ticket examiner arrived and told the second man that it was not his berth. “No,” said the second man. “It’s mine.” A policeman from the Railway Protection tried to get the second man leave. But he wouldn’t give in---- and he had the support of his companions.
Fierce argument continued, even long after the train left Palakkad. Then someone even pulled the emergency chain(应急链) as we were leaving Tirur station, four stops after Palakkad. Nobody could sleep and it was getting late.
Suddenly, around midnight, I watched a teenager, a student I am sure, climbed down from an upper berth close to me. “Please take my berth,” he told the second man, who accepted it after a bit of hesitation.
To my great surprise, the student then spread a newspaper on the floor and was soon lost in deep and peaceful sleep. By now everyone was quiet, as if nothing had happened!I’m a 58-year-old biology teacher who has handled two recent generations of students. I was convinced once again that, contray to popular opinions, young people can often be far, far nobler than many older ones. And that’s the hope of our nation.

On my first day of high school, going into math class, I was pointed and laughed at by two of my classmates. I initially thought my fly was open, or that something was stuck in my teeth. But as I took my seat, I heard one student whisper, “Why is a black boy taking Honors?” So, my fly wasn’t open. An honors level class had simply been taken by a student whose skin was brown.
Many people think my clothes should be big enough for me to live in, or expect me to listen to only “black music.” In seventh grade, a group of my classmates fixed their cold stares on my clothes. They called out to me, “Go get your gangsta clothes.” In one of my Spanish classes, the teacher asked me, “Do you like rap music or rock music more?” I replied, “Rock.” The look of shock on my classmates’ faces made me uncomfortable.
Now I still take all Honors courses. I still wear clothes that fit me. My music library covers from rock to pop to techno, and almost everything in between. When it comes to choosing my friends, I am still colorblind. I continue to do my best to work in school in order to reach my goals; and yet, when I look in the mirror, I still see skin of that same brown.
I believe in being myself. I believe that I myself should decide who I am and what actions I take in life. In high school, popularity often depends on your willingness to follow trends. And I’ve been told that it doesn’t get much easier going into adulthood. But the only other option is to sacrifice my personality for the satisfaction and approval of others. This can be appealing, but I’m not going to do that.
1.Why did his classmates laugh at him?
A. His fly was open.
B. Something was stuck in his teeth.
C. He went into the wrong classroom.
D. They had prejudice against him.
2.What are black people usually believed to do?
A. Listen to rap music. B. Wear small clothes.
C. Take Honors courses. D. Attend Spanish classes.
3.What does the underlined word “colorblind” probably mean?
A. Making friends of the same skin color.
B. Having no idea what friends to make.
C. Treating people equally and fairly.
D. Feeling hurt and offended inside.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Following Popular Trends B. Being Content with Myself
C. Having Faith in Skin Color D. Changing My Personality

In 1947, the province Bengal of Pakistan was divided into two parts: the western part became India and the eastern part is known as East Bengal which was later known as East Pakistan. At that time there were many economic, social and cultural problems. In 1948, when government announced Urdu as the national language, it caused the protest among the Bengali speaking majority of Pakistan. The protest got out of control and ended with the death of four protestors of the University of Dhaka who were shot by the police on 21st February, 1952. The students’ deaths during the fight for their mother language are now remembered as The International Mother Language Day (IMLD).
Each year on Feb 21, UNESCO holds the event to draw attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages: dozens of them are disappearing each year. What happens when a language dies out? Something huge is lost -- not just sounds and marks but the way that people make sense of the world and communicate with each other. And it is through language that we have culture and tradition. Kill a language and all this is killed too.
Through IMLD, more people are becoming more aware of the destruction of linguistic (语言的) diversity in modern times and trying to stop it. The Myaamia Project is a kind of effort. This is an attempt to revive (复兴) the language spoken by the Miami and Illinois tribes (部落) of the US. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which formally died out in the 1960s.
This is why we should remember the wise words of Nelson Mandela: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
