Hundreds of students from around the world gathered in New York City last week for the Microsoft Imagine Cup finals. They came to present their ideas for using technology to solve world problems.
Microsoft education director Suzi Levine says the nine-year-old program began mainly as a competition to create technology.
SUZI LEVINE: "When we realized that students really actually want to have a purpose for what they're creating, we introduced the idea of inspiring them with the UN Millennium Development Goals and suggesting that they use those for their muse(灵感). "This past year we also rolled out something called the Imagine Cup Solve This library(创新杯求解计划知识库), where IGOs, NGOs and nonprofits can submit some of the technical challenges that they would like students to consider for their solutions."
Microsoft says over 350,000 high school and college students registered for this year's competition. Judges chose more than four hundred of them to attend the finals.
SUZI LEVINE: "One from Thailand was called NewKrean, where they created a Windows Phone 7 application that allows you to broadcast your location to your social network of friends so that you can be more easily rescued." They named their application Terra.
Suzi Levine says there were also ideas from Egypt inspired by the revolution that overthrew president Hosni Mubarak in February.
SUZI LEVINE: "One was to use Bluetooth as sort of a Twitter equivalent so that if the government shuts down the Internet, you actually can still have a massive social distribution."
Students competed in nine categories. For example, in software design the top prize of twenty-five thousand dollars went to Team Hermes from Ireland. The students developed a device for cars to collect information on road conditions, driving behavior and traffic incidents.
A team from Taiwan's National Tsing Hua University won first place in the embedded(内嵌的) development category. They developed a network of wireless devices to help plot the safest escape routes during a fire.
Next year's awards ceremony will take place in Australia. Registration for Imagine Cup twenty-twelve opened Friday. Also, Microsoft announced plans for a three million dollar program to help Imagine Cup winners further develop their projects.

Two Christmas traditions have come under attack in recent years from environmentalists: Christmas cards and Christmas trees.
Paper cards are seen as wasteful and, for some people, going card-free is another way of going green. They also argue that in a world of e-mail, Skype, Facebook and Twitter, people are in touch all the time anyway; they no longer need the yearly card that connects them with long lost friends. If you want to send Christmas greetings, there are free e-cards, which get the job done with no postage or wasted paper.
However, especially for people who didn’t grow up with e-mail, there is something missing from a Christmas e-mail. The first Christmas cards appeared in London in 1843 and were designed by the same man who had introduced the world’s first postage stamp three years earlier. His name was Sir Henry Cole.
They rose in popularity throughout the 20th century. Many people sent cards that were sold for charity. The most famous of these are the ones sold for UNICEF. In the UK this year, in the three weeks before Christmas, the post office expects to handle 100 million cards every day. Environmental awareness also means that nowadays many people recycle their cards; this helps raise money to plant more trees, as well as recreating more paper.
When we think of trees at Christmas, there is one that immediately springs(跃入)mind---the evergreen tree that people decorate with ornaments and place their presents under. The custom dates back almost a thousand years to Germany. Nowadays 33 to 36 million Christmas trees are produced in America and 50 to 60 million in Europe each year. Some trees are sold live with roots and soil so people can plant them later and reuse them next year.
Some people prefer artificial trees as they are reusable and much cheaper than their natural alternative. However, environmentalists point out that they are made from petroleum (石油) products and so have many pollution issues.
1.What is the main idea of the article?
A.To introduce the history of two typical Christmas traditions.
B.To explain the debate about some Christmas traditions.
C.To analyze how two Christmas traditions grew in popularity.
D.To point out the problems caused by celebrating Christmas.
2.What does the underlined word “They” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?
A.Many people B.Christmas e-mails C.Postage stamps D.Christmas cards
3.Some people suggest getting rid of paper cards because________.
a. they cannot be recycled b. they are not environmentally friendly
c. they are mostly sold for charity d. the e-cards have many advantages over them
e. they are not as necessary as they used to be for people
A.a, b, d B.a, c, d C.b, d, e D.b, c, e
4.What can we conclude from the article?
A.The first Christmas cards were designed earlier than the world’s first stamps.
B.This year has seen a dramatic drop in Christmas card sales.
C.Environmentalists advise people to buy cards that are sold for charity.
D.Growing environmental awareness is encouraging people to recycle their cards.
5.Which of the following statements in TRUE according to the article?
A.There is always a wider Christmas tree market in America than in Europe.
B.The custom of decorating Christmas trees first appeared in Britain.
C.Some people prefer to buy live trees that can be reused next year.
D.Artificial trees are better than natural ones in all aspects.

The college schedule is very different from the traditional high school schedule. 1. In high school, you had to take the US History, which was offered every day at 10:00 a.m. In college, you’ll probably need to take a history class, but you could have 10 choices offered on different days and at different times.
2. For example, you will pick a course that will determine the types of classes you will specialize in. In high school, you have a set curriculum of classes you have to take across all subject areas. 3. During the first two years, you’ll take more general education classes. But during your junior and senior years, you’ll take fewer general education classes.
Another big difference you should be aware of is classes. Now, you’re in school from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. 4. In college, you might have a science class on Mondays and Fridays from 10:10-11:00 a.m. Perhaps you’ll have a Chinese class on Thursdays from 1:15-3:00 p.m.
5. If you go to a large university, your campus will be your home and might take up an entire town. You might see hundreds of students going out to bars every night. Many colleges are home both to academic and social clubs. In high school your stage is regional. In college, your stage is national-and sometimes global.

Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚) in which students either sink or swim, the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to conform (符合) to a stereotype, a US study says. Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.
The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being faded by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study’s author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with specifically “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around. “Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modern style in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to a stereotype that men should be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported.
1.What does Tony Little say about the British education system?
A. It makes girls less emotional than boys.
B. It fails more boys than girls academically.
C. It fails to give boys the attention they need.
D. It places more pressure on boys than on girls.
2.According to Abigail James, boys perform better in single-sex schools because ________.
A. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in
B. boys focus more on their lessons without being disturbed
C. teaching quality is relatively higher than in mixed schools
D. teaching can be designed to suit the characteristics of boys
3.Which of the following is NOT characteristic of boys?
A. Boys have sharper vision. B. Boys enjoy being in charge.
C. Boys like “hands-on” lessons. D. Boys prefer physical activities.
4.What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A. Problems boys may have in mixed schools.
B. Boys’ physical and mental growth in school.
C. Advantages of single-sex education for boys.
D. Boys’ disadvantages over girls in mixed schools.

Microblogging is a broadcast medium in the form of blogging. A microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically much smaller, in both actual size and aggregate file size. Microblogs “allow users to exchange small elements of content such as short sentences, individual images, or video links”.
As with traditional blogging, microbloggers post about topics ranging from the simple, such as "what I'm doing right now," to the thematic(主题的), such as "sports cars.” Commercial microblogs also exist, to promote (促进) websites, services and/or products, and to promote collaboration within an organization.
Some microblogging services offer features such as privacy settings, which allow users to control who can read their microblogs, or other ways of publishing rights besides entering the web-based interface.(界面) These may include text messaging, instant messaging, E-mail, or digital audio.
The first microblogs were known as tumblelogs. The term was invented in a blog post on April 12, 2005. However, by 2006 and 2007, the term microblog came into greater usage for such services provided by Tumblr and Twitter. Other leading social networking websites Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and XING also have their own microblogging features, better known as status updates.
Several studies, especially by Harvard Business School have tried to analyze the usage behavior of Microblogging services. Many of these studies show that for services such as Twitter, there is a small group of active users contributing to most of the activity.
Twitter, Facebook and other microblogging services are also becoming a platform for marketing and public relations, with a sharp growth in the number of social media marketers. The Sysomos study shows that this specific group of marketers on Twitter is much more active than general user population, with 15% following more than 2,000 people.
1.Why is a microblog different from a traditional blog?
A. Because a microblog doesn’t include pictures, but a traditional blog does.
B. Because a microblog doesn’t include videos, but a traditional blog does.
C. Because a microblog has smaller contents than a traditional blog in actual and total file size.
D. Because a microblog can only be written on the cell-phones.
2.What is the meaning of the underlined word “collaboration” in the second paragraph?
A. Competition. B. Discussion. C. Tradition. D. Cooperation
3.Microblogging can protect the following privacy EXCEPT_______.
A. deciding the readers of the microblogs
B. allowing readers to publish their views
C. readers’ deleting what a microblog says
D. deciding whether readers can enter it
4.We can infer from the passage that______.
A. microbloggers always post about the thematic topics instead of the simple ones

In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources, the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decades has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.
Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decades. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil(棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.
Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge public expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from the traditional model to a sustainable one.
The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.
1.The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that .
A. It makes the world warmer
B. it consumes natural resources
C. it brings severe damage to forests
D. it makes growth hard to continue
2.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. China lacks wind and solar energy
B. China is the leader of the low-carbon market
C. High-speed trains are a low-carbon development
D. Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests
3.To full develop the low-carbon markets, government can .
A. cut public expenses
B. forbid carbon emission
C. develop public resources
D. encourage energy conservation
4.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce a new business model
