America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect (影响) American society in many ways — education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society— one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行为)is suitable (合适)at various ages. A person's age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school ,get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the firs time. Public ideas are changing. Many people say, 'I am much younger than my mother - or my father - was at my age.' No one says ‘Act your age’ anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.
1.It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America_________ .
A.has made people feel younger
B.has changed people's social position
C. has changed people's understanding of age
D. has slowed down the country's social development
2.The underlined word ‘one’ refers to_________.
A. a society B. America C. a place D. population
3.‘Act your age’ means people should_________.
A.be active when they are old
B.do the right thing at the right age
C. show respect for their parents young or old
D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age
4.If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ______.
A.normal B.wonderful C.unbelievable D.unreasonable

More than one-third of adults in the United States are obese(肥胖). In fact, over obesity has reached such proportions that one big-city mayor has gone about banning large-sized, sugary soft drinks and the First Lady has been on a campaign to control the dietary offerings in public schools.
Even many adults who do not fit the clinic definition of obesity are still overweight, and a large percentage are looking for the best ways to lose weight.
Reducing pounds largely comes down to the two-sided factors of diet and exercise. Not carrying out the first one enough, and not getting enough of the second one, ends up giving the individual a recipe for being overweight.
Advising someone to eat less and exercise more might be the easiest advice possible, but it’s also, partially, an oversimplification. Dieting has more to do with the types of food you eat than how much you eat. Reduce the amount of red meat in your diet. If you don’t want to eliminate red meat altogether, choose cuts of meat with less fat content. Limit your intake of salt and starches. If you’ve got to have potato chips alongside your sandwich at lunch, choose the baked potato chips that contain less fat than the deep-fried chips. You might find you’re really not sacrificing that much in terms of taste.
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, egg whites, fish and nonfat dairy products will certainly aid in the mission of losing weight. Drink more water and less sugary drinks. If you have to have a soda, a diet soda is a better option, but seltzer is an even better choice than that.
It’s important—if not always easy—to make sure you get at least some physical activity each and every day. If your feet won’t allow for a regular jogging regimen, then make sure you take lots of walks. Next time you need to mail a letter, walk to the mailbox instead of driving. Try to work in a daily walk in your neighborhood.
1. You should when you want to lose weight
A. try not to fit the clinic definition of obesity
B. diet as well as exercise enough
C. get little exercise every day
D. focus your attention on diet only
2.The First Lady has started a movement to .
A. raise people’s awareness of healthy diet
B. control the public school dietary supplying
C. ban the sugary soft drinks
D. realise the importance of dieting
3. What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?
A.We must keep far away from fat and ignore our taste.
B.The simplest and best way to lose weight is to eat and exercise more.
C.We should remove the red meat in our diet completely to reduce weight.
D.When it comes to diet, no one needs to starve themselves in order to lose weight.
4.The last paragraph is mainly about .
A. walk B. diet

China is now sending more college students to study in the United States than any other country. A new report shows a 23 percent increase in the number of Chinese students coming to the U.S.
The latest edition of the annual Institute of International Education(IIE)and another US institute found a 5 percent rise in the number of international university students in the US compared to one year ago. There are now over 157, 000 Chinese students at U.S. colleges and universities.
Aisa accounted for four of the top five countries and regions to take advantage of the US higher education system. “Increased numbers of students from China, particularly at the undergraduate level, largely accounts for the growth this past year,” the report stated. “They really enroll in a full range of US higher education,” said Peggy Blumenthal, senior counselor to the president of IIE, the group that made the report. “20 years ago, students from China only knew of a handful of US insitiutions, but now, they are enrolling in our community colleges, in our small liberal arts institutions, in the research universities. Really spread across the country,” she said.
Chinese mainland was in the number one spot, while India was the number two country of origin. South Korea was third and Canada was number four. China’s Taiwan held the number five spot. Saudi Arabia was in sixth with a 44-percent increase, while Japan was seventh, down 14 percent.
Blumenthal attributes the increase in the number of Chinese students heading to US colleges to limited university places in China, as well as a feeling from students and their parents than they want a “unique” educational experience. China’s family planning policy, says Blumenthal, has also meant that families can concentrated resources on a single child.
The University of California at Los Angeles has one of the largest Asian student populations of any college in the United States.
1.Which ranked the third place sharing US higher education?
A.Saudi Arabia B.South Korea C.Canada D.India
2.Why is the number of Chinese students going to the US increasing?
A.The US colleges are better than those in China.
B.Each family in China has only one child.
C.China lacks enough educational resources.
D.Chinese students can enter varieties of US colleges.
3.Which of the following is right according to Peggy Blumenthal?
A.The number of Chinese students going to the US has increased by 23%.
B.The University of California has contributed to Asian education greatly.
C.Chinese student populations in the US mainly consist of undergraduates.
D.Chinese students know more about US higher education than before.
4.The best title for the passage can be________.
A.Chinese College Students Rush to US Schools
B.The Large Number of Chinese Students in the US
C.Chinese Students Make Up Largely Foreign Students in the US
D.Asian Middle School Students in the US Universities

Age has its privileges in America, and one of the more prominent of them is the senior citizen discount. Anyone who has reached a certain age — in some cases as low as 55 — is automatically entitled to dazzling array of price reductions at nearly every level of commercial life. Eligibility is determined not by one’s need but by the date on one’s birth certificate. Practically unheard of a generation ago, the discounts have become a routine part of many businesses — as common as color televisions in motel rooms and free coffee on airliners.
People with gray hair often are given the discounts without even asking for them; yet, millions of Americans above age 60 are healthy and solvent(有支付能力的). Businesses that would never dare offer discounts to college students or anyone under 30 freely offer them to older Americans. The practice is acceptable because of the widespread belief that “elderly” and “needy” are synonymous (同义的). Perhaps that once was true, but today elderly Americans as a group have a lower poverty rate than the rest of the population. To be sure, there is economic diversity within the elderly, and many older Americans are poor. But most of them aren’t.
It is impossible to determine the impact of the discounts on individual companies. For many firms, they are a stimulus to revenue. But in other cases the discounts are given at the expense, directly or indirectly, of younger Americans. Moreover, they are a direct irritant in what some politicians and scholars see as a coming conflict between the generations.
Generational tensions are being fueled by continuing debate over Social Security benefits, which mostly involve a transfer of resources from the young to the old. Employment is another sore point. Buoyed (支持) by laws and court decisions, more and more older Americans are declining the retirement dinner in favor of staying on the job — thereby lessening employment and promotion opportunities for younger workers.
Far from a kind of charity they once were, senior citizen discounts have become a formidable economic privilege to a group with millions of members who don’t need them.
It no longer makes sense to treat the elderly as a single group whose economic needs deserve priority over those of others. Senior citizen discounts only enhance the myth that older people can’t take care of themselves and need special treatment; and they threaten the creation of a new myth, that the elderly are ungrateful and taking for themselves at the expense of children and other age groups. Senior citizen discounts are the essence of the very thing older Americans are fighting against — discrimination by age.

Since 1970, North America has lost more than 2.9 billion birds, according to a study recently published in the journal Science. In less than half a century, the bird population has declined by some 29 percent, or more than 1 in 4 birds. For the first time, researchers have discovered that rare species aren't the only birds suffering population loss. In fact, common birds-including beloved backyard friends like sparrows and blackbirds-are taking the biggest hit.
The new study used nearly 50 years of data collected largely by bird watchers and citizen scientists. "A total of 419 native migratory species experienced a net loss of 2.5 billion individuals," the study says. More than 90 percent of the total loss can be found among just 12 bird families. Some of these widespread birds can thrive almost anywhere. The large-scale loss of these hardy birds reveals they're struggling to survive throughout the world/
Birds are considered indicator species because they're crucial to ecosystems, and their populations anticipate the environment's health. Birds are "amazingly efficient" at spreading seeds. Birds also keep insect populations in check. Even the smallest bird helps control the spread of plants or insects.
The new study, however, identifies the losses without knowing all the causes. Scientists do identify habitat loss as the biggest challenge. Climate change, disrupted migration patterns and pesticide use are also major factors. Industrial agriculture may present a bigger challenge. The species disappearing most rapidly—sparrows, blackbirds and larks—are associated with agriculture. In recent decades, agriculture has grown to produce more food, but cleared landscapes have become unlivable for birds.
“We need to change the way we grow food. Birds are signaling that we are doing it wrong, "as the study says. The study offers the example of the 1990s effort to switch to no-till farming, which reduced greenhouse gases and soil erosion(侵蚀). “Farmers are innovators. And they've done it before. This is a great opportunity to have a huge impact on birds."
1.What's the study mainly about?
A.The climate issues. B.The disappearing birds.
C.The agricultural problems. D.The environmental protection.
2.How is the second paragraph mainly developed?
A.By listing figures. B.By giving examples
C.By analyzing reasons. D.By making comparisons.
3.What's the main reason behind the birds' habitat loss?
A.Climate change. B.Greenhouse gases.
C.Industrial agriculture. D.Disrupted migration patterns.
4.What does the study suggest as a solution?
A.Producing more food. B.Clearing more landscapes.
C.Reducing the use of pesticide. D.Adopting new means of farming.
