Created in 1998 by Casey and Shelley Black, the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center focuses on not only rescuing young abandoned wolves but educating the public. Unlike other centers, you can actually walk with the wolves and have exciting, hands﹣on interaction with them here. And so, we gathered one late winter morning to learn, prepare and walk.
Scrappy and Flora, our wolves that day, were brought to the center when only a few days old. "They lived in the house with us for the first several months. We treated them like human babies, fed them and slept with them," said Shelley. So, they are totally used to people. However, these are wild animals. For that reason, Shelley and Casey explained, the walk is totally on the wolf's terms. "We don't approach them, but if they come up to us, we can touch them. "
With all this in mind, we headed for the woods. We were walking on a logging road when suddenly,Flora, all 60 pounds of her, hurried up to me and raised up on her legs. She was almost as tall as me. As she leaned in, put her huge muddy paws on my shoulders and sniffed my face, apparently she was saying hello in wolf talk.
We walked farther, maybe half a mile, while Scrappy and Flora dashed in and out of the woods stopping to occasionally roll in the snow, dig for this or that and just play. Then we all headed into the trees to a picturesque stream where the wolves splashed, drank and had a great time.
One could point out that this whole adventure was staged and quite artificial. But the purpose, Casey and Shelley said,is to explain the wolves' place in the environment and, primarily,to let people know wolves don' t have to be universally feared﹣they really don' t hide secretly in the woods just waiting to eat people, but they' d rather avoid people, for the most part.
1.How is the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center different from others?
A. It trains and educates wild wolves.
B. It aims to rescue young abandoned wolves.
C. It raises wolves for commercial purposes.
D. It allows visitors to take a walk with wolves.
2.What can be inferred from Shelley and Casey's explanation in Paragraph 2?
A. The walk can be potentially dangerous.
B. The wolves have lost all their wildness.
C. People should get close to the wolves actively.
D. The wolves can read people's mind like human babies.
3.Why did Flora behave like that when she saw the author on the logging road?
A. To express curiosity.
B. To show friendliness.
C. To attract attention.
D. To seek companionship.
4.Why do Casey and Shelley organize such an adventure?
A. To advertise the center.
B. To publicize wolf hunting.
C. To promote environmental protection.
D. To clarify some conventional views of wolves.

Does your ideal vacation include going skiing across frozen ice, spying the northern lights, and playing in the snow? Then you’ll want to skate straight to these winter spots.
Fairbanks, Alaska
Alaska is a good choice for a great winter getaway. For winter fun, head to Fairbanks, where you can stay at a new cottage with glass-ceiling domes for aurora (极光) viewing in comfort and then head out ice fishing and snowmobiling. Want even more adventure? Consider a guided adventure that combines northern lights, cross-country skiing, and dog mushing.
Kirkenes, Norway
The Kirkenes Snow hotel here welcomes visitors to its ice-sculpted rooms. Besides, you can jump on a sled (雪橇) pulled by dogs or bring your appetite for a King Crab Safari. Another quick sled trip and you’ve reached a cozy cottage where crab claws as long as your forearm are served up minutes after being pulled from the cold waters, tasting of salt water. A rich reward for braving the cold.

Watching the Northern Lights(北极光)shining on the sky’s natural canvas may be on your list already, but be prepared to up the money.
A developer is creating a floating, snowflaked - shaped(雪花形状的)glass hotel from which guests can stare in fear at the Northern Lights from their beds. The project is called Krystall. Eighty –six luxury rooms will be covered within a glass structure alongside conference rooms and a spa, all of which is only accessible by boat.
The stationery hotel will be built near in northern Norway reportedly between bays. It will be constructed, in pieces, in dry docks(码头), before being fit together on location.
Explaining the physics and design of the hotel, Koen Olthuis, Dutch architect and founder of Waterstudio, a specialist in floating structures, said: “The floating base is very big and because of that also very stable. You will not notice any movement. Different to any vessel this hotel is a floating building and will not move. The shape provides most of the stability but cables(缆绳)are used to take away any speed.”
“Same look and feel as a land based hotel but then on the most beautiful spot on the water. The hotel is not connected to land so all the things will be provided by boats.”
According to Mr Olthuis, who wouldn’t tell the actual cost of the project, the budget is 15 percent more than it would have been if it were built on land. He said that an important thing to the hotel’s construction was for its creation to be “scarless” on the perfect environment surrounding it.
“We call it a scarless development. If you take it away after a hundred years or so it will not leave any physical footprint. That is the only way to bring developments to such a valuable and beautiful marine environment in Norway.”
It is hoped that the hotel will be “self-supporting and sustainable” using top of the range technology, helping to support the “growing eco-tourism market.”
“Dutch Docklands has learned to live with the water instead of fighting it,” the firm states. “Floating houses are common in the Netherlands but we took that technology abroad and scale it up in size.”
1.According to the text, Krystall is stable because ________.
A. it is linked to the land with cables. B. it is fixed together on location.
C. it is built in the form of snow flakes. D. it has the same look as any vessel.
2.While building Krystall, waterstudio concerns most about ________.
A. how to keep it existing for a hundred years.
B. how to cause no damage to each piece.
C. how to build it with a lot less money.
D. how to make it environmentally friendly.
3.What Mr Olthuis said in the last paragraph implies that ________.
A. The Dutch developed a sense of adapting to nature.
B. eco-tourism is a growing market in the Netherlands.
C. it needs technology to build floating houses.
D. it is common to see house floating on water.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Build a floating house to live in.
B. View the Northern Lights in a floating hotel.
C. Live with water in a glass hotel in Norway.
D. Use the Northern Lights in a glass hotel.

In the winter of 1910, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh stepped off a train in the northern Chinese city of Harbin. He was there to solve a medical mystery, at great personal risk. Over the past few months, an unknown disease had swept along the railways of northeast China, killing 99.9% of its victims. The Qing Imperial court had sent the Cambridge-educated Dr. Wu north to stop the epidemic.
When Dr Wu arrived in Harbin on Christmas Eve, 1910, he carried little in the way of medical instruments and had only one assistant. One of Wu' s first acts upon arrival was to set up special quarantine(隔离) units and to order lockdowns to stop infected persons from traveling and spreading the disease. He had teams check households for possible cases, and even managed to convince authorities to completely close the railways in the early weeks of 1911. Of particular concern was the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, which had become a great annual migration of people traveling across the country to see their families.
Thanks to Dr. Wu's efforts, the number of plague victims began to die down, and by March 1, 1911, the epidemic was fully contained. The pneumonic (肺炎的) plague outbreak of 1910-1911 lasted nearly four months, affected five provinces and six major cities, and accounted for over 60,000 deaths. It is clear that without the brave and decisive actions taken by Dr. Wu, it could have been much worse. Had the epidemic gone unchecked, allowing holiday rail passengers to spread the disease to the rest of China could have meant a catastrophic loss of life and possibly a global health crisis.
In April 1911, Dr. Wu chaired an International Plague Conference in Shenyang, attended by scientists from 11 counties including the United States, Great Britain, Russia, Japan and France. They praised Dr. Wu for his handling of the 1910-1911 outbreak. For a time, Dr. Wu was the world's most famous plague fighter, a title be defended in a malaria epidemic in China in 1919, and a return of plague in 1921.
1.What was Dr Wu's mission in 1910?
A.To take personal risk.
B.To end an epidemic.
C.To provide medical education.
D.To investigate the number of victims.
2.Which of Dr Wu's acts stopped the disease from spreading nationwide?
A.Setting up special quarantine units around the country.
B.Treating infected persons with his medical instruments.
C.Checking households himself for possible cases.
D.Convincing authorities to close the railways.
3.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.The disease worsened after Mach 1, 1911.
B.60,000 would have died without Dr Wu's efforts.
C.A global health crisis followed the 1910-1911 outbreak.
D.The plague broke out again about 10 years later.
4.What can be the best title of the text?
A.A Plague Fighter
B.A Global Health Crisis
C.The Beginning of the Chinese Public Health System
D.A Plague Outbreak

Deep in the forest in the northern part of the Republic of Congo, scientists have made a surprising discovery.Researchers discovered more than 125,000 critically endangered western lowland gorillas.
In the 1980’s,scientists estimated that the total population of western lowland gorillas in Central Africa was fewer than 100,000.Since then, however, the scientists believed this number had been reduced by at least half. They thought the animals were being killed off by hunters and diseasses, especially the deadly Ebola virus.
The new population count was the result of intensive work by the Wildlife Conservation Society and scientists of the Republic of Congo. They searched rainforests, looking for gorilla nests.Gorillas build beds, or nests, for sleeping each night. The researchers use the number of nests they find to help estimate the local gorilla population. They found some forests had population densities that were among the highest ever recorded. The researchers studied an area of 47,000 square kilometers.
The scientists say the higher number of gorilla is the result of efforts by the Republic of Congo to take care of its protected areas. The gorillas have also done well because they live in areas far away from people. And they have plenty to eat.Wildlife Conservation Society president Steven Sanderson said the success of the gorillas is the proof that humans can help protect animal species in danger of disappearing.
Western lowland gorillas are one of four recognized gorilla subspecies(亚种)。 Other subspecies include mountain gorillas, eastern lowlang gorillas, and Cross River gorillas. The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers all of the subspecies to be critically endangered, except for the eastern lowland gorillas. That subspecies is considered endangered.

2.What’s the researchers’attitude towards the present western lowland gorilla population? (No more than seven words)
