It’s necessary to use different ways to communicate for different purposes. Study, made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in New York, has found that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails.
Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communication diary for a week. In it they noted the number of conversations or e-mail exchanges they had lasting more than 10 minutes, and how many lies they told. Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14% of e-mails, 21% of instant messages, 27% of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37% of phone calls.
His results, to be presented at the conferences on human computer interaction in Vienna, Austria, in April, have surprised psychologists.
Hancock says it is very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time. People appear to be afraid to lie when they know that they will be responsible for what they have said in the conversation. This is why fewer lies appear in e-mail than on the phone.
People are even more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call. Many lies are sudden or immediate responses to demands that they don’t expect.”
Hancock hopes his research will help many a company work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. For instance, the phone might be the best medium for selling their products where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But given his results, work assessment, where honesty is regarded as more important than others, might be best done using e-mail.

In addition to self-awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality — independent will — that really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities.
The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic(给人深刻印象的) evidence to the value, the power of the independent will.
But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it’s usually not the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps(自立自强的) effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.
The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It’s our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves, to “walk our talk.”
Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline (training to be self-controlled), carrying it out.
Discipline obtains from belief—belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的) purpose, to a long-term or short term goal that must be carried out.
In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.

Farmers and gardeners have long used greenhouses to extend the growing season in cold weather. Now, hoop houses are gaining popularity. Some hoop houses are rounded; others are shaped more like a traditional house.
A hoop house is basically a metal frame covered with plastic or other all-weather material. A common design looks like a high tunnel. Unlike a greenhouse, which uses a heating system, a hoop house is heated by the warmth of the sun.
Now, the United States Department of Agriculture has announced a program to help farmers who want to build hoop houses. The department has been supporting a project in Michigan. That state has a short growing season. As part of the research project, nine farmers were given materials and trained how to build and use a hoop house. The results showed that well-managed hoop houses can grow high-quality crops.
However, crops are not the only things that grow well. The research found that weeds grow faster in a hoop house. Weeding (除草), seeding and watering requires at least as much work as crops grown in the open air. The researchers also advise growers to add compost(堆肥) material to the soil in hoop houses to build nutrients.
Eliot Coleman is an organic farmer and a writer in Maine who has helped popularize the idea of four-season farming. His ideas about hoop houses sounded good to John Biernbaum in the Horticulture(园艺)Department at Michigan State University.
Professor Biernbaum tried hoop houses on the Student Organic Farm at Michigan State and had success. Project director David Conner says it was a "test drive(试车)" for the research on private farms. The agricultural economist points to the demand for locally grown crops. "People are hungry for good, fresh vegetables," he says.

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product;the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external(外在的)result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a promotion, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast(对照),the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since by definition it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have, and their caution or courage,as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try,new challenges to accept.
In order to grow,to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks,to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so,then we tend to take more chances and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we're shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate,to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we are slow to adapt to change or that we're not smart enough to deal with a new challenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

True friends are rare to come by these days. Even if you believe you’ve connected with someone, how do you really know he is a true friend? And often you will find that someone who you thought you could trust may have let you down. There are ways you can know if a friendship is true and how you can hold onto that friend.
A true friend is someone who will be there for you no matter what happens. Through good times and bad times, they will stand by you. They will accept you for who you are without trying to change you,and they will be there to help you grow in new ways.
Trust is another important aspect. A true friend will keep your secrets. They will be honest and be someone you can depend on. They will listen and be someone you know you can talk things over with, even if they may not have advice to share with you.
Friendship is a two-way street though. To find true friends and keep them, you must in turn be the same as well. Be there for them in their hard times and share the good times with them. Be someone your friends can depend on as well and offer them the same things they give to you. A friendship will fall apart fast if only one person is giving and putting all the effort in. If you are the only one making an effort, be honest.
There will be barriers in the road but that is the test of true friendship. If it can survive those barriers,it will be stronger and better than ever. St Thomas Aquinas said, “There is nothing on this earth more prized than friendship" and it holds true.

From its energetic samba music to its die-hard soccer fans, Brazil has long been known as a nation of passion. But the country also offers amazing scenery and rich culture. Since Brazilian Culture Month is being held in a tour exhibition in China in September, let’s take the opportunity to explore this wonderful place.
Brazil is the largest and most populous country in South America. The Amazon in its north is the world’s largest jungle. The country’s wilderness is home to a variety of plants and animals. The great Iguazu Falls are the pearls of this natural paradise (天堂).
But the great landscape is not the only thing Brazilians take pride in. The colors green and yellow might make most people think of Brazil’s soccer team rather than the national flag. Soccer is more than sport; it’s a way of life. The World Cup brings Brazilians together. Interestingly, the general elections in Brazil are usually held during the same year as the World Cup Political parties try to take advantage of the patriotic(爱国的) enthusiasm(热情) created by soccer to inspire enthusiasm for politics.
For the next couple of years, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second largest city, will grab the world’s attention. It will host the World Cup in 2014 and two years later, the Olympics. For the first time in their 120 years, the Olympic Games will be held in South America when they come to Brazil.
Of course, no Brazilian celebration is complete without the samba. The most traditional dance of the country stands out every February at the Rio Carnival, which is one of the world’s biggest.
“Brazil has left its second-class nation status,” former Brazilian President said in 2009 after Rio was awarded the 2016 Olympics. “Brazil’s growing economy, supported by oil and aircraft factories, has made it more than a nation of samba and the beaches and the emotional soul of soccer.”

It’s every student’s dream to do well in the national college entrance examination and enter a good university. In the eyes of students and parents, a good university should have a high ranking, and the employment rate of its graduates should be high. But be careful! The employment rate they tell you might not always be true.
Recently, people created a Chinese phrase “bei jiuye”, which has become popular on the Internet almost overnight across China. The word “bei” has a grammatical use in Chinese: it has a function similar to the passive voice in English. But now people often use it to express their doubts about something. Here, the phrase “bei jiuye” has the literal meaning of “to be hired”, but people understand that it really means “to be hired without one’s knowledge” or “be hired for jobs that may not exist at all”.
The story of “bei jiuye” goes like this. Zhao Dongdong, a graduate of a university in Shanxi province, was surprised to find that he got a job from a company he never applied to, which he wasn’t even sure was a real place. On his last day of graduation ceremonies, he was surprised to come across the employment contract.
“God! At that time, I had not landed a job yet, but they gave me an employment contract! I wondered who on earth signed the contract with the company.” When Zhao made a phone call to the company to check it out, no one answered. He was not the only one in his college who was “hired” for a job that did not exist. One of his classmates signed a contract with a company called Xi’an Beilin Industrial Corporation, which could not be found on the Internet either. In the end, it turned out that the college had faked the contract to make it seem like the employment rate for new graduates was higher than that. By doing this, the college could build up a “good” reputation that could help it attract new students. “Bei jiuye” is just one of many hot “bei” words on the Internet. See some of them in “Bonus”. The use of “bei” is a satirical (讽刺的) way for the public to express its helplessness and criticize abuses of power, some people say. People also use “bei” words to bring attention to social problems, hoping they will be noticed by authorities.
