You’ve probably heard of Marco Polo, but how much do you actually know about him and his incredible journey? Marco was the original travel writer, whose trade contacts with Asia changed Europe, opening it up to new ideas and cultures.
Marco Polo was born in the Venetian Republic around 1254.At the time, Venice was one of the most powerful trading cities in the world, and was ruled as an independent city state.Marco’s mother died when he was young, so he was brought up by his aunt and uncle. When Marco was born, his brother (Maffeo) and father (Niccolo), who were successful merchants, were away on a trading voyage. They didn’t get back until Marco was about 15.
In 1271, Niccolo and Maffeo set off again for Asia, this time taking Marco with them.On a previous journey they’d met Kublai Khan (the Yuan Dynasty), and they were keen to establish trade links between Kublai’s empire and Venice. The Polos sailed across the Mediterranean to Acre (now in northern Israel). Then, they traveled by camel to the port of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.Their plan was to sail to China but they couldn’t find any good boats. So, they continued the journey overland, finally meeting Kublai Khan at his summer palace in Xanadu, about 275 kms north of modern Beijing.Marco was now probably 21 years ol
The journey had taken over three years.
The Polos had learnt a great deal about the world during their travels and so Kublai employed Marco as a government official. This gave Marco the opportunity to travel around much of Kublai’s empire in China. In fact, Kublai found the Polos so useful that he was unwilling to let them return home. However, in 1292, the Polos eventually left, sailing from China and ending up in Hormuz again. The journey was extremely dangerous: of the 600 travelers who set off, only 18 arrived in Hormuz, including all three of the Polo family.
The Polos finally returned to Venice in 1295, twenty-four years after setting off. They had traveled 24,000 kms.By this time Venice was at war with Genoa, its trade rival.Unfortunately for Marco, he was captured by the Genoese and imprisione
However, he used his time as a prisoner to write a book about his family’s travels: II Milione (known as The Travels of Marco Polo in English). It was the first book to tell Europeans about China and the East.No original copy survives, but there are several versions of it.Marco’s writings influenced many other travelers, most notably Christopher Columbus, who carried a copy of II Milione with him on his voyage in search of Asia.
After his release from prison in 1299, Marco rejoined his father and uncle in Venice. The family were now even wealthier than before thanks to the many treasures they’d brought back from the East.Marco financed many more trading journeys but never left the city again. He died in 1324 and was buried in the church of San Lorenzo in Venice.

Why should most of us hate spiders when we know deeply how much good they do? Is it because they somehow seem so alien? After all, what other land creatures on earth have eight legs? What other creatures spin silk webs in which to catch and wrap their prey to preserve it for the future, much as we put food in the fridge to eat later? I do not personally suffer from arachnophobia, the name given to an abnormal fear of spiders, but I can't say that I like the little beasts. However, some people do, and they actually keep them as pets!
There is a wide variety of spiders in the world. In fact it has been estimated that there are some 35,000 species——from little "money spiders" that live in your back garden, to the "black widow spider", and the “tarantula” ,the spider that is now sometimes kept as a pet.
A tarantula can be any one of a large hairy spiders family and there are about 800 species of them. While experts can tell the difference between species at a glance, most are usually described in reference books as “rather slowly" with “a strong bite which may be poisonous”. They are covered with hairs which can cause a rash (皮疹)if they are handled.
No one has calculated the number of human deaths caused by a bite from a tarantula perhaps because it has never happened, or happened so rarely, and indeed a tarantula will do no harm to anyone if handled correctly. Their disgusting image cannot belie their gentle nature but experts tell us not to handle a tarantula without expert advice.
Tarantulas are popular as pets and it requires very little space to maintain them in excellent condition. They should be kept singly in a glass container, which need not be very large but should have a layer of stones in the bottom. They feed on insects, and while young tarantulas eat twice a week, adults will often eat no more than once every 10 days.
You might like the idea of keeping a tarantula, but personally I am content with just watching them at a distance.

Sleep and Teens--Biology and Behavior
How much sleep do teens need? And how much sleep are they realistically getting? Based on current data, most teens need about 9-plus hours to have the best or most suitable sleep night. 1.
Many factors combine to decrease sleep in adolescents. We can think in general of two major factors: biological, the brain processes that regulate the amount and timing of sleep, and behavior, all the psychological, parental, societal, cultural features of teen’s life.
2.These changes lay the ground work for the biological night to occur later during the teen years than before. Circadian Rhythms (daily biological clock) seems to slow down as young people progress through the middle school years. At the same time, the sleep pressure system appears to change in a way that makes it easier to stay awake longer, though without changing the amount of sleep that is needed.
Moreover, many teens have a "technological playground" in their bedrooms: television, computer with 24/7 Internet access, telephones, electronic game stations, MP3 players, and so forth. These technologies provide instant and constant contact with peers. Societal and media pressure to consume these technologies is now higher than ever. Yet society also requires that teens go to school at a time of day that is at odds with their biological and social lives. So we see teens turn to caffeine, late-night Internet and cramming in activity after activity as a means to keep awake. 3.
Problems emerge for lack of sleep. 4.For some, grades begin to suffer as they struggle to keep awake during class and while doing homework. And others may simply feel moody, never knowing how to feel or do their best. Worse still, many teens suffer from both physical and mental illness.
5.The earlier teens can start this good sleep habit, the easier it will be for them to stay healthy, happy and smart.
A. Sleep experts recommend teens keep consistent sleep and wake schedule.
B. Teens may schedule sleep like any other daily activity and make sleep a priority.
C. Then they are trapped into a terrible situation where they would never get enough sleep.
D. The sleep-wake bio-regulatory factors appear to change significantly during adolescence.
E. Some teenagers struggle to wake up in the morning, often resulting in late or missed school.
F. Teens may be driven to things that can wake them up because they'll fall asleep if they do not.
G. However, it is indicated that most teens fall short of this goal, many by a considerable amount.
