A new exhibit at a California museum provides visitors with a modem version of the ancient Chinese art style, literally “shan shui hua”. The show is at the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles. It is called Lightscapes. The works show scenes of mountains, rivers and sometimes waterfalls. Chinese artists have been creating the brush and ink works for more than 1,000 years.
Artists Nick Dong and Chi-Tsung Wu found ways to connect the new, digital generation to this traditional form of art. Their works get the essence (本质) of the style in a new way. The exhibit forces the viewers to slow down and experience a different world. That was also one of the goals of shan shui hua artists from long ago.
Dong said, “Actually, all these artists want to create a world where they can hide themselves. And the world can help them avoid or escape from the reality. So, they create a mountain and imagine they could live there.”
One of the works involves a slowly moving light directed at clear plastic boxes on a wall. The piece, created by Wu, is called Crystal City. Wu said, “If we see this through the light, from a different perspective, we could see there’s another world behind that.” That other world Wu noted is the shadows that look more solid than the plastic boxes. Wu said Crystal City is the representative of the modem digital age.
To view Dong’s representation of Heaven, one has to step into a room filled with mirrors from floor to ceiling. There is a small round seat in the middle of the room. Dong said, “Once you’ve entered the installation (装置), at first you’ll see a lot of your reflections. But once you sit down, you touch off the mechanism (机关) of the room. The mirrors actually start to reflect, and you yourself will disappear within the space.”

Why do Chinese people love hot pot so much? As the winter months are coining in, more and people are silting around a table, enjoying this kind of traditional meal. I find myself wondering what it U about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1,000 years. What makes it a Chinese food favorite? It seems that the answer lies beyond the dish itself.
Hot pot isn’t just designed to keep you warm during the cold months; it’s also a social experience. It’s a “theater” cooked food that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding some foods to the hot pot.
Hot pot is eaten over two to three hours. For this reason, it is often considered an evening’s entertainment, and a time to spend with friends and families. However, many westerners would be put off by the idea of other people sticking chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK, we tend to have our own shares, although the experience is still a social one.
A similar experience to the hot pot can be found in Korean barbecue restaurants, which lei you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat done however they want.
For most westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is very strange. But having a go, I find it’s now one of my favorite meals in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this was also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, I am sitting around with my good friends, eating and drinking. For me it’s like a dinner party where my taste buds and my appetite are equally satisfied in the warm company of friends.
1.What is the main reason why hoi pot is popular in China?
A. It has a history of over 1,000 years.
B. It is a fun social experience.
2.We can conclude from the article that British people generally .

B. prefer a Korean barbecue to Chinese hot pot
C. don’t like sharing food with others in restaurants
D. don’t mind the smell of food staying on their clothes
3.How long do people spend in enjoying the traditional meal?
A. More than four hours. B. Over one hour.

The TV series, The Longest Day in Chang'an, which was shown on Chinese online platforms last summer became a hit soon. Since then, it has been shown on partnering streaming platforms and TV networks abroad. Some websites overseas also offered the program to their users paying for it— the first time a Chinese series was broadcast as paid content abroad.
"I was amazed by the overseas audience's love for this show," Cao Dun, director of The Longest Day in Chang'an, told Bejing Review. "I was worried that they wouldn't understand the complex political structure of the Tang dynasty. But in reality the show is prompting foreign audiences to research Tang dynasty's history to better understand the plot. "
The unique culture in ancient China is not a barrier but a bridge to connect with foreign audiences. In the TV series, every figure is given enough space to flesh out his or her character. Telling stories of ordinary Chinese people that resonate (引起共鸣) with the audience might be the way to communicate with the world. "The success of the TV series shows that beauty is a universal language crossing borders," he told Beijing Review.
His ambition is to distinguish Chinese dramas from the TV shows in the rest of the world. "The TV series is a step in my plan to tell Chinese stories to the world," Cao said. "After describing the impressive beauty of the Tang dynasty, I am looking for several plays that tell stories of today's China. I don’t want to copy any country's production. Chinese dramas have to be built on our rich culture and Chinese people's everyday life," Cao added.
1.What do we know about the TV series?
A.It was put on overseas, when first released.
B.It can be appreciated for free.
C.It is about the development of the Tang dynasty.
D.It was very popular once it was shown.
2.What does the underlined word "prompting" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Requiring. B.Reminding.
C.Encouraging. D.Informing.
3.What made the TV series a success?
A.Stories of ordinary people. B.Recognition of beauty.
C.Diversity of Chinese culture. D.Personalities of every figure.
4.What is Cao Dun’s ambition?
A.To tell Chinese stories to the world. B.To make a successful TV series.
C.To show China’s different nationalities. D.To learn the ancient political structure.

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) is an ancient form of healthcare that dates back over 2,500 years, which aims to prevent or cure disease by maintaining or restoring yinyang balance. Fundamentally, TCM seeks to restore a dynamic balance between two complementary forces, yin(passive) and yang(active) . According to the yinyang theory, a person is healthy when harmony exists between these two forces; illness, on the other hand, results from a breakdown in the balance.
TCM practitioners(从业者) look to treat the root cause of disease and take a holistic approach to helping people experience complete recovery without the use of conventional drugs. TCM is “holistic” because it takes into account all aspects of a patient's life, rather than just several obvious symptoms. TCM practitioners view the body as a complex system, rather than separate organs. They use smell, hearing, touch, and pulse diagnosis(诊断) to discover the source of an unbalanced health condition. In addition, the practitioner typically makes use of what is known as five phases(wuxing) . Using the five-phase theory, the practitioner can create a plan for treatment that might contain such components as herbs, lifestyle changes, and foods for recovery.
Over the past several decades, TCM has been going global. It is now practiced in 183 countries and regions with 86 of them signing agreements with China to promote it. More and more medical schools are now recognizing the importance of training students and staff in “mind-body” practices that emphasize disease prevention and holistic treatments. A study of 3,200 physicians, conducted by Health Products Research, indicates that more than 50 percent of physicians in the U. S. planned to begin or increase use of TCM.
1.What is the most important to stay healthy according to TCM?
A.Having as little yin as possible. B.Ensuring much yang all the time.
C.Staying away from conventional drugs. D.Keeping the balance between yin and yang.
2.Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “holistic”?
A.optimistic B.dull
C.systematic D.passive
3.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The globalization of TCM. B.The history of TCM.
C.The significance of TCM. D.The benefits of TCM.
4.On what theories is TCM based according to this passage?
A.Practitioner and patient. B.Yinyang and wuxing.
C.Diagnosis and cure. D.Prevention and treatment.
