But information technology is being used to try to stop the problem. Jemima Mwafigu is a 34-year-old businesswoman who sells products like perfume. But in the first year of running her business, she found it hard to keep customers because of counterfeit goods.
Ms. Mwafigu says her business has improved since she began using a smart phone application called Barcode (条码) Scanner. The app is used to authenticate (验证) products. It checks to make sure the products are not counterfeit.
“With this application I'm able to scan the bar codes of each perfume and instantly I get the production date, the expiration date and I'm able to know the safety,” she says. “That way, I have confidence in selling to my customers.”
In 2010, Kenya created the Anti-Counterfeit Agency, or ACA, to fight against illegal trade. The ACA has successfully asked government officials for stronger punishments for counterfeiters.
Agnes Karingu is the agency’s acting director for research and awareness. She says the ACA is trying to stay one step ahead of those making fake goods.
“We are also looking into IT solutions where we can be able to use SMS programs, bar codes and information sharing,” she says. “The end users of the products will actually be able to get the authentication information, and this information comes back to ACA and intellectual property rights holders.”
The agency is testing another program called Allvirtuous. The application is another way to find out if a product is real or not by scanning its barcode. The barcode information is sent to a database. Then a result is sent back to the app.

While an entire month free of homework or tests may sound too good to be true, that is exactly what the students at Sturenskolan School in Boden, Sweden were treated to in April. What’s more, if the results of the experiment prove encouraging, starting 2019, the middle schoolers will never have to worry about after-school work or tests, aside from the national examinations, which are compulsive for students across the country.

While in the past students were primarily subjected to memorizing facts, learning today is all about reflection and analysis. Sirkka is not the only one who believes after-school work does not help students learn. In March 2018, another principal in Canada also decided to do away with homework. They hope parents will spend the extra time reading to their kids.
While the long-term impact of the recent decisions made by the two educators remains to be seen, the experiment has already proved successful in Finland which has done away with homework, grades, and even teaching by subjects for many years. Yet, Finnish students always rank high in the PISA(Programme for International Student Assessment) tests especially in math and science but they have the least homework! NEW YORK, May 19—A new, more destructive version of the “Love Bug ” virus is slowly spreading across the world, but so far the damage is small compared with its former version.
The new Love Bug virus creates disorder.
Richard Saunders of anti-viral firm Symantec said the virus only affected a dozen companies around the world.
“While it is a nasty virus, it’s not spreading anywhere near the rate Love But or (last year’s ) Melissa was spreading,” Saunders said.
“New Love” is similar in form to the Love Bug, which swept the world two weeks ago and caused more than $ 10 million in damages. But it’s much more destructive. The virus appears as an attachment to an e-mail whose subject begins with “FW”
If a user clicks on the attachment’s scroll-like icon(卷轴样的图标), every file on his hard drive is destroyed.
“Basically, it’s going to destroy your machine, ” said Eric Chine, chief researcher at Symantec’s anti-virus lad in the Netherlands.
The Love Bug only killed a small set of files, including graphic files. This virus even wipes out the Windows operating system.
Attorney General Janet Reno warned the public at a news conference today to be careful of any suspicious e-mail with attachments. “Do not open it, even it comes from a trusted source.” she said.

Like the Love Bug, after the e-mail attachment is opened and the virus is carried out, New Love sends itself to everyone in a victim’s Microsoft Outlook address book. Fortunately for users, the lesson is the same as from the Love Bug: If you see a message with an attachment whose name ends in vbs, with a scroll-like icon, don’t click on the attachment. Also like the Love Bug, this virus only affects computers running Windows 98, NT 4.0 Windows 95 with Internet Explorer 5.0 and can only spread if users rely on a Microsoft Outlook address book for e-mail. Microsoft will soon give a fix for Outlook that warns people or suspicious attachments, the company said.
