Can animals be artistic? Painting and music are part of efforts to keep animals happy at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.
A sloth bear (长毛熊) called Francois is one of the National Zoo’s artists. He began his artistic career two years ago. Francois has a very unusual way to paint. He uses his breathing to paint. His zookeeper, Stacey Tabellario, says that although the technique may look strange, it is actually a very natural behavior for sloth bears. The zookeepers fill one of those tubes full of paint and ask them to breathe through it. And they blow all of the paints onto the canvases (画布), making these really cool paintings.
Animal artists come in all shapes and sizes at the Zoo. They use many kinds of techniques to create their works of art. Apes use paintbrushes. Many use their paws or claws—much like a human painter who would use his or her hands.
Stacey Tabellario says Francois seems to enjoy expressing himself through his art. “When I set up the materials for painting activity, he comes and sits next to them and waits until they are ready for painting. He does that every time. I also see where his eyes go. He does see the paints come out of the tube and land on the canvas.”
But not every animal wants to paint. Music is another part of the arts enrichment program. Physically and mentally stimulating activities are an important part of the daily care of the animals. Trainers have a lot of tools, from tablet computer to small toys.
Kenton Kerns says the program helps the animals and the zookeepers in many ways. Every interaction between keepers and their animals creates some sort of connections. The one-of-a-kind works of art created by the animals are popular with zoo visitors. Many are sold at the zoo’s fund-raising events.
1.From Paragraph 2, we can learn that ________.
A. Francois is a two-year-old artist at the National Zoo
B. Francois can make fantastic paintings with paintbrushes
C. Francois, way to paint is an unnatural behavior for sloth bears
D. Francois paints by blowing the paints in the tubes onto the canvas
2.According to the passage, the apes paint by ________.
A. blowing the tubes full of paints

A. can be sold at a high price
B. are mainly popular with the kids
C. create higher prices than the artists
D. can be bought at the zoo’s fund-raising events
4.What’s the main idea of the passage?

Vast parts of Earth should be left wild
To avoid mass extinctions of plants and animals, governments should protect a third of the oceans and land by 2030 and half by 2050, with a focus on areas of high biodiversity. So say leading biologists in an editorial in the journal Science.
This isn't just about saving biodiverse areas, says Jonathan Baillie of the National Geographic Society, one of the authors. It is also about saving ourselves by protecting_____ natural systems, or ecosystems, and their benefits to us, known as ecosystem services. "We are learning that the large areas that remain are important for providing services for all life. The forests, for example, are_____ for absorbing and storing carbon," says Baillie.
At present, just 3.6 per cent of the planet's oceans and 14.7 per cent of land is protected by law. At the 2010 Nagoya Conference of the Convention on Biological Diversity, governments agreed to protect 10 per cent of the oceans and 17 per cent of land by 2020.
But this isn't nearly enough, says Baillie. In the editorial, he and his coauthor, Ya﹣Ping Zhang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, want governments to set much bigger_____ at the next major conference on biodiversity in 2020.
"We have to enormously_____ our ambition if we want to avoid an extinction crisis and if we want to maintain the ecosystem services that we_____ benefit from," says Baillie. "The trends are in a_____direction, it's just we have to move much faster."
It is hard to work out how much space is needed to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem_____, the pair say, because there is so much we don't know about life on Earth ﹣ like how many species there are.
_____, most estimates suggest that between 25 and 75 percent of high biodiversity regions or major ecosystems should be protected. Therefore,we, including governments, should be_____ when setting goals and strategies.
"There is no doubt that we need far more land and sea_____ for conserving and retaining nature,"says James Watson at the University of Queensland in Australia. "Targets like 50 per cent are in the right ball park when it comes to the minimal_____ of area needed to conserve biodiversity."
But Watson and others stress that which areas get protected is even more important than the overall percentage. "The key thing is to protect the right areas," says Jose Montoya of the Station for Theoretical and Experimental Ecology in Moulis, France. "If we_____ protect a proportion of the territory, governments will likely protect what's easy, and that's usually areas of_____ biodiversity and ecosystem service provision."
In fact, a third of the 3.6 percent of land that is already meant to be protected is actually being_____,Watson's team reported last month. So only_____ areas to be protected isn't enough.

Puerto Rico may be part of the USA but its music and dance is a mixture of both Spanish and African rhythms. The country, as a result, is a mixture of very new and very old. It exhibits the open American way of yet retains the more formal Spanish influences. This is reflected in the architecture, not just the contrast between the colonial and the modern in urban areas but also in the countryside, where older buildings sit side by side with concrete schools and buildings.
However, if you do not wander beyond the tourist areas on the coast, you will not experience the real Puerto Rico. Old volcanic mountains, long inactive, occupy a large part of the interior(内陆), with the highest peak, Cerro de Punta, at 1,338m in the Cordillera Central. North of the Cordillera is the karst (岩溶)country where the limestone(石灰石)has been acted upon by water to produce a series of small steep hills and deep holes. The mountains are surrounded by a coastal plain with the Atlantic shore beaches cooled all the year round by trade winds.
The population is 3.8 million, of which about 1.5 million live in San Juan, although about another two million Puerto Ricans live in the USA Average life expectancy is 73.8 years and GDP per capita is US $12,212, the highest in Latin America, although not up to the level of mainland USA. Most Puerto Ricans do not speak English and less than 30% speak it fluently. Second generation Puerto Ricans who were born in New York but who have returned to the island, are called Nuyoricans.
