Green therapy: how gardening is helping to fight depression
A growing movement is promoting the role gardening can play in patient recovery.
Sydenham Garden feels out of step with its surroundings in urban south London. Surrounded by houses on most sides, with a school on its doorstep, it is hard to imagine that this small patch of green space is bringing a new life to people struggling with their mental health. The site, run by the Sydenham Garden charity trust, is just under an acre and has a well-being centre with gardens, a nature reserve and activity rooms. Therapeutic(治疗的)gardening activities are held weekly, and are run by experienced staff, who are in turn supported by a team of volunteers.
Christine Dow, 63, was originally referred to the garden by her GP to help overcome her depression. After a year of "green" therapy, she became a volunteer, for the past decade she has spent a few hours every week supporting others referred to the project.
During 2017-2018, Sydenham Garden received 313 patient referrals(转诊)from health professionals. A typical referral will be between 6 and 12 months. Most people referred will score in the low well-being category-according to the Warwick-Edinburgh scale-when starting, but score in the moderate well-being category upon completion. It is part of a growing movement devoted to increasing the role that gardening and other forms of "green" therapy cam play in patient recovery. It is also one of the 1,500 organizations signed up to Growing Health, a national project set up by the charity Garden Organic and the membership organization Sustain.
"Gardening is not for everyone," says Maria Devereaux, a project officer at Sustain. "But,increasingly now, we've got evidence that even people who aren't gardeners are able to harvest the benefits of being outside working with nature and all the things that come with it." Evidence collected by Growing Health found simply viewing a green space trough a window could help people relax and reduce stress levels. Other evidence confirmed that the physical activity of gardening could improve mental wellbeing.
1.What do we know about Sydenham Garden?
A.Sydenham Garden Can't keep pace with is surroundings.
B.Sydenham Garden is beneficial to people with mental health.
C.Sydenham Garden is very large with a well-being centre.
D.Sydenham Garden holds therapeutic gardening activities monthly.
2.What can we infer from Christine Dow's example?
A.She helped others overcome depression.
B.She was an experienced staff in Sydenham Garden.
C.She devoted herself to referring others to the projects.
D.She might be grateful to this "green" therapy.
3.What does the first "it" refer to in Paragraph 4?
A.A typical referral. B.Green therapy.
C.Sydenham Garden. D.Sydenham Garden charity trust.
4.What's Maria Devereaux's attitude towards Gardening?

There is a growing number of kidults---or adults who wear the mask of maturity but prefer to pander(迎合) to their inner child.
They feel ill equipped for parenthood, because they don’t see what values or lessons they could honestly pass on to their young, besides self-centeredness and a passion for the good things in life. They are trying to live by not acting their age.
As Ms Jane put it in her letter: I’m married, in my late 20s and enjoy a lifestyle other married graduate couples enjoy: winning and dining, tasteful clothes, travel and a career. Why give up all these for a baby?
It is reported that when asked whether they were adults, most people in their 20s answered they were not sure. This reflected a global economy in which people chased more papers to get better jobs that would comfortably support middle class living.
Being a kidult is not all about being selfish, though. With the untold uncertainties of war, fluctuating(波动)markets, disease and terrorism, many see this world as a poor place to live in—let alone bring kids up in. This seems especially so in urban living. All anyone wants after a long, hard day at work is some peace and quiet.
My classmate, Jenny, mused(沉思)recently how our friends living in small Malaysian towns were onto their second or third kids. Maybe they just loved having children around. Or maybe, in their own way, they wanted to leave the world a better place than they found it.
That’s how you, I and everyone know we have the chance to breathe air, touch grass and see sky. I think out parents understand that just being alive is an experience worth passing on.
1.What is a kidult in the writer’s opinion?
A. A person who doesn’t have a child
B. An adult who actually has a psychology of a child
C. A child who doesn’t want to grow up
D. A person who doesn’t know that what values he has
2.What does the underlined word “paper” in Para. 4 mean?
A. money
B. reputation
C.qualification
D. power
3.The author explains the kidult phenomenon by ________.
A. presenting research findings
B. making comparison
C. showing her own experience
D. using examples
4.We can learn from the text that kidults________.
A. know little what they can pass on to their children
B. are sure of their abilities for good life
C. living in urban can enjoy more peace
D. living in small towns know well what they’re living for

Gene technology to benefit people
Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.
The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.
Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial(皇室) family being a good example, have hereditary(遗传的) diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it and a healthy child will be born.
Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep; therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.
1.What does "these two killers" in the second paragraph refer to?
A.Gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases.
B.The two murderers who killed the cloned baby
C.The two diseases of cancer and heart disease
D.Hereditary diseases and cancer
2.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases.
B.Gene technology can be used to clone human babies.
C.Gene technology can help people to give birth of a baby.
D.Gene technology can help the English imperial family out
3.In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases?
A.Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days.
B.Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it.
C.Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.
D.Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology.
4.What is the main purpose of writing this passage?
A.Expressing the writer’s idea that gene technology will benefit people
B.Telling people the advantages of gene technology
C.Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people
D.Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity

Scientists think that growing garden grass could be the secret to solving our energy needs, and we may soon be able to replace our gasoline with “grassoline”.
The team, including experts from Cardiff University in Wales, has shown that hydrogen can be taken from grass in useful amounts with the help of sunlight and a cheap catalyst(催化剂) —something that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up.
It is the first time that this has been shown and it could lead to a sustainable(可持续的) way of making hydrogen, reported Asian News International. This could be an important kind of renewable energy because it is high in energy and it does not give out harmful gases when it is burned.
Study co-author Michael Bowker said, “This is really a green source of energy. Hydrogen is seen as an important future energy carrier as the world moves from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and our research has shown that even garden grass could be a good way of getting it.”
Cellulose(纤维素), which is a key part of plants and the biopolymer(生物聚合物) found in the largest numbers on the earth, could be a great source of hydrogen.
In its study, the team looked at the possibility of getting hydrogen from cellulose using sunlight and a simple catalyst.
This is called photocatalysis(光催化作用) and in it, the sunlight starts the catalyst, which then makes cellulose and water into hydrogen. The researchers studied the effectiveness of three metal-based catalysts, of which nickel(镍) especially interested the researchers, as it is a much more common metal than gold and palladium(钯) and it saves more money.
According to Bowker, producing hydrogen from cellulose using photocatalysis has not been studied in detail. The team’s research shows that large amounts of hydrogen can be produced using this method with the help of a bit of sunlight and a cheap catalyst.
The study shows that it is effective to use real grass taken from a garden. “This is important as it avoids the need to separate and clean up cellulose, which can be both difficult and costly,” said Bowker.
1.What are needed to get hydrogen from grass?
A. A catalyst and palladium. B. Water and cellulose.
C. Sunlight and a biopolymer. D. Sunlight and a catalyst.
2.Why is the new way of making hydrogen considered significant?
A. It is cheap, green and sustainable.
B. It is the best to produce the renewable energy.
C. It is more productive and efficient than other methods.
D. It can replace the way to make fossil fuels completely.
3.Why does nickel interest the researchers in making hydrogen from cellulose?
A. It can produce the largest amount of hydrogen.
B. It can avoid separating and cleaning up cellulose.
C. It is more common than other metals and costs less.
D. It works quicker than other metals during photocatalysis.
4.What does the author intend to tell us mainly in this passage?
A. Catalysts that could be taken from grass.
B. A new way of making hydrogen from cellulose.
C. The potential of hydrogen as a renewable energy.
D. The connection between hydrogen and photocatalysis.

Many people want to grow their own garden, but they simply do not have the room. Do not worry. There is a solution. Consider container gardening.
The great thing about container gardening is that you can use a variety of different containers. You simply have to use your imagination. You could create a beautiful garden with things such as cement blocks, hanging baskets, clay pots, or window boxes. There are so many options when it comes to container gardening; it is only limited by your imagination.
Of course, you will want to take the following into consideration when you are ready to begin container gardening, in order for it to be successful.
First, you should avoid any containers that have been used to store chemicals, as well as treated wood. This could lead to the sudden death of your flowers and lead to the failure of your container gardening.
With any container that you choose, you need to ensure that it allows the water in it to drain when necessary. So it may be essential for you to create holes in the container to help this along. You should also make sure the containers are placed on a raised surface, not upon the floor, to ensure the best possible drainage.
Ensure that the containers you choose are appropriate in size for the plants you choose, You need to prevent the roots from overgrowing the container.
If you like fresh veggies, you could consider container gardening with vegetables. This requires a process that differs from that of flower gardening. Talk to an employee at a supply store in your area, They can help you choose the right containers for the vegetables you are wishing to grow.
