Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water and placed the fire on high Soon the three pots came to a boil.In one he placed carrots, in the other he placed eggs, and the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word.
The daughter impatiently wondered what he was trying to do. In half an hour he walked over to the stove and turned down the fire.He pulled the carrots out and placed them in the bowl.He pulled the eggs out and placed them in the bowl. Then he ladled(盛)the coffee out and placed it in a cup.Turning to her he asked.“Darling what do you see?”
“Carrots, eggs, and coffee.”she replied.
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft.He then asked her to take an egg and break it.After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled ege. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma(芳香).
Humbly, she asked.“What does it mean Father?”
He explained.“Each of them faced the same adversity, however each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard. But after going through boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg was fragile.A thin outer shell protected a liquid center. But after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The coffee beans are unique however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water”

The International Coast Clean-up is an organization that is set up to help the environment in the worid, especially the areas near the waters.Recently, more than a half-million vulunteers are taking part in an international movement to comb the world’s shorelines for cigarette butts, bottle caps and any other rubbish they can find.
The Intematiohal Coast Clean-up is in its 14th volunteers ready to collect more than 10 million pieces of rubbish along 19,308 kilometers of shoreline in 70 countries.
Sponsored(赞助)by the Centre for Marine Conservation and several other non—profit(非盈利的) groups and corporate sponsors, the activity is a one-day attempt to improve conditions on important waterfronts.
Cigarette butts are by far the most common item, with exactly 1.6 million picked up and counted in the last year’s clean-up.They were followed in numbers by food wrappers, plastic pieces, bottle caps and broken pieces of glass. The global event is held on the third Saturday of September.
Last year, the biggest volunteer army was in the Philippines, where nearly 300,000 people took part in the clean-up.With more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines is among the countries which have the largest shorelines.
“Around every main body of water,we have a rubbish problem,”said Sheavly, director of the Center for rubbish problem.Bad weather with some hurricane affected some plans, but thousands of volunteers were ready to go,she said.
About 20,000 divers are joining to clean up offshore rubbish, with major underwater efforts in the United States, the Philippines,Germany,Italy,Australia,Venezuela and EI Salvador.
Globally, less than 20 percent of shore rubbish clearly comes from the water. The most appears to come from land sourees.
Part of the effort is counting the rubbish.Volunteers carry cards to recond their collections, which will be piled and used for studies of how to settle the problem year-round.

Ashley Power’s mother bought a computer for her when she was eight. When she was thirteen, she was surfing the Internet regularly, but she couldn’t find anywhere for teenagers to meet and talk. And one day she thought, “If I had my own website, I’d make it a really interesting site for teenagers.”
So, when Ashley was sixteen, she launched her own website, called GooseHead. Young people got excited when they searched on this website and step by step they introduced the site to others and made more friends. She had no idea how big a success it would be, but three years later, the site was the most successful teen site in the USA! It was getting 100,000 hits every day, and Ashley had about 30 employees.
After a few years, the website closed down. Then Ashley, who lives in Los Angeles, was asked to write a book called GooseHead Guide to Life. In an interview Ashley gave advice to teenagers who wanted to start their own business, “Just be strong and have your dreams and work hard at them. And don’t listen when people tell you that you can’t do it, because I heard ‘no’ a lot. Just keep going until you hear ‘yes’!”

When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was severely lame and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. I would feel ashamed at the unwanted attention. If he ever noticed or was bothered, he never let on, nor did he say anything about it.
It was difficult to coordinate(协调) our steps—his pausing, my impatience—and because of that, we didn’t say much as we went along. But as we started out, he always said, “You set the pace, I will try to adjust to you.”
Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. He went to work sick, and despite bad weather. He almost never missed a day, and would make it to the office even if others could not. A matter of pride.
When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. At such times my sisters or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn, NY, on a child’s sleigh to the subway entrance. Once there, he would grasp the handrail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice-free. In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside until we met him in Brooklyn on his way home.
When I think of it now, I wondered at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to subject himself to such indignity and stress. And at how he did it—without bitterness or complaint.
He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”, and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.
Now that I am older, I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don’t know precisely what a “good heart” is. But I know the times I don’t have one myself.
My father has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my unwillingness to be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was, how unworthy I was, how I regretted it. I think of him when I complain about incident, when I am envious of another’s good fortune, when I don’t have a “good heart”.
At such times I put my hand on his arm to regain my balance, and say, “You set the pace, I will try to adjust to you.”

A beautiful, expensively dressed lady complained to her psychiatrist (精神病医师) that she felt that her whole life was empty; it had no meaning.
So the psychiatrist called over the old lady who cleaned the office floors, and then said to the rich lady, “I’m going to ask Mary to tell you how she found happiness. All I want you to do is to listen.”
So the old lady put down her broom, sat on a chair and told her story, “Well, my husband died of malaria and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody … I had nothing left. I couldn’t sleep; I couldn’t eat; I never smiled at anyone; I even thought of taking my own life. Then one evening, a little kitten followed me home from work. Somehow I felt sorry for that kitten. It was cold outside, so I decided to let the kitten in. I got it some milk, and it licked the plate clean. Then it purred comfortably and rubbed against my legs, and for the first time in months, I smiled. Then I stopped to think; if helping a little kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could __________. So the next day, I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbor who was sick in bed. Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy. Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I’ve found happiness, by giving it to others.”

Why would human beings waste a third of their lives sleeping when they could be doing more important things like looking after their families or working? Some scientists believe sleeping helps recharge the body, while others think it is important for strengthening newly-formed memories. Now, there is new evidence which suggests that the purpose of sleep may be to forget some of the millions of new things we learn each day.
The neurons in the human brain consist of fibers called dendrites(树突). These grow as we learn new things and connect the brain’s cells to each other at contact points called synapses(突触). The larger the dendrites become and the more cells they connect, the more information we store.
In 2018, Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli, both biologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, suggested a new idea: The things our brains learn each day result in so many synapses that things start to get a little messy. Sleeping allows us to sort through(整理) the “noise” and dispense all the unnecessary information, leaving behind only the most important memories.
Recently, the university’s research has provided direct evidence to support the theory. The experiment involved analyzing 6,920 synapses in the brain shavings from two groups of mice over a four-year period; one group had been allowed to sleep, while the other had been kept awake and entertained with toys. The researchers discovered that the brain shavings of the sleeping mice had nearly 20 percent fewer synapses than those that had been kept awake and entertained.
It was also evident during the study that the brain does not shave every synapse. 20% of neurons remained unchanged; these were most likely well-established memories. Therefore, although we may be sleeping to forget some of what we’ve learned, the brain “forgets”in a smart way.
Most researchers believe clearing our brains is not the only purpose of sleep. Resting our minds and bodies has also been found to help with other biological functions like strengthening our immunity. Though scientists may never agree on a single reason, they are all sure of one thing-a good night’s rest is essential for our health. So try and spend at least a third of your day sleeping!
