It was with heavy hearts that my son and I worked to prepare his car for a milestone journey—the day he moved across the country after twenty years of living under my roof.
Our work went slowly into the afternoon. The Sunday baseball game came on.Our hometown Cardinals were playing the Atlanta Braves.I overheard bits of the TV broadcast—Atlanta took a two-run lead as we were packing the trunk. After that I became absorbed in glum thoughts about his departure and forgot about the game.Suddenly I heard the door open.“Dad,”he said,“let’s watch the game. They’re only down by a run.”
His red-colored eyes instantly told me that he,too, found this to be difficult and wanted to share one last father-son moment.Without hesitation I led the way to the TV set. There,we found the Cards losing 3—1.“Oh,”he said,“they’re down two runs.”His voice cracked with doubt.“I thought they were coming back.”“That’s fine,”I said, wanting so much to string this moment.“Let’s watch anyway.”
The Cards got to bat last.First a single, and then another.Suddenly the game became very interesting. When David Eckstein parked the third pitch(投球)into the seats,we were transformed, jumping up and down. That’s when the magic moment came. The sadness of that day was replaced by the exciting baseball game, something we had done many times together before.
Then he left.It was a sad day when I helped my son pack and get ready to move away to college. But this moment of joy mixed with sadness made the day,the trip and our life seem so right.
1.What does the underlined word“glum”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Anxious. B. Curious.

From a young age, it was my dream to go to Africa and work with animals. Everybody laughed at me, but my mother, Vanne, told me never to give up, and that I could always find a way.
So, when I was 23, after saving up my earnings from working as a waitress, I went to wild, untamed (野性的) Africa and began my work. In 1960 I went to the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve. At that time, we knew nothing of the behavior or social structure of chimps (黑猩猩), and I was to go there and see what I could find out. Usually, when you wake up, you leave your dreams behind you, but I found myself waking up to my dream.
As the British government wouldn’t let me go without older women’s company, my amazing mother came with me and stayed for four months. We shared a second-hand army tent, and we used the stream for fresh water and washing. We could swim in the lake, although there were crocodiles.
It was beautiful there, although both my mother and I nearly died of malaria (疟疾). I was scared I wouldn’t be able to do what I had set out to, because, at first, the chimps ran away from me in fear. I spent my days watching, listening, tracking and in the evenings writing up my notes.
For my mother, who stayed back at the camp, it must have been terrifying, and very lonely. There were snakes and spiders, as well as an old leopard who would come by. But she had an amazing way with people, and would hand out medicines to the fishermen, who saw her as a witch doctor.
In my fifth month there, I finally saw one of the chimps, which I called David Greybeard, stripping (剥光) straw to “fish” for termites (白蚁). It proved that man wasn’t the only toolmaker, and that everything had to be redefined.
1.What does the author mean by saying “I found myself waking up to my dream” in the second paragraph?
A. She lacked sleep due to busy work.
B. She found her dream was hard to realize.
C. She had more new dreams about her work.
D. She tried to realize her dream every day.
2.The author was afraid at the Reserve in the beginning because _____.
A. there were crocodiles in the lake B. she could not get close to the chimps
C. it was hard to get clean water D. the chimps attacked her sometimes
3.The author’s mother was thought of by the local people as _____.
A. helpful and warm-hearted B. funny and selfish
C. romantic and talkative D. honest and hardworking
4. Which of the following is the author’s important discovery?
A. She found a new kind of termite.
B. Chimps can communicate with each other.
C. Some other animals can also make tools.
D. Chimps can find medicines to cure themselves.

I was in Walt Disney World with my son, Daniel, who is autistic (患自闭症的), and at that time he was 7 years old. My wife and our three other sons were with us too. He was having one of his melt down screaming tantrums (发怒), only God knows why. So my wife and I decided I would take the bus back to the hotel, and she would stay in the park with the other three children.
After we got on the bus, the screaming continued. My son looks “normal”. To the many people on the bus, he appeared to just be a kid screaming --- or a spoiled child who did not get his special toy that day. It did not take long --- less than a minute --- before the screaming brought about stares, then glares from the other passengers.
To my shame, I found myself losing my temper at my own son. I was embarrassed, angry, and frustrated, and felt cheated by God for not being able to enjoy a normal vacation with my family because of him. I started to wonder what life would be like without having to deal with this cross (痛苦).
And just as the reactions of the other passengers were becoming most intense, a man seated just in front of me turned around to face me. I cheered myself up for his advice on how to raise a well-behaved child.
He said calmly, “Is he alright?” I said, “He’s autistic.” Then the man said , “It's alright.” And he smiled. That’s all.
And suddenly, all the anger building up inside me was gone. I almost wept for shame at how I had felt a moment before. It no longer mattered what the other people thought. My son was my gift from God.
I will never forget that man, nor his small, simple act of kindness and understanding. I truly believe he was my son’s guardian angel that day maybe mine too.
1.Why did Daniel become angry?
A.Because he didn't get his special toy.
B.No one knew the reason for his anger.
C.Because something went wrong with him.
D.Because he quarreled with his brother or sister.
2.Hearing Daniel’s screaming, _______.
A.the passengers were not satisfied
B.the passengers felt sorry for the author
C.the author comforted him with patience
D.the driver asked the author and his son to get off
3.What does the third paragraph tell us?
A.How the author helped his son calm down.
B.How the author reacted to his son's screaming.
C.What made the author angry and embarrassed.
D.What the author’s life would be like without Daniel.
4.How did the author’s anger disappear?
A.The bus arrived at the stop near his hotel.
B.A stranger helped him realize his mistake.
C.His son stopped screaming and apologized to him.
D.He suddenly realized his son was an autistic child.
