We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body full of energy. It works your muscles and makes your heart work hard so as to send blood to your muscles. So, exercise makes your heart and muscles strong. Exercise also makes you feel refreshed. If you exercise a couple of times a week, you will stay happy and healthy.
Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US, many people don't have enough exercise because it is hard for them. People have to work from dawn till dusk, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. They cannot get much exercise sitting at desk passively.
Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, the majority of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is unfavourable in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours and calls for too much attention. It makes a person worn out. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don't have the desire to take exercise after work.
Today, many people in the West are overweight, which causes health problems for them. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So many people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don't see a difference right away, they will lose heart and stop exercising.

Do we need an “Ivy League(常春藤联盟)”?
China may soon have its own “Ivy League”, with a union of top universities.
The term originally referred to an athletic conference of eight top universities in the northeastern US. The Chinese version, which was officially started in mid-October, consists of nine famous universities, including Peking, Tsinghua, Zhejiang and Fudan. The union is supposed to result in student exchange programs, recognition of academic achievements, and other joint programs.
The news of this Chinese “Ivy League” has received mixed responses from the public and press. Some negative critics have dismissed it as yet another example of the wishful copying of international practices without fully understanding them. Others say that the “Ivy League” is not necessary but that the union is a good idea, one that could promote academic development.
So what’s your opinion on a Chinese “Ivy League”? Do we need one?
Yes. Ivy League or not, nine of China’s best universities cooperating is a good thing.
These universities combining resources could create a better environment for students and for research. It could also save a lot of time and resources because it would mean fewer unnecessary investments for some of the universities.
Allowing students to move to or have exchanges with other universities could broaden their horizons, improve their social skills and create more employment opportunities. The results could be more important than lessons and achievements.
The term “Ivy League” carries a sense of academic excellence, tradition and reputation. If borrowing such a term could encourage students’ and professors’ mental state and improve Chinese higher education, then there’s no reason not to do it.
No.Universities should do some work on increasing cooperation instead of copying an “Ivy League” model.
Many Chinese universities already have such cooperation with each other. If this cooperation were associated with the “Ivy League”, it would just distract (分散) attention and resources and have a negative effect.
These Chinese universities are all state-run and most get their funding from the government. They’re quite similar to each other in many ways and more cooperation wouldn’t bring about as much potential ability as between , say, public and private, or Chinese and foreign universities.
China should find its own way to develop world-class universities instead of by copying some foreign practices. We have our own unique conditions and foreign lessons often don’t apply well here.

“HEARTLESS”— a word you wouldn’t want to use to describe a person. But having his heart removed was what saved Craig Lewis’ life—and what made him the first living “heartless” man.
The 55-year-old,dying of heart disease, was told he only had 12 hours to live, when Billy Cohn and Bud Frazier, doctors from the Texas Heart Institute, decided to try something new. They removed Lewis heart and replaced it with an artificial (人造的) one. Less than a week after the operation, Lewis was able to sit and speak.
Lewis kept on living like a normal person, with only one difference—he didn’t have a heartbeat. The human heart usually pumps blood through our bodies by beating regularly. By contrast, this artificial heart pushes the blood forward with two moving blades(桨叶). If you were to touch Lewis or listen to his chest, you would not feel a heartbeat. If you hooked him up to an EKG(心电图) machine, the line would be flat.
Scientists have been trying to create a working artificial heart for years. Until now, all artificial hearts either broke down or caused blocks and infections.
But after five years of hard work, Dr Cohn and Dr Frazier developed this artificial heart. It is smaller and quieter than other artificial hearts and can last much longer. They tested it on 38 calves (牛犊) and all of them turned out energetic and healthy. Lewis is the first human proof that the machine is a success.
The doctors will have to work more on the device and decide on a final design before it can be widely used. The US Food and Drug Administration will also need to say that the machine is safe. But this artificial heart looks likely to bring a ray of hope to thousands of patients.
