The following are four books that will help you change your mind and change your life.
1) You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay: A groundbreaking book when it was released in 1982. It is still the book that I turn to when I have physical unrest that requires deeper understanding. Louise Hay is the pioneer in looking at the connection between the physical unrest that we have in our body and the emotional connection. At the time that she wrote the book many people scoffed at this idea, but it is now widely accepted and millions of people refer to it on a daily basis.
2) The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz: Maintaining a sense of reliability and faith is developed through understanding to The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz written in 1997. We are faced with rules and regulations; don’t do this, don’t do that, watch what you are doing, be kind, loyal, faithful etc. The four agreements represent a simple system of maintaining your own inner authority while practicing being a true person with other people.
3) Slowing Down to the Speed of Life, Richard Carlson and Joseph Bailey: This is a new one in my “bedside collection” and one that has made the biggest impact on me lately. Written in 1997, it is even more relevant today than it was when it was written. The idea of “slowing down” to get there faster was extremely hard for me to understand. As a human species we seem to enjoy moving fast and expecting quick results, especially from ourselves. I should be successful now, I should be slim now, get me to my destination now—in contrast to “in the fullness of time” when I am ready.
4) The Game of Life and How to Play It, Florence Scovel-Shinn: A classic book that was first published in 1925 and remains one of my favorite books of all time. Scovel-Shinn understood the power of our words to express either our deepest desires or our most horrible nightmares.
So where does this leave you? The way I see it is if you want to ‘Heal Your Life” then you had better learn how to play “The Game of Life” by learning how to “Slow Down to the Speed of Life” and keep the “Four Agreements”. The solution may not be easy to do but it is simple. In fact, most solutions are pretty simple, and it is us humans that want to complicate it.
1.According to the author, people who are lacking in personal freedom should read______.
A. You Can Heal Your Life
B. The Four Agreements
C. Slowing Down to the Speed of Life
D. The Game of Life and How to Play It
2.Which of the following books did the author read most recently?
A. Slowing Down to the Speed of Life
B. The Four Agreements
C. You Can Heal Your Life
D. The Game of Life and How to Play It
3.In which part of a magazine would you probably find this passage?

Below are four books of the 10 Best Books of 2019. Which one will you add to your booklist?
Exhalation (呼吸)
By Ted Chiang
■ Many of the nine deeply beautiful stories in this collection explore the material consequences of time travel. Reading them feels, like sitting at dinner with a friend who explains scientific theory to you without an ounce of condescension (傲慢).Each thoughtful, elegantly crafted story poses a philosophical question; Chiang organizes all nine into a conversation that comes full circle, after having travelled remarkab1e val1eys ,,, deserts and plains.
Lost Children Archivef(档案)))
By Valeria Luiselli
■ The Mexican author’s third novel — her first to be written in English — unfolds against a backdrop of crisis: of children crossing borders, facing death, being confined, being deported unaccompanied by their guardians.
The novel centers on a couple and their two children, who are taking a road trip from New York City to the Mexican border; the couple's marriage is on the edge of collapse and the woman tries to help a Mexican immigrant find her daughters, who've gone missing in their attempt to cross the border behind her. The brilliance of Luiselli's writing stirs anger and pity. Acutely sensitive, Luiselli has delivered an experimental book, one that is as much about storytellers and storytelling as it is about lost children.
The Yellow House
By Sarah Broom
■ In her first extraordinary, fascinating appearance, Broom pushes past the baseline expectations of memoir to create an entertaining and inventive combination of literary forms. Part oral history, part urban history, part celebration of a bygone way of life, "The Yellow House" is a full accusation of the greed, discrimination, indifference and poor city planning that led her family's home to be wiped off the map. Tracing the history of a single home in New Orleans East, from the ' 60s to Hurricane Katrina, this is an instantly essential text, examining the past, present and possible future of the city of New Orleans, and a true reflection of America.
No Visible Bruises
By Rachel Louise Snyder
■ Snyder's thoroughly reported book covers what the World Health Organization has called "a global health problem of epidemic proportions." In America alone, more
than half of all murdered women are killed by a current or former partner; domestic violence cuts across lines of class, religion and race. Snyder exposes myths (restraining orders are the answer,: abusers never change) and writes movingly about the lives of people on both sides of the equation. She doesn't give easy answers but presents a wealth of information that is its own form of hope.
1.If you are a fan of science fiction, which book will you choose?
A.Exhalation Lost B.Children Archive
C.The Yellow House D.No Visible Bruises
2.According to the passage, which of the following sentences is TRUE?
A.In the book Exhalation, Ted Chiang describes a story told by his friend.
B.Lost Children Archive is Valeria Luiselli's first novel in English.
C.Several stories of literary forms make up the book, The Yellow House.
D.No Visible Bruises shows nothing but restraining orders are answers to family violence.

Do you know how to deal with failure at school? Here are four steps that will help you get the most out of each failure, and move on.
1. When you feel bad after failing, talk with your parents or good friend,or any other adult. Then decide to take the responsibility to improve yourself.Read the teachers’ comments on your test carefully.
Ask yourself what you were trying to do and why you failed.2. Maybe you didn’t have all the information you needed; maybe you made a mistake or a poor decision. If so,give yourself a pat in the back.Fewer people ever get something right the first time they try it,and often it takes them many times.
3. Sometimes the failure isn’t because of something you did or didn’t do; it is someone else’s fault. But don’t spend time blaming them; instead, move on toward your goals.
Don’t give up easily.4. There is a difference between making a decision and giving up.Deciding to follow a better way is one thing; simply walking away means you really have failed.
Keep trying again.Successful people are different because they choose their next steps instead of just reacting to feelings. If a goal is still important to you, figure out what to do and go after it again.5.
A.No pains,no gains.
B.Failure is unavoidable.
C.If it isn’t,do your best on something else.
D.Remove you bad feelings.
E.Actually it was because you were very lazy.
F.Review the situation to see what your choices are.
G.Usually it was because you were trying out a new skill or learning a new subject.

“Your first home,” Laurence Yep wrote in his book, The Lost Garden, “will always be the one that you remember best. I have been away from it for over twenty years, but I still go back in my dreams.” For Yep, whose father came from China, home was an apartment and the family grocery store in a neighborhood of San Francisco. It was there that he learned about patience, hard work, and getting along with neighbors.
Mr. Brown, Laurence Yep’s high school English teacher, often set high goals for his students. He was the first person to encourage Yep to write. The experience of that class changed the direction of Yep’s life. At the age of 18 Yep published his first short story, a sci-fi fantasy. He has since written many books and many kinds of books. He has retold Chinese folk stories and written for the theater. In nearly all these varied works, Yep, who is married to the children’s book author Joanne Ryder, has returned to questions he has been asking himself since childhood: What does it mean to be Chinese and American? Can one who belongs to two cultures ever feel at home anywhere?
When asked, “How has being of a Chinese by origin been important to you?” Laurence Yep replied, “As a child I wanted to be as American as possible. Then, in my early twenties, I became very interested in my Chinese roots. For years after that, I thought that my function as a Chinese American writer was to act as a bridge between two cultures. Now, though, I am not so sure that it is possible to join them together. Compared with Asian culture, American culture pays more attention to individuals and competition. The two cultures pull in opposite directions. So I see myself now as someone who will always be on the border between two cultures. That works to my benefit as a writer because not quite fitting in helps me be a better observer.”
1.According to Paragraph 1, Laurence Yep _____.
A. misses his first home very much
B. goes back to China from time to time
C. moved to San Francisco at an early age
D. once worked part-time at a grocery store
2.2We may infer from Paragraph 2 that Mr. Brown _____.
A. asked Laurence Yep to be a good observer
B. taught Laurence Yep the value of patience
C. helped Laurence Yep finish his first book
D. had high expectations of Laurence Yep
3.The last paragraph is mainly about Laurence Yep’s _____.
A. childhood memories
B. varied writing styles
C. view of the two cultures
D. relationship with his family
4.Which of the following best describes Laurence Yep’s attitude to life?
A. Learn to accept your own differences.
B. Put the needs of others ahead of your own.
C. Work hard and you will receive many benefits.
D. Challenge others as you would wish to be challenged.
