The old-fashioned general store is fast disappearing. This is, perhaps, a pity, because shopping today seems to lack that personal contact which existed when the shopkeeper knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand of tea Mrs. Smith usually bought or what sort of washing-powder Mrs. Jones preferred. Not only was the shop a center of buying and selling, but also a social meeting place.
A prosperous general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so there were very few problems in management as far as the staff were concerned. But now that the supermarket has replaced the general store, the job of the manager has changed completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems of running a large business.
Every morning the manager must, like the commander of an army division, carry out an inspection of his store to make sure that everything is ready for the business of the day. He must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make decisions as problems arise, and he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently with their respective responsibilities. No matter what he has to do throughout the day, however, the supermarket manager must be ready for any emergency that may arise. They say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have dealt with a flood, a fire, a birth and a death in your store. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
1. Why is it a pity that there are fewer old-fashioned general stores now? _____________________________.
2. The shopkeeper was often the most well-informed person in the neighborhood because _____________________________.
3. The words “… a flood, a fire, a birth and a death …” in the last sentence refer to _____________________________.
4. What must the manager do every morning? ___________________________.

In our fast world of phones, fax machines and computers, the old-fashioned art of letter writing is at risk of disappearing altogether. 1. There is the excitement of its arrival, the pleasure of seeing who it is from and, finally, the enjoyment of the contents.
Letter writing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. It probably began with the little notes I would write to my mother. My mother, also, always insisted I write my own thank-you letters for Christmas and birthday presents. 2..
When I left home at 18 to train as a doctor in London, I would write once a week, and so would my mother. Occasionally my father would write and it was always a joy to receive his long, amusing letters. 3. Of course, we also made phone calls but it is the letters that I remember most.
There were also letters from my boyfriend. In our youth he had to work or study away at some time and we were only able to stay in touch by letter. 4. I found that I could often express myself more easily in writing than by talking.
I love the letters that come with birthday or Christmas cards. Notes are appreciated, but how much better to have a year’s supply of news! And it’s better still when it’s an airmail envelope with beautiful stamps.
5. Like my mother before me, I insist they write their own thank-you letters. My daughter writes to me little letters, just as I did to my mother. I strongly urge readers not to allow letter writing to become another “lost art”.
A.Poor handwriting can spoil (破坏) your enjoyment of a letter.
B.I am pleased that my children are carrying on the tradition.
C.We had been writing to each other for a long time but never met.
D.It didn’t matter how short or untidy they were as long as they were letters.
E.But instead of harming the relationship, letter writing seemed to improve them.
F.Yet, to me, receiving a letter cannot be matched by any form of communication.
G.The letters from him contained just everyday events concerning my parents and their friends.

Food storing is common in members of the crow(乌鸦)family. A new study tested the birds outside this naturally occurring behaviour, which may have evolved(进化)specifically because it gives crows a survival advantage. Some crow species are known to naturally use tools to recover food. So the researchers tested whether the birds could store and recover a tool so they could get it at their food after a gap of 17 hours—something we wouldn’t expect them to do naturally. But they were able to instantly select the tool out of a number of unnecessary items.
In another experiment, the researchers taught crows to select a token (礼品券)from a number of items so that they could then exchange for food. Again, the birds then showed that they could plan for the future using this new behaviour. This is different from all of the previous studies in future planning, which have focused on naturally occurring behaviour. For example, we know that chimpanzees select, transport and save appropriate tools for future needs.
These studies have shown that animals can plan for the future—but they left an important question open for debate. Are animals only able to plan to use abilities that have evolved to give them a specific advantage, or can they flexibly and intelligently apply planning behaviour across various actions? Most critics would say the former, as the animals were tested in naturally occurring behaviours.
But the new research provides the first evidence that animal species can plan for the future using behaviour that doesn’t typically occur in nature. This supports the view that at least some recognitive abilities in animals don’t evolve just in response to specific problems. Instead, it suggests that animals can apply these behaviours flexibly across problems in a similar way to humans. We need to investigate how flexible behaviour evolved. Then we might be able to see how crows’ ability to plan for the future fits in with their broader cognitive powers.
1.What’s the new finding about some crows according to Paragraph 1?
A. They can store food. B. They can use tools to recover food.
C. They can store and recover tools. D. They can select and store food.
2.What are crows trained by scientists to do when given a token?
A. Reject it casually. B. Exchange it for food.
C. Save it as their food. D. Build a nest with it.
3.What do scientists think of the studies that animals can plan for the future?
A. They are controversial. B. They are disappointing.
C. They are contradictory. D. They are convincing.
4.What can be inferred about recognitive abilities in animals?
A. They develop only with age.
B. It is unclear how they’ve evolved now.
C. No animals but crows benefit from them.
D. Planning for the future helps their evolution.

This is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store I am employed as a shop assistant.
When you took my bag, I don’t know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there’s not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the £5 was useful to you. I have informed the social security office so you won’t be able to cash the child benefit next week. I hope that won’t leave you too short. But if you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book.Of course, I phoned the bank right away and the check-cashing card is no longer valid(有效的), so it won’t be much use to you.
Actually I don’t mind about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that!
I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers in it, and notes and things that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you . I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?
Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasn’t even an expensive one, just a plain, old brown leather handbag. You probably dumped it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We’ve looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop.
I’m not really angry with you.I know how the pressures of modern living can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel offended and helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged(耸) their shoulders. “It happens all the time,” they told me. Some small comfort, I suppose. But I’ve lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what had happened, “Why? Mummy, why us?” I couldn’t answer that question. I wonder if you can.
1.In writing Paragraph 2, the writer wants to __________.
A. describe the contents of the bag in detail B. give some suggestions to the three thieves
C. tell the thieves they could hardly get any money D. state the fact that she was careless with the money
2.Which of the following is the most valuable to the writer?
A. The cash in her bag. B. The papers and notes in the bag.
C. The handbag itself. D. The check books in the bag.
3. What can we conclude about the police?
A. They have doubts about human nature. B. They show sympathy for the woman.
C. They think the case quite common. D. They are unable to find the thieves.
4. Why does the author write the letter?
A. To give the thieves a serious warning. B. To complain about the fall of human goodness.
C. To call people’s attention to their belongings. D. To express her affection for her valuable bag.
