Many diseases and medical conditions are caused by things out of our control. Doctors urge us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our alcohol intake. 1. And it is free and easy. Smile!
When we smile, the brain wiring gets altered. The chemicals that are released are more positive. Smiling is a first step in fighting physical and emotional stress and its sometimes harmful effects on human health.
The main cause of heart attacks and strokes are blockages in blood vessels (血管).2.The most common reason for these blockages is a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries (大动脉). When we feel stressed or under pressure, our body releases many natural hormones (荷尔家) including adrenaline and cortisol. When we are stressed for a long period, these stress hormones are ever-present in our bodies. And that, medical researchers warn, may lead to health problems.
3. However, they claim that when people are stressed for long periods of time, they may not make the best decisions about what to eat. They may overeat, smoke or drink too much alcohol. They may not get enough exercise or sleep. And all of these can lead to health problems.
Dr. Choctkalingam says a smile may be one way to help. He tells his patients to smile 20 times an hour. To some, that might seem like a lot of smiling. Or some might even feel foolish . . . smiling for seemingly no reason. 4. It is not invasive (侵入的) like a surgical operation. It is free and it has no bad side effects.

Many crimes and social problems are caused by children. Despite the damage these teenage criminals cause, parents are not responsible in most countries. This article will discuss whether parents should be forced to pay for their children’s crimes.
There are many reasons why parents should not be responsible for crimes committed by teenage children. First of all, teenagers today are independent. They often move out of the parents’ house at 18 years of age or younger. They are expected to learn to take care of themselves and make their own decisions, and not to stay like small children attached to their parents. Secondly, parents are working. They cannot watch their adolescent children all the time. A third point is that even children from good families can sometimes commit crimes. Parents should not be responsible if they have worked hard to raise their children properly.
However, young troublemakers cause many problems, and I feel we should make parents responsible. Firstly, most juvenile(未成年的)crimes are committed by adolescents whose parents do not care or make any effort to control their children. If parents had to pay fines(罚款), they might make more effort. Another point is that even though the children may seem mature, they are not really able to make good decisions. Parents should be responsible for raising and teaching their children until they are fully grown. Furthermore, if children know that their parents will have to pay, they will think carefully before getting into trouble.
In summary, there are good reasons both for and against making parents pay for acts committed by their children. However, I feel strongly that if we want to reduce the number of such crimes, we need to make parents take more responsibility.
1.Those who insist that parents should not be responsible for their children’s crimes believe that ________.
a. teenagers are able to deal with things on their own
b. children need to experience difficulties to be fully grown
c. it’s impossible for parents to be with their children all the time
d. parents are not to blame as long as they try their best to educate their children
A.a, c, d B.a, b, c C.b, c, d D.a, b, d
2.According to Paragraph 3, the main reason for children’s crimes is ________.

Most people think their time problems are outer, and that they are caused by the telephone, meetings, visitors, and delayed information or decisions. Although these problems often have a bad effete on them, as when people call or drop in, we usually contribute to them. We fail to have calls screened by a skillful secretary or assistant, or we leave our door open, actually assuring constant interruptions.
In almost all cases, it is possible to influence, if not control, it usually can cause problems, such as, slowness and indecision, lack of self-discipline, the inability to delegate, or the tendency to fight fires, to act without thinking, and to jump from task to task without finishing any of them.
Time is constant that cannot be changed. The clock cannot be slowed down or speeded up. Thus we cannot manage time itself. We can only manage our activities with respect to time.
The same skills are needed as those used in managing others—the abilities to plan, organize, delegate, direct, and control. Time management is simply self-management. It is impossible to be effective in any position without controlling one’s time effectively.
Successful time management does not mean working harder, but working smarter. All kinds of management skills must be used in the home and office to get most value from time. You must think ahead about what to do, and timely than others, making it get maximum results in the shortest possible period.

Not long ago, no one understood that infectious diseases were caused by tiny organisms that moved from person to person. Even now, although we know that tiny living microbes cause disease, how they do so is not always obvious. 1. They can also be transmitted through our skin through insect or animal bites. The best way to prevent infections is to block pathogens (病菌)from entering the body.
The first line of defense is to keep germs at bay by following good personal health habits. Wash your hands well. You probably wash your hands after using the bathroom, before preparing or eating food, and after gardening or other dirty tasks. 2. Wet your hands thoroughly. Lather(泡沫)up with soap or cleanser, and rub it into the palms and backs of your hands and your wrists. Be sure to clean your fingertips, under your nails and between your fingers. Wash under running water. 3.

The largest outbreak of the deadly disease Ebola(埃博拉) was caused by an infected bat biting a toddler, say a group of international researchers.
The 17-strong team of European and African tropical disease researchers, ecologists and anthropologists have spent three weeks investigating the outbreak of the disease in Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. The researchers captured the bats and other creatures near the village of Meliandoua in remote eastern Guinea, where the disease began in December 2013. The boy was bitten and passed the infection on to his mother and both died within a week. The disease was then spread far and wide by the people who came to the funeral.
Most of the previous outbreaks have been caused by meat from dead infected animals collected by hunters who then sell it on. Fruit bats, however, are widely eaten in rural West Africa.
The team, led by epidemiologist(流行病学家) Herr Leendertz, a disease ecologist at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, are expected to publish their results in a major journal soon.
Herr Leendertz’s team believe that an infected straw-colored fruit bat brought the disease to Guinea. The mammals are known to travel long distances and usually settle in forests near cities. Herr Leendertz said, “ The evidence is not 100 percent and we can only say that it is possible. They can travel far in one night. I don't think an individual bat or colony(群体) migrated all the way from Congo or Gabon to West Africa. These big colonies are connected. There is a possibility for the virus to mix between colonies. The bats share the same fruit. It is likely not to have even been one species of bat. The virus may jump from one species to another."
If the bat theory is confirmed, the locals would try to destroy the colonies, which, Herr Leendertz says, would be an ecological disaster, because bats pollinate(传授花粉) plants and kill insects. And bat hunts would also only increase human contact with potentially infected animals.
1.What’s the purpose of the 17-strong team?
A. To look into the outbreak of Ebola.
B. To help the people who suffer from Ebola.
C. To help cure the infected boy of Ebola.
D. To make a study of the bats including fruit bats.
2.In Herr Leendertz’s opinion, ______.
A. people can do nothing to prevent the disease
B. the disease Ebola may jump from one species to another
C. the result of the research should be published immediately
D. the straw-colored fruit bats usually settle in forests in the rural areas
3.If the bat theory is confirmed, ______.
A. the disease Ebola will be controlled
B. all the fruit bats in Africa would be killed
C. plants would not be pollinated in the future
D. the ecosystem in Africa might lose its balance
4.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. A toddler was bitten by a bat and died.
B. The disease Ebola is incurable at present.
C. An infected bat caused the outbreak of Ebola.
D. The deadly disease Ebola broke out in Guinea.
5.This passage can probably be classified as ______.

Thousands of persons in Peru are suffering from the disease cholera. Medical experts say it is the first time in their century that cholera has reached the western part of the world. The United States Centers for disease control says the kind of cholera has been spreading throughout the world since 1961. It was discovered that year in Indonesia. Since the first case in Peru, more than sixteen thousand people have been affected and about one hundred have died.
Cholera is caused by polluted food and water. People become infected (传染) when they eat the polluted food or drink the polluted water. If untreated immediately, they may die within hours. Most victims however, can be saved. Treatment includes drugs and replacement of body fluids (液体) directly into the blood.
Medical researchers have developed a vaccine (菌苗) medicines to protect against cholera. But the vaccine is only about 50% effective. And it protects against cholera for only about six months. Medical experts say the best way to fight cholera is to prevent it. They also say people should not eat uncooked food or food that has not been cooked long enough.
