The Moth Poetry Prize is an annual contest from Irish magazine. It is one of the biggest prizes in the world for a single unpublished poem of any length with the theme of peace. The prize is open to anyone over 16 as long as the poem is previously unpublished,and each year it attracts thousands of entries from new and established poets from over 50 countries worldwide.
The shortlist will be announced in June 2019 and the four shortlisted poems will feature in the summer issue of The Moth. The winners will be invited to a special prize-giving event at Poetry Ireland in Dublin in the summer of 2019.

The poet and novelist Jacob Polley will judge this year’s Moth Poetry Prize. Jacob is the author of four poetry collections published by Picador,the latest of which,Jackself,won the T. S. Eliot Prize. He is also the recipient of a Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize,and his novel Talk of the Tovun won a Somerset Maugham Award. He teaches at the University of Newcastle.

Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha, Maud Martha received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.

The Peppered Moth, a kind of insect, is found in England. It is light brown in color and likes to settle on trees which are also light brown. This makes the moth difficult to be seen and birds are less likely to notice and eat it.

Although the Poetry Out Loud (POL) National Finals were cancelled due to COVID-19, it is announced that they’re working with their POL partner, the Poetry Foundation, to explore ways to honor the 2020 state POL champions.
Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self- confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, POL has grown to reach more than 3. 8 million students and 60,000 teachers from 16,000 schools.
POL uses a pyramid structure that starts at the classroom level. Winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to a state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals. Awards and placements are determined only by the judges’ scores based on the POL Evaluation Criteria.
Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult to Washington, DC to compete for the national championship. The state winner’s school receives $500 for the purchase of poetry materials. At the national finals, a total of $50,000 is awarded annually.
The free materials POL provides include an online poetry anthology (诗集), a teacher’s guide, videos of student performances, lesson plans and promotional and media resources. Hard copies of materials are available for teachers participating in the official program but anyone can access the online materials at poetryoutloud.org.
Poetry creates a space for empathy (共鸣) that no other art does, so POL as a program creates a really inclusive space where the students read poets of different cultural backgrounds. Khadijah Ceesay, the 2019 POL champion, said at the award ceremony, “Going out to compete and meet different people after the same goal, to share poetry, has been eye opening because It’s given me a chance to see different interpretations and meanings behind words. It’s also taught me the power and weight that words hold.”

One of the important subjects in contemporary poetry is identity—with an open-ended explanation of that word. Poets, young and old, are exploring what identity is, using their own lives as the background.
British poet Phoebe Power, in her first collection of poems, Shrines of Upper Austria, explores a different aspect of identity: a personal understanding of national identity. The collection received the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and was on the final list for the T.S. Eliot Prize.
Power was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne and raised in Cumbria. She has taken part in a number of performance art and video art projects. She received a Northern Writers’ Award in 2014 and an Eric Gregory Award from the Society of Authors in 2012. Now she lives in York in northern England.
Power’s starting point is her grandmother. She came to England from Austria as a new bride married to a British soldier in 1946, the first year after the end of World WarⅡ. In Shrines of Upper Austria, we walk with the poet to see her grandmother’s life before Britain. Power also added some prose(散文) to the book, which tells us some stories of her grandmother’s early life. For example, it tells the stories about how her grandmother was found as a baby and given to a farmer when she was two.

Why do we read poetry? First obvious one: because we enjoy it. The only other reason is for academic purposes, and that's not why this is here.
Many of us read poetry simply because we often feel depressed and hopelessly lost, and in poetry we see how beautiful and strange everything is. So in that way poetry calms our anxiety.
There are many different kinds of poems. They are not all calming. Some poems make me anxious, angry, scared, and sad, which is why I value them. As a reader, I want a full meal, not just dessert. I want the sweet and the bitter. Often, I read poetry when I'm already relaxed. In fact, I read more when I'm not stressed out.
Here are the main reasons I respond to poetry, as far as I can tell. Metrical(格律的) poems are about setting up rules and then bending them. Usually, this is done by setting up a rhythm and then violating it or almost violating it. And then returning to it again. This satisfies my desire for order and also my desire for testing boundaries.
Poetry plays with language and often slams words together in surprising ways, which is thrilling the way food can be when the chef has paired ingredients you never thought would taste good together but somehow do.
Many poems are dense. Words mean two or three things at once and lots of suggestions are packed between the lines. This is intellectually inspiring and it allows me to read the same poem over and over always finding new things in it.
And, of course, there's the subject matter. It interests me just as it would if the same subject was explored in a story or essay. Not all poems interest me in this way, but then not all stories and essays do, either.

He was once referred to as the Picasso of poetry. Beloved by Chileans of all classes, he is one of the most widely read and respected poets in history. And this year is the 100th birthday of Pablo Neruda(1904—1973).
