“I will need to open your neck to remove the tumor,” the surgeon told me on a hot summer day. The words turned into white noise.“So ,an ugly scar across my neck, then?” I asked. The nurse said: “Don’t worry. The closure is like his signature. Just like you want a perfect scar, he wants to give you one. You’ll barely see it.” I found some comfort in that.
I googled “cancer surgery scar”and was presented with neck images: necks with red and purple lines. closed with stitches or glue; necks with multiple scars....It was enough to make me shut my Macbook, as anxiety pulsed through my body. In the mirror, I admired my neck, running my finger across a gold chain I wore. Then a tiny voice said:“Mummy!”
My then fie-year-old son,. Jack, appeared in the mirror behind me. Our reflection was a big reality check. See, my son didn’t know I had cancer and was having surgery. I'm a single mom. Jack lives with me and doesn’t have a relationship with his father. I’m his hero. I'm the homework helper, nurse, chef, taxi driver, and every other variation of parent. I knew I couldn’t lose heart over cancer or some scar on my neck --I’m this kid's life!
So I did the next best thing I could think of: I made an appointment to get my hair done a few days before the first surgery. My goal was simple: golden hair to frame my scar. If I couldn’t hide it, I might as well show it off. I never had any intentions of hiding the scar. I didn’t want my son to think my scar was something to be ashamed of. I'm his role model and I needed to set a good example. Bad things can happen, but it's how you deal with them that matters.
The scar proves I faced my fear and won. If I got through that I can get through all the hardships, land on my feet and live boldly.

It was back in 2014. I learned I needed an operation to remove the tumor (肿瘤). Hearing the word “cancer” was the first shock, but knowing the surgeon would have to cut the front of my neck open was a lot to swallow. I was relieved to learn that thyroid (甲状腺) cancer can be treated if caught early, but 1 wasn’t thrilled it would mean a lifelong scar front and center on my neck.
Back at home, I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I admired my neck, running my finger across a delicate gold chain I wore. Then came a tiny voice, “Mommy!” My then five year -old son. Jack, appeared in the mirror behind me. Our reflection was a big reality check. See, my son didn’t know I had been diagnosed (诊断) with the Big C, or that I was having an operation. One spring day. once the flowers have begun to open, a bee will hover (盘旋)and zip through your yard and dive-bomb your picnic table. While you're thinking about avoiding an attack, that bee is focused on something else entirely: me.
A honeybee has about six weeks to live. Today, like most days, her task is to fly as many as three miles from home, stick her long, straw-like tongue into a hundred or so flowers. When the bee has had her fill, she'll fly home. There the bee will deposit what she has got into the mouth of one of her co-workers, who will relay it to another, and so on for about 20 minutes, until the mixture is ready to be placed into the comb. Then she and her 50.000 or so mates will hover in the dark all night every night, flapping their wings to create hot, breezy conditions to remove the water from the mixture. Several sunrises later, they will seal me off in a golden cell of beeswax. In her lifetime, our bee may visit 4.000 flowers, and yet will produce only one-twelfth of a tea spoon of me.
The average American consumes nearly a pound and a half of me every year, in tea, on toast, and beyond. If I do say so myself, I am a timeless treasure. Literally—I never go bad.
Unfortunately, my good health is not guaranteed. The problem lies in the growth of industrial agriculture and the use of pest control chemicals, as well as changes in weather patterns, all of which reduce the number of flowers bees have to visit. I'd appreciate your letting your own garden grow just a little wild. My future depends on all of us fostering spring and summers wild flowers, thus helping the bees, who give so much—to you, to me—without ever asking for anything in return.
1.What does "me" refer to in the passage?
A.The flower. B.The bee.
C.Water. D.Honey.
2.What is the 2nd paragraph mainly about?
A.Bees' special talent. B.Bees’ hard work.
C.Bees' living environment. D.Bees' social behavior.
3.Which one of the following is true according to the passage?
A.A bee will always prioritize attacking picnic lovers.
B.Before "me" is sealed off in beeswax, the drying process can take a few nights.
C.The lifework of a bee satisfies the average demand of an American consumer annually.
D.Bees are more likely to visit those deliberately pest-controlled gardens.
4.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To appeal for help for honeybees.
B.To talk about the history of a treasure.
C.To put forward techniques for gardeners.
D.To argue against the control of chemicals.

The UK's first fully solar-powered home, which removes the need to ever receive a gas or electricity bill again, has gone on sale, but it will cost you £1.2 million.
The timber-framed home in Great Glen, Leicestershire, contains a number of “zero-carbon feature” including solar electric energy, triple glazing and rainwater storage. It is entirely heated by underground water-filled tubes that are warmed by solar energy from rooftop panels. The house was designed and built by Caplin Homes and covers two acres of land. The design and construction, down to the materials, were used specifically for their low carbon footprint.
The solar panels on the roof of the five-bedroom house are called hybrids because they collect both electrical and thermal energy. Solar walls preheat incoming air, and an Earth Energy Bank (EEB) and heat pump can store heat, and get it back for use when temperatures drop. The south-facing triple-glazed windows are said to also improve the house's energy management during the winter.
All the technologies are controlled by a control system, which monitors the inside and outside temperatures, how much energy is being received by the solar panels, and the heat levels in the EE domestic hot water tank. Due to its low energy design, the Solar House is expected to only require heat from the EEB for about 10 weeks of the year.
For £1.2 million, buyers also get two garages. Estate agent (房地产经纪人) Anthony Fox said the possibility of no utility bills was a big draw for potential owners: the idea is that your bills pretty much disappear and the house is self-sustaining and self-sufficient. That was a big aspect for most of the people who came to have a look around. “We had a lot of interest on the open day. There were some strong considerations to buy there and then. Everyone was very keen to learn how the house worked.” He added.
1.Which is true about the UK’s first fully solar-powered home?
A.It is directly heated by rooftop panels.
B.It has a set of heat-storage device available.
C.All of its materials are not environmentally friendly.
D.Its walls can keep cold air from coming in to store heat.
2.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.The monitor of the temperature.
B.The amount of the received energy.
C.The function of the control system.
D.The significance of the new technologies.
3.What’s a big attraction for potential buyers according to Anthony Fox?
A.No gas or electricity bill. B.Two additional garages.
C.Unique structure of the house. D.Only £1.2 million for the house.
4.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To advertise a zero-carbon house.
B.To recommend an amazing house.
C.To introduce a solar-powered house.
D.To explain how the low-energy house works.
