Ever wondered how one person could save the planet from the effects of climate change?
A British-made computer game on trial release on Monday creates different ways of doing just that.
“Fate of the World”puts the Earth’s future in players’ hands, placing them in charge of an international environmental body which could save the world from the effects of rising greenhouse gas emissions(排放)or let it destroyed by more emissions.
Through different scenes, players can explore options such as geoengineering(地球工程) and alternative energy sources to save the planet from rising temperatures, decreasing natural resources and a growing population over the next 200 years.
An improved version of the game will be followed by a three-month feedback period from players, with final release due in February next year.
Created by Oxford-based games developer Red Redemption, the game is different from other mainstream action games mainly by using data from real climate models and advice from scientists and economists.
“Science data is often inaccessible and we are trying to put players in a position of power and connected with the issues,” Gobion Rowlands, Red Redemption’s founder and chairman said.
This year, a series of apparent errors in climate science and the failure of UN talks to reach an international deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions appeared to weaken the public’s interest in climate change.
However, games centered on sustainability(持续性)and human rights have been growing in popularity and are welcomed by green groups as a way of raising awareness.
Using climate change as inspiration for entertainment shows the issue has affected global culture, which can only be a good thing.Friends of the Earth's head of climate Mike Childs said.“We need creative industries to work with these big issues as the results can be extremely powerful and can help us to understand what a sustainable future looks and feels like,”he added.
1.“Fate of the World” in the passage refers to________.
A.a book on computer games B.a company developing computer games
C.a computer game on climate change D.a player in charge of computer games
2.What makes the climate computer game different from the other games?
A.It uses data from real climate models and advice from experts.
B.It is the only computer game about climate.
C.It can save the planet from the effect of climate change.
D.It aims to affect the global culture.
3.It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A.games on sustainability and human rights are very popular among young players
B.the game increases players’ awareness of environmental protection
C.only computer experts can play the new climate computer game
D.after a three-month feedback period from players, the new game is on sale now
4.Which of the following can NOT the players experience while playing the new game?
A.Challenging the climate change in an unreal world
B.Understanding what a sustainable future looks and feels like
C.Enjoying the power to decide the earth’s fate
D.Predicting what will happen in 200 years
5.In which column of a newspaper can you probably read this article?
A.Weather & Climate B.Science & Technology
C.Life & Entertainment D.Sports & Culture

How to express yourself to others
Every person on the planet communicates in some fashion. And one of the hardest things to do when you're communicating with someone is expressing yourself. After all, words have the power to give life and death... especially in relationships. 1.
If you have a fear of people, people will avoid you. It's a vicious cycle(恶性循环). You avoid people because you fear that they will hurt you. People see your coldness, and either think the worst (that you are stuck-up(傲慢的)),or satisfy your desire and leave you alone. 2. You'll have a hard time getting close to them when you bottle everything up inside. Your relationships will all be shallow.
Your inability to express yourself will haunt(萦绕于)you in time of trouble. You'll need help, and you'll want help, but you won't seek it. You'll hide. So, no one helps you. Then you grow bitter and angry. What's more, it can cause isolation. You build walls around your emotions and people consequently leave you alone. Gradually, your life will be empty. Life is relationships. 3.
However, reading will help you learn how other people express themselves. Pay attention to word usage, diction(措词),flow, voice and tones. These will give you ideas of expressing yourself. 4. They'll provide you with many ways of expressing your emotions and help you express yourself better.
Besides, you can do some writing on your own. Start a novel. Write letters. Keep a journal or diary. You'll find that writing helps you to sort through your thoughts. Writing gives you focus and direction.
5. You can't catch it from someone who has it. It is the spiritual state of mind that is the direct result of fear. There is really only one type of fear and that is the fear of the unknown. Don't fear what other people think about you. Honestly, your imagination will create far worse imagination than what most people will ever think.
A.Social anxiety is not a disease.
B.That will make them feel needed.
C.So it is important that you learn to express yourself.
D.All of these factors have some relationship to happiness.
E.Look up words that you've never seen before and use them.
F.The stronger your relationships are, the more joy you'll have in life.
G.When you can't open up to people, they will feel that you are unapproachable.

In 2012, Malala survived from being shot by terrorists for speaking out for a girl’s right to be educated in her native country. She is being recognized today for her global activism on education for girls. Winning this award is a huge honor, especially for such a young person.
Malala’s journey to the Nobel Prize has not been easy. She grew up in a dangerous district of Pakistan called the Swat Valley. This area was taken over by the Taliban. Are you aware that every single person on this planet who has ever lived, lives now or will live, has a different perception of reality? The way each of us perceives the world is to some degree different than any other person's perception of reality. __①__ What is absolutely real and right for you may be an illusion, or nonexistent, or completely false for another!
It's important to know this. __②__ For example, the news media loves to create drama, and one of their favorite methods is to elicit(引起) fear: fear of other people, fear of the weather, fear of the economy, etc. The news media tells us how to perceive the world—and if a person takes the newscasters at their word, they perceive the world to be very dangerous and hostile. To that person, the mental images and emotions suggested by other people create a version of reality that is completely different from the reality perceived by someone who does not watch the news.
Things are not always what they seem. For most people, seeing is believing, which is why magicians, artists and marketers are so successful. Just like the TV news, they show you only what they want you to see and it is perceived as reality. But how would that reality change if you saw what went on behind the scenes or what was left out?
What's your story?
We all have a story. Over time, your story takes on a life of its own and you become your story. But who's the author and why did him put so much crap in there? All that unnecessary suffering, struggle, heartache, worry and pain... wouldn't it be better to live a story without all that? Who wants to live in a story with that much boredom and unfulfilled longings?
The story got its start when you were born, and was coauthored by you along with the influences in your life. __③__ Anytime you were influenced by someone or something, you unconsciously handed your pen over and said “Here, you write this about me.” So you are not even writing your OWN story! No one does—until they recognize that fact, and make a conscious decision to take control of the pen. You CAN write your story the way you want it to play out.
________________
It is helpful to understand how the brain takes reality and filters it to create your unique perception of reality. It's an automatic unconscious action that is based on:
● Physical experiences (which is why some optical illusions are extremely unsettling)
● Past conditioning (how you are programmed to see the world)
__④__ When you become aware of the fact that you are constructing your own reality, you can take charge and build one that is more pleasing. If you change your mind, your vibration and your intentions, you can change your circumstances! Instead of, “I am a victim of circumstance,” imprint in your mind, “I am the cocreator of my life”; Instead of, “I am sick and tired of...” imprint in your mind,“I am in control and enthusiastic about what I do”.
Raise your vibration by thinking, talking and acting more positively. As positiveness becomes a mental habit, that change will become your new inner reality, which will soon manifest in your outer reality.
The power of perception is immense. Choose to see more good than bad, more abundance than lack, more love than indifference and more success than struggle.
1.How does the author present his viewpoints in the first three paragraphs?
A.By answering questions. B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons. D.By drawing conclusions.
2.The sentence “Because if you are not aware, your perception, world view and reality are created by other people.” should be put in ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
3.Which of the following subtitles can be filled in the blank?
A.Seeing is not believing
B.Live up to your expectations
C.Change your perception and create a new reality
D.Physical experiences and past conditioning really count
4.What is the tone of the passage?
A.Instructive. B.Humorous.
C.Critical. D.Ironic.

Ever wonder how this season’s celebrations affect the environment? Guest blogger Krista Fairles takes an amusing look at this very topic:
The holidays are a wonderful, cheerful time when most people wait for Santa to bring them presents. But I’m not like most people. I spend my time wondering just what the environmental impacts of Santa Claus and his reindeer are, and more importantly, how I can calculate those impacts.
Lately I’ve been particularly curious as to whether Santa’s old sled is a clean green flying machine, or if he should be replacing his 8 reindeer with an environmentally-friendly car.
I should mention that, surprisingly, I was unable to find statistics specific to Santa’s magical flying reindeer, so these calculations use numbers from various sources and may not represent actual pollution caused by Santa and his animals. In other words, don’t complain to the government about the damage Santa is causing the environment based on this article.
Santa’s yearly trip around the globe is 44,000km long, twice the average of a North American driver. If we assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip, then reindeer power only needs to push Santa’s sled forward. To complete the trip in 12 hours, I estimate they must travel at a speed of about 3100km/h. To travel at this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible 980 million calories each!!
So the next question is: how much food is in 980 million calories? Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to eat 16,500 lbs each — or 1.6 acres of food. Growing 12.8 acres of corn has its own implications for the environment that we’ll leave for another calculation.
We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are “letting out” some of that corn in the form of methane (甲烷,沼气). A resting cow produces 110 kg of methane per year, so flying reindeer would each let out about 4.8 tons. With methane causing 20 times the global warming damage of CO2, and the altitude increasing that damage by 1000% that another 20 times, we can put Santa’s round-trip emissions at 15,488 tons. This is much more than the 100 tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!
Bad Santa.
1. Which aspect does the writer NOT include in her analyses about reindeer’s influence on environment?
A. Distance covered. B. Calories consumed.
C. Tons of waste let out. D. Money spent on food.
2. According to Paragraph 6, how many acres of corn would Santa need to feed 10 reindeer?
A. 1.6. B. 16. C. 12.8. D. 128.
3. Which of the following statements would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Christmas celebrations are really a waste of money.
B. Vegetarians are more likely to survive than meat-eaters.
C. Raising animals has a negative influence on environment.
D. The car industry does less harm to environment than farming.
4. Which of the following words best describes the language style of the passage?
A. Humourous and concerned. B. Cheerful and friendly.
C. Academic and formal. D. Serious and boring.
5. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Is Santa driving clean and green?
B. Santa, watch where you’re going!
C. Santa Claus is coming to town!
D. Let’s reduce waste on Christmas celebrations!

Have you ever wondered where the chocolate in your favorite candy bar comes from? Choco-
late comes from the cacao tree, which grows in warm, tropical areas of West Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, and South America. And who eats the delicious chocolate made from the cacao grown in these places? The majority of chocolate is consumed in Europe and North America. This probably sounds like a familiar story-developing countries produce inexpensive raw materials that are manufactured and sold as finished goods in developed countries, and generally, that is what happens with chocolate. Large chocolate companies buy cacao beans at a low price and produce cocoa and chocolate products to sell at a relatively high price.
But the familiar story has a new chapter. Beginning in the 1980s, some consumers learned that cacao farmers were living difficult and uncertain lives. The farmers received money for their crops based on world markets, and the market price for cacao was sometimes so low that farmers received less for their crops than the crops had cost to produce. In response, groups of consumers in Europe and the United States developed "fair trade" organizations to guarantee that farmers of cacao, as well as coffee and tea, would receive fair and consistent prices for their crops.
Fair trade organizations benefit farmers by buying cacao beans or other products from them directly at higher-than-market prices and eliminating(消除)“middle men" such as exporters. Fair trade organizations also encourage farming techniques that are not harmful to the environment or to farm workers. for example, growing cacao without chemical pesticides or fertilizers in the shade of rain forest trees.0ne organization, Equal Exchange, helps farmers set up farming cooperatives in which they can share resources and work on projects such as community schools. Another, Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International(FLO),guarantees that products bearing its label meet standards that improve the lives of growers and producers.
The results of fair trade are a better standard of living for some farmers and nicer chocolate bars made with organically produced cocoa that consumers don't feel guilty about buying. And al- though fair trade chocolate is somewhat more expensive than other chocolate and now makes up only 1% of chocolate sold, the fair trade idea is spreading quickly. You may soon see fair trade chocolate right next to the more famous bars in your favorite store.
1.The underlined word“that”in Paragraph l refers to .
A. the unfair trade between countries
B. the high price of chocolate products
C. the traditional production of raw materials
D. the major consumption of the finished food
2.The organization Equal Exchange aims to .
A. promote chocolate sales
B. offer support to the farmers
C. reduce the cost of growing crops
D. increase the production of chocolate
3.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. There will be more fair trade chocolate ill the future.
B. Fair trade chocolate is not as tasty as other chocolate.
C. Consumers feel guilty about buying fair trade chocolate.
D. There is probably no reason to worry about cacao farmers.
4.The passage mainly talks about .
A. giving tips on how to undertake fair chocolate trade
B. advising people to join in Fair trade organizations
C. encouraging farmers to adopt organic farming
D. informing people of fair trade chocolate
