What do you do make your community a better place? How has volunteering changed you and he way you view he world?Write an essay describing your experiences and be recognized for all that you do.You can also give a description of the special person you meet during your volunteering and you’ll always remember and give him/her the chance to be recognized in a national magazine,Teen Ink!

Prizes

Each year at least two teens are honored for outstanding service to their community by Teen Ink.Contest winners receive $100 for their favorite charity and a copy of the magazine featuring their winning essay.Plus,they’ll have the opportunity to choose from an exciting selection of Teen Ink merchandise（商品）—clothing and other items—available only from Teen Ink.

Do you want to make a difference in your community? The Verizon App Challenge can get you started. The first step is to think of a problem in your community. The next step is to create an app that can solve the problem.

Group of five to seven students in middle school or high school, led by a teacher, can enter the contest. First, teams will compete on a local level. Teams that make it to the next round receive $ 5,000 for their schools. Finalists present their app ideas to judges in a live web conference. Next, the judges pick national winners. The top eight teams receive an additional $ 15,000 for their schools, and each team member receives a Samsung tablet. Plus, the winning teams get the chance to bring their app to life.

A group of six girls from Los Frenos, Texas won the second annual Verizon App Challenge. They came up with the Hello Navi app concept, short for “hello navigation”. The app was designed to help visually impaired (受损的) students navigate (导航) their school. Do you have an app idea that could help solve a local issue? The deadline to register (登记) is November 24. Here are some tips from the Verizon Foundation to get you started:

Get your team together for a brainstorming meeting. Write out all the ideas that conic to mind. Don’t ignore challenges. Accept the idea that you can solve a problem that exists in your community. Ask family, friends and people in your community to share their thoughts about problems that they want to see solved.

As I was leaving the shelter, a man asked if I was the one who had brought all the food．I shyly nodded, and he said, “A round here, you are a hero．” From that point on, I made myself a promise that I would serve the community more often, even when it was not required．Through this school assignment, I have realized that caring for others is an important part of living and the world would be a completely different place if people all help those who are less fortunate．

Computers are usually at their best when used as a tool to accomplish tasks and not as a portal (传送门) into an online existence that controls our life. Online communities have become very real and they help millions feel more connected, but they must not take the place of our physical life community.

It is also common for people to find jobs online and to migrate to different locations around the world. This uproots﹙使人迁移他处居住﹚ us and takes us away from the local society we grew up in, forces us to make new friends and establish ourselves in a new community.

Becoming active in our community does require effort, but it’s well worth it. Understanding the importance of community and becoming more active within yours will greatly increase your quality of life.
