What do you do if you don’t get into your first choice of university? That’s the dilemma that faces thousands of British students every year.
Many candidates turn to Clearing, the service that helps find university places for students at the last moment. If they don’t have the marks to get into their first choice of institution, Clearing tells them about places available at other universities, though they might have to read another subject.
But this year has seen a record number of people applying to university. This, combined with the weak economy, an uncertain job market and budget cuts at universities, means that there's been even more of a scramble for places than usual. Some sources say six students have applied for each remaining undergraduate university place.
The British university admissions service, UCAS, says up to a quarter of this year’s university applicants --- almost 190,000 people --- still don’t have a place on a degree course. That’s a rise of over 46,000 students from last year.
Faced with these figures, some British students might be thinking of an interesting alternative: studying abroad. The University of Nottingham, for example,is offering places at its campuses in Ningbo, near Shanghai, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Students here can gain University of Nottingham degrees in business, accounting, engineering and English. Similarly, the University of Bolton says it has ‘unlimited’ places at its campus in the United Arab Emirates.
Given the problems getting into university, the UK’s Higher Education Minister, David Willetts, encourages students who haven't made the grade to consider alternatives to university, such as apprenticeships and studying at home.
"There are a range of options available," he says. "People are able to reapply. They should think how they can spend their year adding that bit to their CV, which would help their application --- getting practical work experience or extra skills --- anything that strengthens their chances next year."
But some experts say that rising university costs, poor long-term job prospects, and a drop in graduate recruitment mean it’s the worst time to be a university student in the UK.
1.When the author says this year “there’s been more of a scramble for places” (Para. 3), he means_________________.
A.more people have applied to university
B.there is more competition between the candidates
C.there are more services that help find university places
D.more places are available
2.According to UCAS, there are about ____university applicants this year.
A.190,000 B.46, 000 C.236, 000 D.760, 000
3.David Willetts encourages students faced with the lack of places on a degree course _____.
A.to consider apprenticeships and studying at home
B.to study at campus outside the UK
C.to reapply next year
D.not to go to university in the UK
4.Which of the following is NOT the reason that may make this year the worst time to enter university?
A.It costs more to study at university.
B.Long-term job prospects are worse.
C.Universities offer places in other countries.
D.There are fewer chances to do graduate study.
5.According to the passage, what can students do if they don’t get into their first choice of university?
A.They can go to work in Clearing.
B.They can get practical work experience or skills and reapply next year.
C.They can spend the year writing a better CV.
D.They do graduate study at home.

You put a great deal of effort into reaching the college of your choice. It’s time to get started. But what’s next? Beginning college can be an exciting but awkward time. Follow these tips to adjust to your new life rapidly and make the most of your college experience.
● To save time and money, use the college’s bus system. Taking the bus to school is quick, easy and free in most college towns. You won’t have to locate or afford a place to park either. It’s also a good way to be environmentally aware.
● Save pennies on books by waiting until class starts. You might not even need all of the recommended books. New textbooks cost an arm and a leg. Try buying used textbooks — it’s a surefire way to save money and serves the purpose as well.
● Do never look at college life as an endless series of parties and social activities. But there is a whole lot more to college if you’re serious about graduating. Having a good college experience is all about balancing work and fun.
● Be aware that your living environment can largely affect your academic success. If the dorm doesn’t suit you, consider living at home with your family or renting your own apartment. The best location for your studies isn’t always your dorm. Find a quiet area, like the library, to do your work. Alternatively, buy some headphones that block out noise.
● Be mindful of your diet. Make healthy food choices and watch what you eat. Avoid foods that are processed or high in sugar. The “freshman 15” is real. Many college students gain at least 15 pounds during their freshmen year.
● While electives (选修课) can be helpful when figuring out your major, you shouldn’t entirely rely on them. Clubs and other organizations exist around. Get involved. Make sure, though, that you still have time to study. Having too much on your plate can hurt your grades.
1.Which of the following ideas can be financially wise?
A. Driving your own car. B. Buying used books.
C. Renting an apartment. D. Attending activities.
2.In the text, freshmen are repeatedly warned against ______.
A. academic failures B. physical problems
C. traffic accidents D. social activities
3.The “freshman 15” tells the fact that some freshmen ______.
A. attend limited activities on campus
B. have little regular physical exercise
C. focus less on their academic work
D. take relaxed attitudes to their diets
4. The underlined phrase “having too much on your plate” probably refers to ______.
A. using too much money for meals
B. eating too many unhealthy foods
C. taking part in too many after-class activities
D. taking an elective that has too many students

Steps for a Successful College Application
When it comes to getting into the college of your choice, your college application is the most important tool you have in your hands. 1., while a bad one can land you at the bottom. Keep the following tips in mind when you are going through the college application process and you’ll be on the road to admission.
Be Prepared
2., carefully look over all the questions and requirements. Dedicate a page to each college with a checklist of everything you’ll need to submit, such as transcripts, recommendations, the essay, copies of awards/certificates, etc.
3.
Former Records Technician, Carmen Huff, says the best thing students do is to get their applications early—or at least by the deadline. Colleges and universities receive so many applications that they don’t have the time to accept late ones. The more time you give the college or university to process your application, the more time you’ll have to deal with any problems that might arise, Huff says.
Watch Your GPA and Test Scores
This is the first thing that most universities look at. For example, most four- year colleges don’t have a GPA requirement, but top Ivy Leagues(常春藤联盟) usually only accept students with a 3.5 or higher GPA. However, if your GPA is weak, don’t give up applying. 4.
Write an Amazing Essay
A great essay can help tip the balance in your favor. 5.. Many colleges require two essays, one short and one long. What you write not only shows how literate you are, but also provides the reader with an impression of your values and beliefs.
A. Be On Time
B. Be Patient and Determined
C. When you have a test or an exam
D. When you first receive the application
E. A great application can zip you to the front of the line
F. So, take the time to think your essay through carefully
G. Instead, be sure to emphasize your other good qualities such as any awards or community involvement

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CAR RENTAL IN CANADA
When you fly into Canada you don’t have many choices. A car is often the only way to reach the spectacular destinations which Canada is famous for. Most major car rental companies have offices at airports, towns and cities across the country.
What do you need in order to rent a car in Canada?
● Valid Driver’s license and International Driver’s Permit if your license is not in English or French.
● When picking up your car, you may have to show your passport and a return airline ticket.
● Credit Card for the deposit—Renting a car in Canada without a credit card is impossible.
Fly-Drive Packages from Home
You may get the best deal on car rental if you book a fly-drive package from home or if you book a long time in advance. Rental coast varies to a great extent, depending on the time of year, type of vehicle and length of rental.
Minimum Age
The driver has to be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of 12 months of driving experience in order to rent a car in Canada. A “Young Renter Fee” will be applied to your car rental, if you are between the ages of 21 and 24 and will be charged on top of the rental rate.
Insurance
Most car rental companies in Canada offer a collision damage waiver (CDW) for an additional charge. Some credit card companies include CDW insurance on car rentals when you use their cards to pay for the rental. Check your credit card’s terms and conditions.
Fuel and Service Stations
Most rental cars use unleaded gas. Remember, driving distances in Canada are long and a large amount of your vacation budget will go towards gasoline. Filling up in larger cities is usually cheaper than in small towns. If you are heading up to the Northwest Territories, gas prices will be much higher than in the south.
Cross-Border Travel
Some rental companies don’t allow their cars to drive across borders, like from Canada to the US or across provinces. If this is the case, watch out; GPS may be used to track your route.
1.You’ll have to pay extra fees for your car rental in Canada if you________.
A. book a fly-drive package from home
B. are 22 with one-year driving experience
C. use a credit card offering CDW insurance
D. have no passport or return airline ticket
2.What are you encouraged to do when you rent a car in Canada?

You are out of work. You hate your job.1.You are looking for your first job. Where do you start?
If you are like most Americans, you’ll probably email your resume to a lot of companies. You might search for job postings on the Internet. But experts say you won’t have much luck.
One thing you can do is read Richard Bolles’s What Color Is Your Parachute? This book is different from other job-hunting manuals. Bolles helps you find your ideal job: a job that fits you, a job that makes you happy. What kind of job is ideal for you? You need to have a clear picture in your mind of the job you want.2.
Bolles says that you must think about three things before you can find your ideal job:
1. Your skills. What do you like to do? What do you do well? Are you good at talking to groups? Growing vegetables? Teaching? Drawing on the computer?3. For example, a mother of four children is probably good at managing people (children!). This woman may be a good manager.
2. 4. Where do you like to work? Do you like to work outside? At home? In an office? Alone or with others? What kinds of people do you like to work with?
3. Job rewards. How much money do you need? How much money do you want? Do you need a lot of vacation time?5. What makes you feel good about a job?
So, if you are looking for a job or if you have a job but want a new one, remember: Don’t just email your resume out to every company. Don’t just answer Internet job postings. And don’t wait for friends to give you a job.
A.Job setting.
B.Job description.
C.What else do you want from a job?
D.You aren’t satisfied with your career.
E.Bolles asks you to think about all your skills.
F.The book was first written in 1970.
G.The book has many exercises to help you draw this picture.

B. You get what you tolerate
C. Don’t feel guilty of your requests
D. Don’t think others are mind readers
E. Don’t make a “no” mean more than it does
F. Be specific about what you want and when you want it
Be Bold: Ask for What You Really Want!
Have you ever been in a situation that is causing you to feel annoyed, frustrated, or unappreciated? We all experience them, but often we don’t have the courage to change them or ask for what we really want. Complaining about your problems never solves them. Only when you get clear about what you want, and are willing to ask for it, will you experience not only a lot less stress in your life, but greater success in your relationship, career and life. Here are five tips to help you on your way.
1.________________
We often think our bosses, colleagues and even our friends can understand our thought even without being told. So when they don’t act as we’d like, we feel hurt and upset. For any relationship to develop, both parties have to communicate their needs. Whether it’s how you’d like your colleague to communicate with you about a work project, or how you’d like your boss to assess your work, it’s necessary to convey what you want.
2.________________
When asking for what you really want, you will seldom, if ever, be given more than what you have the courage to ask for. So don’t weaken your requests to avoid being turned down. Think about what your ideal outcome would be and then confidently, courageously, ask for it. While you may not always get as much as you asked for, you will get more than you would have otherwise.
3.________________
In the workplace, the biggest reason for unmet expectations is a lack of understanding of exactly what is expected. A request that holds water needs to make clear not just what you want, but also the time limit within which you want it. That is, both a clear “what” and “when”. For example, “Could you please get the monthly sales report to me by midday Friday?
4.________________
Whether it’s asking your friend to show up on time, or asking your colleague to stop making jokes in your presence, every day, through what you say and do, you teach others how to treat you. Letting others know what you will (and will not)put up with and what you expect from them, is important to your wellbeing and success—at home and work.
5.________________
In reality you won’t always get what you ask for. Your boss won’t always give you the pay raise you’d like and your parents may not agree to mind your three kids every second weekend. When people say no, you can take it really personally and decide never to speak to them again—or you can accept it graciously and move on. At least now you know where you stand and can plan accordingly.
Asking for less than you really want—from yourself, from others and from life—doesn’t serve anyone. Remember that fortune favors the bold. So make bigger, better, bolder requests, and ask for what you really want. Who knows…you might just get it!
